Age and Squat Quantity

i squat 1 x in a week , workout is intensiv and i need 3-4 days recovery to walk without pain. i am 35 now and have a good strengthlevel for myself (260 kg @ 111 kg raw).

my question is , how are the differences between 1 x a week intensive vs. 2 or 3 x a week with less intensity squattraining ? i have some pain in my right hip - legtendon (don’t know exactly what it is , but its not the joint). could it be more benefical to squat more often ?

Something is causing the pain. When you squat once a week it hurts. I’ll bet if you squat more than that it will hurt then too, regardless of the intensity. I know this because this happened to me. Figure out why there is pain, then fix that, then figure out the # of days.
FYI - my pain went away when I narrowed my stance.

Sounds like you might have an injury, so thats somthing different, but as far as age and squating. I’m 40yrs, and have been lifting sine I was a kid, the last couple of years I’ve found it benifical to squat more than once a week, keeps me loose, so I still squat once heavy (low reps, high sets) and latter in the week for reps, and this can be some front squats after deads, or even some goblet squats on upper body days (couple sets of twenty) even body weight squats through out the day.

When I do this, it seems to keep me from getting crippled from DOMS, the days following my heavy squat session. Age is just a number, as long as you keep moving it seems. 2cents

my pain is not that big , it comes at warm up for squats , after warming up its possible to squat nearly painless . in the past months i squated perhabs too close , now i use a medium wide stance . i rereaded the beyond - book and i like the templates where i sq and bench in one workout 2 times a week for example , 75%/85% volumework , beyond or advanced template. i would give it a chance after my big meet in february .

in general i want to know which squatfrequency has which benefits for getting stronger without newbiegains  .

NSAIDs and PVC go a long way. Some people have a problem with this advice and that’s fine, your body and your decision.

Also, if you’re increasing frequency, from 1x/wk to 2x, or from 2 to 3, I wouldn’t use a high volume program. I’ve tried to squat for higher frequency before and always broke down. Over the past six months I’ve been squatting pretty much every other day, always heavy, but keeping volume pretty low most of the time. It’s worked well, exceeded old PRs at every rep range by a wide margin.

Soon to be 46 - As anytimeJake said, if it feels like an injury - I am not qualified to advise. If it is just soreness - I get it. There are some weeks where I have a hard time bending over for 4-5 days. I actually love this though and can’t understand why anyone would not want it:) A few things though -

  • I have found that soreness seems to linger a few days past my actual recovery period. It is hard to explain, but say I squat on a Monday (this week actually) I was still pretty sore today (Thursday). However, I HAD to do dead lifts today because it is a longer workout for me and my schedule was light today. The weight flew. Once I started lifting - I realized as usual - I was good to go and fresh. There just seemed to be some soreness hanging around. Don’t be afraid to give it a go even if you are sore. You may be pleasantly surprised.

-Conditioning, especially sled, but sprints, intervals, whatever, the NEXT day work wonders. Yes it is painful. (there is a trend here) There must be something to getting the blood flowing in the sore muscles. Thank you body builders

“Movement is life.” - take this and do what you need to do.

At 48, I can only squat heavy once a week.

I can get away with twice a week for about 6-8 weeks, but then I need a week’s rest.

And if I lift heavy 3 times a week, 3-4 weeks, then I`m toast for a few weeks.

The way I know that is I experimented. Pushed my body to see what it can do.

Does that mean those are your numbers? No. They are mine. it just means to get to know your body and what it can do. Plazma/MAG-10/SWF are a game changer for me.

And get the hip looked at.
