And I tossed that crazy book aside…
I know better than that!
The book is called “Is your Thyroid making you Fat?” But I already know it is, so DUH!!
No one said I HAD to see the dietician… I have so many mixed feelings about her that I don’t know if I want to go back…she was saying some of the craziest things, and I really feel her info to be one-sized fits all…
“eating fat makes you fat.”
“Exercise is best for weight maintainence, not weight loss.”
“Eat 2-3 servings of carbs(45grams), even at night.”
Ya, stuff like that is really sticking out… :rolls eyes: She says I shouldn’t be afraid to eat carbs, and protein isn’t all that important…If I don’t start losing weight, then she can tweak things…
I just don’t know…
I don’t FUNCTION well on lots of carbs, and with a slower metabolism I wouldn’t think I could handle as much…
I did pick up another book while I was at the library yesterday…now, I might get hammered for bringing this up cause I don’t know how highly regarded this ‘diet,’ is here but you may be familiar with THE ZONE??
I like how he views food as a drug, and it effects hormones, etc…It seems like a good structure that fits me right now…
I never even saw your whole post about the nutritionist… that is weird. Maybe I just got a good one or maybe the diet for diabetes is somewhat different, I just can’t believe she recomended tha many carbs to you before bed…
Did you mention to her your gym goals and that yolu felt protien was an important part of that?
Actually the sheet she gave me says ‘food pyramid for Diabetes,’ on it…
If I followed it, and picked carbs carefully during dinner, it might not be so bad…And dinner is usually about 6, leaving room for a snack before bed(usually cottage cheese)
And I did all the calculations in THE ZONE book, for body fat and lean body mass, and it was pretty much what the impedance thing the diet lady did…
I’m going to stick to this plan she gave me…THE ZONE keeps you too ZONED out, lol…
No, I didn’t tell her about my gym goals, and I don’t think she would have cared…she was pretty anti protein…

