After Boring But Big 3-Month Challenge?

Hi all,

In a few weeks I’ll be completing the 5/3/1 Boring But Big 3-month challenge.
On the 3rd month of the above system I’ll be moving onto doing 70% of the 1-rep training max on the second exercise of the workout (having done 50% and 60% on the 1st and 2nd months respectively).
Now - considering that I intend to continue with Wendler 5/3/1, on what % should I work in the upcoming cycles? I would presume that 70% may be too high, considering that I’m adding 5/10 pounds to my training maxes (and then obviously recalculating training % of the new numbers).

A further question: on the Boring But Big 3-month challenge the indications are to only do prescribed reps on all workouts. How should I do things in upcoming cycles upon completion of the 3 months? Should I push for as many reps as possible (short of failure) just on Weeks 2 and 3? Or what?

Change the reps - see the different variations of the BBB in the Beyond 531 book. It’s sold here on Tnation. Has many, many, many different variations of BBB as well as other training variations.

Sorry to bump an old thread (which I started)…
I’ve followed your advice Jim and have changed the reps on the second exercise. I follow the following template:

Monday: Military press (5/3/1) + Bench press (5x5@80%TM)
Tuesday: Deadlift (5/3/1) + Squat (5x5@80%TM)
Thursday: Bench press (5/3/1) + Military press (5x5@80%TM)
Friday: Squat (5/3/1) + Deadlift (5x5@80%TM)

Is this ok? Once I’ve done 3 months like this I’ll most likely move onto 5 sets of 3 reps at 90% and then after another 3 months move onto 5 sets of 1 rep at 100%TM.
But I have an atrocious doubt… Should I be training instead the same lift if doing 5 sets of 5 reps at 80%TM, i.e as follows:

Monday: Military press (5/3/1) + Military press (5x5@80%TM)
Tuesday: Deadlift (5/3/1) + Deadlift(5x5@80%TM)
Thursday: Bench press (5/3/1) + Bench press(5x5@80%TM)
Friday: Squat (5/3/1) + Squat(5x5@80%TM)

I hope my question is clear!

This is from a Wendler article
“I get asked all the time which one is better. There is no ?better? just different. And really, it?s the same amount of work, no matter which one you choose. Some people like the second option because you are doing the lifts two times per week.”

  1. Did you follow his advice to buy the Beyond 5/3/1 book sold on this site? All the answers to your questions are in there as was stated. It’s only $29.95 and well worth it.

  2. Please see point 1. If you didn’t buy the book then…yeah…your question is clear, but it’s already been answered.

Why not just try both versions and see which one you like better? I’m sure one will feel better to you than the other and you will stick with it. I do not believe it really makes that much of a difference which option you choose.

Give each template at least 12 weeks - that’ll give you a nice idea of which you prefer.

After many years you’ll have the same epiphany I had (quoted above).
