Adding Flavor to Cottage Cheese

I tried low-fat cottage cheese the other day and it had to be one of the nastiest things I’ve tasted in awhile. I’m not sure what was worst. The flavor or consistency. After reading posts that some people eat a whole cup before bedtime, I figured it’d be a great way to get some casein before sleep.

Is there anything you guys add to it that makes it taste better. Preferably something that won’t keep me up?. I’ve tried the packets that have the fruit for mixing (which tastes OK) but I don’t want the sugars before bedtime.

Personally, I love the taste of cottage cheese - I’ve been known to eat an entire container in one setting.

Try sprinkling some cinnamon or a sugar substitute on top. Maybe that will help you choke it down.

try a different brand,

it’s seriously not that bad.

I found getting used to chugging whey+water harder, personally.

I like to blend 1 cup until all the chunks are gone. Then when I am ready to eat it, I add half a scoop of chocolate protein powder and a little water. The consistency is like pudding.

Add fruit or you could buy containers with fruit already in it.

Cottage cheese + muffin (or crumpet) + honey, YUMMY!

Or on muffin with a slice of peach on top

I am happy enough with plain cottage cheese on a rice cracker. Honey, though, really helps and turns it into a great snack.

Try bacon bits for some more protein and it takes away from the texture and taste. I don’t like cottage cheese that much either but am using it in my diet.

Try Breakstone 2% SMALL CURD its the best IMO.

Cottage cheese can also be added to a sandwhich, works fine.

Oh - also - some cottage cheese tastes like crap, other brands taste really nice. If you don’t know that, they you might find yourself choking down some foul tasting brand and cursing cottage cheese.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I like the above because it takes care of the consistency issue and a half scoop of whey doesn’t have any sugar so it won’t keep me awake while masking the taste. Plus I get to piss the neighbors off by running the blender at 11:30 at night.

The brand I tried was breakstones cottage cheese doubles.
Robot or human?

With the fruit it was OK, straight it was pretty bad. And I like milk based products, I can eat a half dozen plain yogurts and enjoy each one. I’ve got a nose for spoiled food so it wasn’t that either. I guess I just don’t have a taste for it.

Cottage cheese makes the most amazing fluffy scrambled eggs! I use fat free cottage cheese in about a 1:2 volume ratio of CC:eggs, stick it in a blender and whip it up, then cook like normal scrambled eggs.

Learned that from my great grandma, who used the full fat cottage cheese and fried it in bacon grease, lol. It’s still quite good w/out the bacon.

Note- this does not work with just egg whites, or that pasturized egg stuff in a box. You have to use real eggs, and at least use half the yolks.

I like the Trader Joe’s cottage cheese best of all the ones I’ve tried.

Try putting some sugar free jelly in it. I like apricot.

Yeah, try a different brand. I can hardly notice a difference b/w regular and no or low fat.

i usually put in a packet of splenda, some peanuts, some whey powder, and some granola. Tastes great. Its good with just splenda by itself also.

I was gona say whey powder, flavors that range in from fruits to coffee types flavors. I’ve tried vanilla toffee whey powder, I thought it was pretty darn good.

I always like to make a shake out of my cottage cheese. About 3/4 cup-1 cup of it along with 1 tablespoon natural cocao, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter, and shitloads of spinach. Then I pour as much milk as I can. Comes out pretty sweet.

Sugar-free chocolate pudding + cottage cheese is quite nice.

Try powdered onion or garlic powder. Sounds gross, but it’s really good in a savory way

I’m with the OP- the stuff is foul.

But it’s good to get some suggestions on how to improve the taste and texture. I’ll definitely give it another go.

i know it’s been said, but i’ll add that i have also experienced DRAMATIC taste differentials between brands (breakstones being top, walmart and publix brand coming in last)

however, blended into a shake you cant tell the diff, so do that.