This worries me. She’s there to help you reach your goals. You need to be able to tell her what you want, and not feel the need to blindly follow what she tells you to do. If she’s not able to take your opinions and needs into consideration, why waste your time with her?
I was afraid you would get a dietition like that. I wish I could refer you to the nutritionist that I saw several weeks ago. He seemed really on the ball and was right in line with what I was doing already.(maybe that is why I liked him).
I am going to talk to him one of these days about my foster daughter. She has ADHD and he was mentioning how a low carb diet would improve her behavior. She is a junk food addict and at 13 I don’t know if I can force her to change her habits.
I was referred to her by my PMC(primary care provider) It’s standard procedure I guess if you have concerns about your weight…
It’s a nutritionist that operates within the same place, and if I wanted something more I might be able to get referred out in town somewhere but that also takes time and there has to be someone in the network(covered by our insurance) that specializes in what you are asking for…otherwise you pay out of pocket$$$$$…
remember,I am on a military base, and as of now I take what I can get
The first meeting was the ‘clinic.’ It was me and another girl, more people were supposed to show up but they didn’t. I guess it was just the nutritionists’ chance to give her spiel, and I threw out questions when I could…
The next meeting will be a one on one follow up where I hope I can more clearly define my goals, ask more questions and explain what I have been up to as far as lifting goes…
I hate to be a downer, but I already feel like I’ve been ‘wasting my time,’ with the diet drama…but I didn’t know of my ‘condition,’ before…
Even though the nutritionist is a bit generic, I at least have a REAL LIVE person to help…If I still feel put off by her at the next meeting I can look elsewhere, or just start over and go on my own like I have been these past months…but honestly, I don’t want to do that…It would be nice to be guided the right way, at least until we figure where I need to be food wise to start losing this weight!
To measure your thyroid activity, take your temperature first thing in the morning while still in bed for three days straight.
For the best, most accurate measurement, start on day 1 of your cycle.
Do it while you’re still in bed, without moving, when you’ve just binked open your eyes.
That’s your basal temp. Is it below 97.2?
If so, you’ve got low thryroid.
If so, get you some iodine, Lugol’s solution, and start taking a drop or two every day and see if your temp doesn’t go up.
Well, there’s some other stuff, detoxing chlorides and bromides from the system, but I don’t want to get into all that right now.
The best book I know on resolving endocrine issues (thyroid, adrenal, metabolic syndrome) with diet and exercise is Diana Schwarzbein, The Scwarzbein Priniciple and the follow-up books.
If you want a good online trainer for your situation, hire Christian Thibaudeau.
Well, here we are again…it’s a new week!
Today is supposed to be squat day…I started to feel like I was getting a cold, but so far it’s just an annoying cough…
I slept a lot yesterday though
Geez girlie, You’re hard to find…I only read the last few pages of your new thread and I can see that you’re pretty frustrated with your nutritionist. I also read that you’ve enlisted Jenn Heath’s help, what does she say about the nutritionist and all these diet books you’ve found?
She seems like someone who could help you wade through the garbage advice.
Vacations really mess up your routine don’t they? I just got back into it and I have to go back to work next week.
Yep, the vacations were nice, but its always good to come back home!
Sorry I was hard to find
I just kept getting lost amongst the shuffle that is the figure life, and I didn’t really feel like I fit in…I’m still checking up on the non-figure girls though!
Bettie, I just read your log from beginning to end. Your attitude is incredible and I love that you’re questioning the cookie cutter, mainstream diet advice that you’ve been given. Not to mention that you are damn strong!
I don’t know what to tell you regarding the hypo-thyroid issue but I hope you’re able to find what works best for you.
I didn’t end up going to the gym yesterday, instead I went for a walk…and I found myself a walking trail that I didn’t even know existed!
I walked 20 minutes up and turned around, cause I had no idea how long this trail was! For all I know it could have gone around the whole base, and the base has it’s own zipcode, lol!!
I think the hubby might have gotten a little worried!
I’m following the food choices according to the cookie-cutter dietician just until we meet up again…and yesterday I came in a little over on carbs and a little under on protein/fats…just because noodles are an option doesn’t mean I should eat them! DOH!
I ordered a book yesterday that I’m excited for called, ‘The Thyroid Diet.’ I’m learning there are many MORE foods that I should stay away from(even CAFFIENE!!) I have a feeling it’s going to say eat protein and vegetables, lol…
I will make it to the gym today, damnit…leg days are not my favorite, but that just means thats where I need the work!
I’m just going to crawl under a rock now:) Sorry, I work with a Bonnie and you remind me of her, personality-wise (that’s a compliment). I am horrible with names and I think I should give up now and stop trying to learn them.
Just curious what other foods your book said that you should stay away from?
Do you have many trails by your place? I’ve got a ton of them by my place and I just adore being able to get “lost” in them when it’s been a long day.
I haven’t read in any books specifically what foods to stay away from…but I’ve been doing a lot of reading online, etc…a lot of women stay completely away from whole wheat/grains and live off of protein/veggies/good fats only…
Realistically I think that would be hard!! But is that the only way to live to be ‘normal?’
I live on base(in MD) and there are a plethora of nature trails and state parks around…on base, there are walking/bike paths, but I just happened to stumble across the trail yesterday…

Hey Betty–been following along for awhile.
So far–the protein/veggies/good fats are my “normal” way of eating. It took me about two weeks to really get the hang of it, and now it’s been six weeks for the protein/veggies/fats to be what I prefer. I have not had a “free” meal in those six weeks, so I think that’s helped. I am addicted to pumpkin seeds, so that’s my popcorn and if I sweeten them with Splenda, they’re my candy.
I remember we were doing the same program for awhile! Where have you been?
Do you just choose to eat this way or do you have a thyroid thing too? OR did you start the AD again?

Well, I went away from posting for awhile. I hired a trainer who wanted me to destress and posting so much here and on Precision Nutrition and my own blog was stressing me out. LOL. SO, I dropped it all cold turkey.
I think I may have thyroid issues–in fact, just went in for a blood draw this morning and should know in about a week. The reason for the nutrition was because of a yeast overgrowth that I was trying to take care of. I’m writing up a “report” to post somewhere–>have permission from my trainer to do so, but I only get one shot at it!
Anyway, the AD is out for me along with carbs in general. I get to have veggies, nuts, seeds, meats (all kinds) and no dairy. Can’t have peanuts or peanut butter, but I love almond butter, and I’ve discovered unsweetened almond milk. NOW I’d choose to eat this way. However, about four weeks ago, I was chomping at the bit to have a free meal or two. I worked through that, though, and all of my cravings for sweets have completely gone away. So–we’ll see what happens if I continue this.
I dragged myself to the gym yesterday…admittedly I was feeling so tired by the time the hubby got home that I almost didn’t go…but I know its best just to go, cause once I start lifting I forget I was ever feeling like crap!
I went easy on myself and just did rack pulls…
Since my legs aren’t totally wasted today will be Squat day!
