A Very Serious Joke

Hallowed - don’t want to argue with anyone but you’ve seen my back pics and such and I don’t ever do more than 5 reps. or hardly ever. 5x5 or 5/3/1 without pussying out on the weight will work wonders. I can show you picks of when I was doing 10-12 vs now. Major difference in mass.

my french 2 cents

That’s a big MP rep pr. COngrats. That’s such a painfully slow moving lift for me. I like how you thank baked goods for your success. Ahhh delicious sweetness.

The people demand lifting vids.

Hey Hallowed, question for ya, did you start out on 5/3/1 or did you do something else to build a bit of strength base first. I like your physique and it is kind of what my other half is aspiring to. She has agreed to let me train her starting new years.

Was thinking to start her out with starting strength for 12 weeks to teach her the basic lifts and concepts, and get a base of strength then switch to something more specific.

What are your (or other people’s) thoughts on that as a plan?

Her current training is whatever random crap the ‘Trainer’ in the gym gives her coupled with 30 mins on the running machine.

She really wants to get in better shape and is happy (unlike most women I know) to put on some muscle.

This is how most of ust started - 5*5 or basic strength. 5/3/1 will be good a couple months down the road. you don’t want her near max if her form isn’t settled yet.

great to hear she isn’t scared of a little muscle - good luck

IMO 5/3/1 is better for intermediates than beginners… progression template is a little too slow for those who are just starting out, use those newbie gains!

Totally!! I rocked 5x5 and made silly gains with that. And I still use 5x5 to this day, but admittedly, I’m not a PL type.

I also really like(d) volume, so I was a bit of an accessory whore. That was the most fun for me as a newb - trying out all the “new” exercises.

AND, laugh all you want, but I was introduced to lifting though the book “lift like a man, look like a goddess” (Cosgrove) and that had a pretty fun 6 month program. I tweaked it here and there to make a bit more challenging, but it taught me a lot about lifting.

Oh thank you Frenchie. I can’t count anymore, so that’s nice to hear.

Oh NOES I’m behind in my OWN LOG! Work is abso banana nutz right now but I want to address this before I play catch up.

I ACTUALLY Started with Body for Life! S’true!

SO here is my thoughts… I think that the best thing you can do to help someone get into this is to TEACH THEM THE PRINCIPAL of Progression. How each workout will be just that lil bit better than the workout before wether its one more rep or five more pounds on the bar. Teach her to write her own workout, track it and Make that progression every.single.workout. I was taught this early and it is what got me hooked so fast.

As a beginner you can progress every single workout for A YEAR OR MORE! Srs. Doing that tiny bit better each time kept me coming back and feeling like a winner and SEEING my strength progress. Plus for any of us with addictive tendencies this FULLY APPEALs… and also those of us who may be just slightly competitive. There aren’t many who have NO competitive streak at all. In this case you are competing against yourself and the weights.

SO, the principal of progression and teaching her two track her own workouts and always always progress is my numero uno advice for beginner weight training. Whichever program! Like I said I DID BODY FOR LIFE! Lol and look at me now. It was enough to hook me in.

x2 on starting with Body for Life. It shows you the basic structure that so many of us take for granted - eat right, lift heavy, be consistent, do it as a lifestyle.

Body for Life is for gurlz.

oh, right…carry on~

Hoping for more H training notes.

Thanks for the feedback (and to everyone else)

That was kind of my thinking. Keep it simple, focus on teaching the basic thinking behind training and keeping logs etc

Yup, he was just training his powerlifting pause.

No dresses? I stick to that most of the time. Somehow I look more manly in a dress. Like a bad trannie.

I think for me slow moving too… probably for all of us OHP and BP just painfully slow increases for girls. Thats just a theory. I will add 5LBS to my max for next cycle for sure though.
