Andy, you mentioned that some speed work off the floor helps the deadlift, could you give an example of this please? Speed deads, cleans, that sort of thing?
Cheers mate, you’re sure to beat 1015 shortly!
yes for me its deadlifts but in early years i would do lots high pulls cleans

What do you do to prevent biceps tears? Thanks a whole lot for answering our questions!
train smart and when you deadlift keep arms relaxed and long, and always stretch after workouts, check out my ebook on deadlifts lots of stuff in there to help you.

What exactly runs through your head when you look at 1000+ lbs on the floor right up until you start to pull?
shit that looks heavy lol being serious you have to want it so bad and i did it in my head 100s times before.
Do aim to keep your knees set a certain angle after you get the bar moving? Do you wait for the bar to be at a certain height before you lock your knees out, or do you just concentrate on thrusting your hips forward and not worry about knee angle?
Thank you!
Thanks a lot!
Hey Andy, how far away is the bar from your shins when you set up? Along those same lines, is it proper to always strive to keep the shoulders either even or behind the bar? I was just curious because I am having troubles figuring out where to put the bar in relation to my shins. Thanks!
How strong were your lifts when you first started out? What did your first year of training look like?

With lots of practice deadlifting you wont have to worry about your knees they will just go to the strongest angle, just conentrate on pushing those hips forward, see video
I’ve been training properly for powerlifting since July and been using 5/3/1 since February. I haven’t been using Wendler’s 90% rule because I didn’t think I needed it. On deadlift weeks 2 & 3 I always miss the reps I should get, I either get less reps or the bar doesn’t leave the floor. Is this a CNS issue? What’s the optimal percentage on deadlift to train with to avoid having a weak DL next week? Like when I DL 85% for 5 reps and can’t get 90% at all next week.
How old were you when you first started training/competing? What did your early training look like? What method (Westside, block periodization, etc) gave you the best gains?

I was 20 when i started powerlifting and competed at 21,my early training was basic plan 8 sets on powerlifts plus assistance work, nothing hard just increase the weights each week slowly as i had never heard of any other way.

ok sounds to me you’re overtrained 85%/90% i would never go near this on deadlifts its a explosive lift you don’t have to hit it so high week after week and don’t go by % go by feel, start light and build up slow over 8/10 weeks, and focus on speed from floor,
check out my speed work

First of all, congratulations on your huge lifts.
Mr. Bolton, I want to have a huge DL. If I don’t squat, am I missing out on something, nothing, or a lot?
i.e., how important is the squat in building the DL? (also, is the squat still important if I leg press and/or do heavy single leg work?)
(my gym doesn’t yet have a squat rack)
Thank you,

Ok for me the squat is very very important is helping the deadlift and so is the leg press i do both you could just do the leg press to start an see how it goes.
why not sign up to my newsletters they will give you lots of info to help you out.

Do you feel as though raw/geared lifting for DL is very different? Also how do you feel on rev. band work? Lastly, what do you feel has been the biggest contributor to improving your lockout?
Also your newsletters are great and I encourage anyone here to sign up if they haven’t already.

If you were to use 15-20 minutes twice a week to improve your grip, how would you do this, and how would this weakness affect your choise of main deadlift movement?
Ok i would do after deadlifts heavy bar hold using deadlift grip and on a another day alternate between overhand shrugs and pinch grip, follow my training log to how i do it.

suited and raw lol i use a deadlift suit because it helps me keep healthy and keeps me tight maybe i could lift 1000lbs plus without it but i choose to use it as i think it helps, and to improve lockout you just need to deadlift from all heights keep things changing, and i have never done band work for deadlifts.

Thank you, I will try that. Heavy bar hold, would that be a rackpull with hold at the top?
