I will sacrifice my family to them
Week 2: Day 4
Deadlift: 1x5-60, 1x10-70, 3x8-80, 2x6-85, 2x6-90
DB incline bench: 5x5-18kg Dbs
Technique: HS hold
- deadlifts felt amazing- probably had at least 3-4 reps in the tank on all sets, worked glutes and hamstring, incline bench heavier than expected- needed long rests, felt good and strong

My mom started freaking out again about my hormone issues so it’s probably not going to blow over this time. I know I need to gain weight and probably won’t be able to keep my body comp, but I mentally can’t let go. The thing is, I don’t even have a rational reason given that I work out covered and don’t do social media. Any tips/advice?
Pretty sure @whang already gave you advice -see a therapist.
add: in his post asking you about the possibility of anorexia nervosa; so, a doctor/therapist
I’ve seen a couple but they were condescending- the weird fake listening thing
Were they truly condescending? Or were you doing your disconnect between perception and reality thing (which I see in a lot of your posts)?
My parents sat in on a couple of sessions and agreed with my assessment if that counts for anything
I still remember my visceral reaction to the first time I saw you post a physique picture. You must be very convincing with your deflection, because I’m surprised that your parents (being Chinese) have let your issues persist for so long.
Is that a good idea? @EmilyQ
You’ve missed all my posts about being a spoiled brat ![]()
They insisted and I needed to convince them the therapist wasn’t working
Again, deflecting. You are, in essence, dying slowly. Your Mom probably realizes this at some level; since you are still not improving, that is probably why she is “freaking out”.
And you succeeded. Like I’ve been saying, you’re great at deflection.

You’re now pretty much cornered. Time to bite that bullet and work towards fixing the relationship with you have with your own self. Priority number 1.
-
Also somewhat related to number 1, but it would be good to also get to the center of whatever sparked these issues you have. Be it however long ago it was.
-
And I’ll stand by this until the day I die. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE CURRENT THERAPIST YOU HAVE FOR ANY REASON, FIND A NEW ONE. Voice this to your parents. They’re willing to help you right? You still hold the power to decide who you wish to dispel these issues to on a professional level. That’s not to say you’re not willing to cooperate, but if you and the therapist aren’t vibing, you reserve the right to find another, until you’re comfortable with someone who knows how to reach out to you.
-
Do not put the cart before the horse on this one. Please. While you do have the outside help, and the inside help of your immediate family, you also personally have my help. I’m not a professional (yet
), but Ive delt with things of this nature for years. -
Take it one day at a time, and take it seriously. Be as open and honest with yourself FIRST.
@anna_5588
A lot of people might not understand ,but it’ll be okay. Okay?
I have zero knowledge or experience in this field so please listen to people who do first and foremost.
My biggest issue is that I can give you a long list of reasons why gaining weight is a good idea and literally zero reasons not to do it. The problem is i can’t reason you out of a position you didn’t reason yourself into and I don’t have the experience or knowledge to understand why you believe the things you do.
Lots of people have mental hang-ups, they’re just for different subjects/aspects of themselves. So please know that it is quite common. In fact, I daresay most people have this kind of feeling about something in their life but aren’t consciously aware of it/haven’t confronted it.
The fact that you need to gain weight is good news for you though! Now you can focus on getting more muscle mass and getting stronger!
You’re at the perfect situation where you literally have so little fat that your body cannot do basic, natural things. Just take it slow and increase calories by like 200-300 every couple of weeks and see what your tests show you.
You know, utterly basic stuff everyone recommends to those who want to gain some mass.
I don’t know what will work for you, but for me it was a matter of finding a narrative to (begin to) support the change in behaviour and then just relentlessly repeat that to myself until it allows me to override the other behaviours that lie anathema to that.
For me, I try to stress myself out that if I don’t gain weight now, then I’m missing out on all of this training time that I could be having with more weight on the bar which would build even more muscle and strength. As a corollary, I try to calm myself with that I certainly know how to lose fat once it’s gained. I’ve had that experience, and now it’s time to acquire the experience of putting a lot of muscle on my body.
That works for me. I hope you find something that works for you.
And, I do this in small increments. Yesterday, I had an extra 200 calories than I normally would have had that day. That’s progress. I won’t necessarily force myself to repeat it next week, but everytime I do something towards my objective, I give myself a mental attaboy.
