An Uncommon Pursuit

Bench operbers
135x8
135x8
185x5
215x3
225x1
245x1 (opener)
265xmiss
245x1
255x1
265x1 (2nd attempt)

DB floor Press
85’sx5,6,6,6,8 (pussed out, more weight woulda been good)

Triceps Press down (Elbows out)
40x8 (elbows in)
80x8
110x8 (elbows out)
130x8
150x8,8

Seated row
180 4x6

HS incline close grip press
140 3x10

2 scoops MMP. Not feeling it very much at all. Able to move quickly between sets and exercises however.

I screwed up on the bench. Actually I freaked out and didn’t stay tight. Haven’t taken 265 to the chest in a long time. I won’t get more than a second chance to hit it in Sacramento.

Shoulder’s back in alignment but it ain’t strong yet. Pressing has a different groove now. It’ll come along, but not in time to bench real big. I’ll take what I can get.

I give myself the benefit of the doubt and say that I’m too soon after testing squat openers and too soon after my previous bench day. Had to fit it in today though because I won’t have time tomorrow (meetings, meetings, meetings) and then the evening has plans till 11PM. Putting it off a day will shorten my recovery week.

Put another way - if I’m good for 265 tonight, I can likely get it in comp on the first try.
Bench is looking awesome. Are opening with 245 or 265?

You are too kind. I personally think my bench is shit. with 300 I’ll move to suck  But at least it looks like I’m going to hit my target weights.

I’m planning on opening with 245.

Nice going Skidster! I’m guessing those records are in jeopardy buddy. Ya gonna take a little time off prior to the meet?
Thanks DZ. We’ll see.

Yeah - taking a week off before the meet. Last openers tomorrow and nothing but light recovery workouts till the meet.

What Causes Heart Attacks

http://www.westonaprice.org/moderndiseases/heart-attacks.html

Not what you might think. Another blow to the cholesterol-blaming model of MI’s.

[From the article:]
The amazing thing is that these compounds [cardiac glycosides: digoxin and digitoxin from digitalis, and ouabain from strophanthus - added by me from another place in the article] are exact chemical copies of hormones made by our adrenal glands. (emphasis mine) And our adrenal glands produce these cardiotonics out of . . . cholesterol! Now we know why all the draconian dietary and pharmaceutical measures to lower cholesterol have not resulted in a decrease in the rates of MI, and why numerous studies have shown that as we age, those with the highest levels of cholesterol live the longest. When we lower cholesterol, we are depriving our bodies of the very substance they need to manufacture cardiotonics.
[end]

I have very high cholesterol, btw.

It isn’t whether or not you have cholesterol, it is whether or not it is fuzzy, dense or tangled. As long as you have fluffy cholesterol, you are in good shape and it is healthy. LDL/HDL splits don’t really tell you what you need to know, but the lipid profiles that will tell you are overpriced.

The real test is the inflammation index, but if you are lifting and exercising well, that is probably low, especially if you take fish oil.

If you read Taubes Good Calories, Bad Calories you can read summaries of all the studies done. Bottom line, the current positions on fat and cholesterol are driven by the belief that they may be relevant, without any fact based medicine or statistical verification and a good deal of evidence to the contrary.

Opening with 245 just to get on the score board.

Have you seen this:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4362041487661765149

Taubes discussing the theories presented in his book - which, for the record, I haven’t read.

I’m having the weirdest time on the site right now.

I can’t see any of my own posts anywhere on the site. The mods can see them, youse guys can see them, but I can’t and I wanted to edit my first post of this thread to update the days out from comp.

Please quote me when you comment so I know what you’re responding to. I’m like a vampire in a funhouse at the moment.

Deadlift opener

135x8
225x6
315x4
405x2
455x1 opener - verrrrry slow.

Front Squats
205x3
225 2x3
235x3
245x3
255x2 PR

DB Row
130 3x5
80 2x10

That’s it. My back is fried. 455 went so slowly and was so hard that I knew I wasn’t going to make my second attempt of 495/505. Retreat was the better part of valor tonight. I hit every rep and I wanted to keep it that way before the comp. A week’s layoff will be good for it.

Too much “warm-up” perhaps? Not that I’d know about that kind of weight!

nice pull!

Maybe, but 225 felt heavy. I think I’m just cooked from the last 6 weeks of squatting and deadlifting heavy in the same week. My training has had one or the other heavy each week, never both. It actually caught up to me two weeks ago, but I’ve been pushing through it. That’s why I’m not upset about my opener adn really pleased with the 455 triple last deadlift session. If I can pull that much tuckered I should do okay at the meet after a week’s rest.

Well - I saw my last few days posts for a minute there, but they’ve disappeared again.

Still seeing all my posts when I view the thread after logging out, though.

Hm - there’s a couple of push/pull meets in Rancho Cordoba May and August this year…

Okay - I went in and cleaned out every single T-Nation cookie the browser had, which logged me out. I logged back in and now I can see all my posts.

OKay - nothing but pump work from here on out. KB swings and some light benching, rowing and very light good mornings.

Oh - and eat like an oversized shrew…

You need to report the meals. Some of us fat guys trying to get skinny like to fantasize about food

Today so far:

1 quart of liquid yogurt
Ham and 3 eggs with hashbrowns and toast.
1 mass gainer shake
Lamb slices and a banana

Weight today: 190 - goal achieved. Lessee if I can push it a few more pounds…

If I want to break the record total for my weight [edit: and age] class, I need to make my third attempts in squat and deadlift.

I wish you all the best Skidmark. You’ve put a lot of hard work and research into your sport. All that’s left to do is stay focused and relaxed. Give’m hell Bro!

Thanks Streamline. Coming from someone who puts all their heart and soul into their chosen pursuit, that estimation means quite a bit.
