Hey Hallowed, question for ya, did you start out on 5/3/1 or did you do something else to build a bit of strength base first. I like your physique and it is kind of what my other half is aspiring to. She has agreed to let me train her starting new years.
Was thinking to start her out with starting strength for 12 weeks to teach her the basic lifts and concepts, and get a base of strength then switch to something more specific.
What are your (or other people’s) thoughts on that as a plan?
Her current training is whatever random crap the ‘Trainer’ in the gym gives her coupled with 30 mins on the running machine.
She really wants to get in better shape and is happy (unlike most women I know) to put on some muscle.
Oh NOES I’m behind in my OWN LOG! Work is abso banana nutz right now but I want to address this before I play catch up.
I ACTUALLY Started with Body for Life! S’true!
SO here is my thoughts… I think that the best thing you can do to help someone get into this is to TEACH THEM THE PRINCIPAL of Progression. How each workout will be just that lil bit better than the workout before wether its one more rep or five more pounds on the bar. Teach her to write her own workout, track it and Make that progression every.single.workout. I was taught this early and it is what got me hooked so fast.
As a beginner you can progress every single workout for A YEAR OR MORE! Srs. Doing that tiny bit better each time kept me coming back and feeling like a winner and SEEING my strength progress. Plus for any of us with addictive tendencies this FULLY APPEALs… and also those of us who may be just slightly competitive. There aren’t many who have NO competitive streak at all. In this case you are competing against yourself and the weights.
SO, the principal of progression and teaching her two track her own workouts and always always progress is my numero uno advice for beginner weight training. Whichever program! Like I said I DID BODY FOR LIFE! Lol and look at me now. It was enough to hook me in.
Thanks for the feedback (and to everyone else)
That was kind of my thinking. Keep it simple, focus on teaching the basic thinking behind training and keeping logs etc
