Alpha's Work II

Alpha, how you like that ARC trainer thing? This dude at work talks about wanting to buy one for his house all the damn time!

Good luck with the new schedule and all your training falling into place.

Are you sharing your insomnia with me? Gawd, it SUCKS!

It’s been cooling off around here finally. Super hiking weather. I walk after the bus takes the kiddos off to school.

I know you don’t want to hear it but I hope you get a little less busted soon  tell those kidneys to behave

btw, do you know of anyone in my area that is in the market for a bowflex/treadmill? Trying to get rid of both!

Ink: they are ok man
I was doing it more to loosen up my hip/back more than anything. i suppose anything can be challenging if you push yourself, but iMO it is no where near as tough as running. Thanks for checking in though man, great to see you around here!

MIM: i think i need a more extreme name other than insomnia. Sleep and i are NOT friends! But hey what kind of treadmill is it?" is it like a gym level one or like a “Sears version” treadmill that will slip with a 220 guy on it?

05November2010: Active Ruckovery

RUCKovery today
hiked at a fast pace for a little over 3 hours with a 50lb pack.

-I also got poked and prodded by a bunch o’ doctors today
hopefully i will get some more answers soon, but still more tests to come in the net few weeks if some of these issues don’t start clearing up
only time will tell.

anyway, I usually go to an “open” MRI place because if I have any irrational fear at all, it is a very slight panic about getting trapped in small places. This started after I had to have a surgery as a kid and they plastered my arms across my chest
it was miserable and ever since then I have trouble when i don’t have enough room to move my arms freely.

However, my normal MRI place was booked , so i just went to a convenient one close to my house. They put me on that slab and slid me into that machine and I felt like I was in a morgue or something!

being wider and thicker than the average bear, i had to hug my arms tight to my body and be pinned for almost an hour. Immediately upon realizing how tight the space was, my heart rate jumped, but then i tried to think of it as a good test of discipline and self control.

Anyway, I was able to calm myself down enough that i was falling a sleep half way through. I know this probably seems lame, but acknowledging your fears, facing them, and coming out better and stronger on the other side is always a good thing in my book. I love little challenges that test your mental and physical fortitude, even if they are little lame ones like this
and all of this medical stuff is nothing but controlling your irrational fears.

A man once said, “If you ever want to be great, than you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

great words to live by
I hope all of you have an awesome weekend!

Yeah. Closed MRIs suck. I find it funny (weird, not ha ha) that you have a regular MRI place.

You should try a bone scan though at some point. It’s a whole other test of self control. It isn’t enclosed like the MRI, BUT they made me drink a gallon of water and then lay still on a table for 50 minutes. It was to the point of being painful.

had a CAT scan done and it was not pleasant. I can’t imagine a guy your size. Whole different ball game. Plus I had to drink loads of fluid and I was hooked up to an IV. yurk.

I have come to realize fear of the “unknown” paralizes me most. So I just do it, and more often than not, there was nothing to fear. But that initial jump is tough as hell.

Dang that sounds rough, but i wouldn’t be afraid of small spaces. I get pissed off intead. I’m weird like that with pain as well.

Although i remember camping one time in one of those pull trailer type campers. It was my family and i, there was a couch pullout for a bed in the rear of the trailer and a foldup table in the front that could be made into beds. There were two beds on a shelf directly above both of them, one in the front and one in the back. The one in the rear was a rectangular space, and the one in the front, the roof curved downward from the open space towards the front where it got smaller. It sortof sloped downward as the roof got closer towards the front wall.

I remember sleeping up there in the one in the front one time and for the last time. I will preface this by saying that i’ve never been clausterphobic, but that night in my sleep i was. I remember trying to move in my sleep and i couldn’t(stupid sleeping bag and curved roof), which triggered a dream that i was buried deep underground and i was completely helpless. There i was buried, unable to move and completely helpless, and to make things worse the compartment i was buried in started to fill with water. This was the point that I remember screaming myself awake. I was wedged in against the wall at the point where it was lowest. It scared the crap out of my parents, but looking back, i’ve got to admit that was kindof funny.

Just thought i would share.

DoubleDuce: Brother, if I was in your situation, I am pretty sure I would have pissed myself! That is a LOT to hold in!

nlmain: i totally understand what you are saying. The unknown really is like the scariest thing. But the only time I ever feel anxiety about anything is before hand. Once it starts or i am actually in the situation it all goes away
i guess that is a good thing, but i totally know what you are talking about!

Heracles: Ha that is awesome man! It is not really that i am claustrophobic, it is just that i need to be able to move my arms
it is weird. But your dream sounds terrifying brother!

==============================================================================

I am broken. i needs to be fixed. Here is my current list of hurties

Brain Tumor
Failing kidneys
Strained right pec
Jacked up left shoulder
and a herniated disc in my back (i think) that is making the entire left side of my lower body numb on the outside and weak. Definitely something neurological going on
this is a bad thing

That said, my time in the gym is just rehabing at this point
I just hope i heal quick!

06November2010: Training

1a. Single Leg BB Bulgarian Split Squats: 135x5, 135x5, 135x5, 135x5, 135x5

2d. Hammer strength Trap thing: Fully loaded it with plates- 5 sets of 10 reps

Extract: Arc trainer for 20 minutes

Notes:

-i know it is hard to believe, but the split squats and leg press took just about everything that i had on my left leg
something is definitely going wrong neurologically
I may have to go to the doctor’s for this one

-and the bench/row stuff is so light due to the strained pec and jacked up shoulder
I am so beat up right now I can’t even train around these injuries!

-i am actually considering going to a body part split for a little while just so that i can go lighter and give certain parts of my body more rest between breaking them back down
just thinking about it though
not ready to commit to something like that yet

anyway I am still getting in there and my attitude is still good, I am just in a lot of pain 24 hours a day right now and my leg/back really won’t support any heavy weight, it will just give out
quite frustrating

Thanks for reading!

Hey alpha, hope all is going well. Just checking in to say that the chin up progression is awesome! I have worked up to a BW+35x3 and this week I had to hold a DB between my feet. It was even smoother this week than the previous week when I had a weight belt. To add to that, the BW chins I can feel are getting easier. Thanks!!

Hugs

If I were your girl i’d be a mess.
Now go kick some ass!

My best wishes for a swift recovery, brother! Hope you get this stuff sorted out quickly. Stay strong.

Pbclax1: man it is great to hear that it is working out for you! Keep at it brother, makes me proud! thanks for the kind words man!

nlmain: unfortunately she definitely is
i feel bad for putting her through it all. but thanks so much for the hugs and the cute pic!

aut-x-rs: thanks brother! I am sure I will get back to my old self soon!

07November2010: Recovery

I attempted to go for a long slow recovery run today but my leg kept giving out and collapsing beneath me on the downhills so i had to turn back and head home before I got too far away to limp my way to my door

frustration continues
but the upside is that it appears that my right foot (The one hurt during backflips) seems to have pretty much completely healed! Yea!

anyway i am still doing what i have to do to get better, just hope it happens sooner than later!

Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers!

I’m a bit broken at the moment, but not quite as badly as you. Your dedication and continuous effort to do something every day is inspirational, so thank you.

Alpha, I probably mentioned this before, but you’re continually in my thoughts. Each time I feel stressed, overwhelmed, or lazy I think about the trials you’re facing and it makes all my problems seem trivial.

All the best!

Sorry to hear about your troubles man. Stay up bro.

Jab1, Chi-town and Flash: thanks a lot for the kind words and encouragement, they really mean a lot
