Also, give me a break with the picture of John Daly. Physical shape does NOT define a sport: effective TECHNIQUE combines with physical strength (Dwight Howard) and/or endurance (Urijah Faber) and/or awareness (Jason Kidd). So, you can theoretically have them all (LeBron James), but not having one or two doesn’t make the game you play Not a sport. That’s absurd. Also, it doesn’t make people who don’t agree with you pussies. Grow up. [/quote]
As far as technique goes, see my post above about darts. So tell me, what physical attributes does golf tax? Strength? Endurance? Explosiveness (and if you’re going to say that swinging a club requires explosiveness, I’d point out that darts are not thrown slowly, but I wouldnt consider that explosive either)?
Oh, I’m sorry, you’re asking for an official declaration? I wasnt aware there was such a universal body. Please give me the contact info for The Int’l Governing Body of Determining the status of a Sport/Non-Sport and I’ll put my application right in. a) Again, if we are talking about absolute domination, we arent talking about how long it took somebody to get to the top, we’re talking about how much superior he was to all adversaries once he got there. b) that is a fair point about winning percentage being compared to peers, and an interesting way to look at it. But at the same time I would argue that you can’t simply set ceilings on accomplishments. It makes something like the bulls 72 win season look that much less impressive, because you’re “expected” to win, what, 65-70%, so something like a 87.5% win percentage isnt “that much” above normal. Likewise, while tiger may not be expected to match that 87.5%, there is still a much higher ceiling on what he COULD have done. (you could also argue that simply being able to accept such frequent defeat is puzzling in light of the fact that tiger is so competitive … but not so competitive that he simply cant accept losing. Just an interesting point, somehting i’d never really thought about) c) different eras, totally incomparable
Additionally, I also thought that Tiger has an added advantage in that being in an individual competition, he doenst have teammates to worry about. Jordan had to - and did, perhaps better than anyone else - raise the level of those around him, another mark of a champion that i think should be considered to contribute to his status of domination
