Amount of Daily Fish Oil?

I know this question has been posted a few times in the beginner forum, but I wanted to toss it up and get people’s feedback on my intake.

I’m currently taking 18 of the GNC brand fish oil caps as well as 2 Flameouts a day.

That gives me these numbers: (dha & cla only)
DHA: 7580mg
EPA: 10160mg
Calories: 566

Does that seem high to anyone? Over 550 cal/day in fish oil? I have snacks that don’t get that high!

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? I only have a small 90-pill bottle of the GNC stuff left, so I figured I’d ask WTF now before I buy more cheapies.

On a semi-related note; I found that CVS has 1000mg fish oil caps at $15 for 300 (and right now they are buy one get one free)

The problem is EPA and DHA have a well-documented ability to suppress the immune response. Although not as consistent as the immune effects, data also exist on the ability of EPA and DHA to increase bleeding time and oxidation.

Most healthy folks do not need more than 3-6 capsules per day to meet or exceed the amounts that show benefits. There are no definitive conclusions about optimal proportion of EPA:DHA, so to error on the side of safety, I recommend finding roughly an even mix.

20 caps a day is bordering on obsessive; just my opinion.

i take Carlson’s Fish oil capsules, somewhere around 15 to 20 per day. My joints have never felt better.

regardless of what brand i pick i stick to “extra strength” which are 400 mg EPA 200 mg DHA per 1000 mg pill

for over a year now i’m taking around 18 grams (pills) a day so that’s around 7.2 grams EPA 3.6 grams DHA

i would gladly take two or three times that amount but financially it is hurting me enough

every body is different but for me i have only had huge noticable benefits

  • no joint pain ever
  • much healthier skin
  • much healthier hair
  • much better mental focus
  • crazy vivid dreams every night (even before i started taking zinc)
  • very little soreness or DOMS, combine with proper PWO nutrition and even the craziest workout intensity leaves minimal soreness

and no immunity/sickness issues

I also think taking 15-20 caps of fish oil can be a bit much esp since theres 0.5 saturated fat in each one. I think the better solution is to just buy a more potent fish oil where you only have to take around 8 a day and maintain a high amount of DHA and EPA.

I was always 'if’y on that subject and felt that was a lot of saturated fat to be consuming. But if you keep fats from other foods down and just consume healthy fat from oils, PB, etc. it shouldn’t be that bad.

i can only say that my joints haven’t been too shabby in the past few months of such high intake.

i have naturally bad skin; thanks mom and dad
i have pretty sweet hair typcially…COME SEE HOW GOOD I LOOK!!
(i digress)
and i think that my healthy lifestyle keeps me away from sickness.

but yeah the only thing that worried me was the 550+kCal a day on f*cking fish oil, crazy!
