Well no one is taking my thread in the off topic section seriously so ill ask here lol. is there a real good marine workout out there? ive been looking around the internet and T-Nation all day and i cant find anything. or atleast nothing i think will actually work. thanks…
Define “marine workout”.
Take a look at Jeff Martone’s TAPS program.
im not sure how to define it. i seen a program on T-Nation somewhere but i cant find it. it was based around pushups pullups, dips, crunches, and running. reps and sets increased over time.
what are the benefits of training like this? obviously endurance but i dont wanna switch from weights to strength training and lose strength and mass. is it possible to get stronger and gain more mass off a program like this?

You want some kind of workout, but you’re not sure what the purpose of the workout is? Sorry, that sounds funny. I’ve never seen a workout like that, and I’ve been reading T-Nation for a while now. Maybe Death by Bodyweight or something?
nah im not a troll. id make this a little better if i was a troll? but yeah i see a lot of big marines and it seems like what they are doing is working… sooo i want to find a workout thats close to what they do… and i do know the purpose of the workout… mainly endurance right?? i was just wondering if i would lose strength or mass from doing it
Go visit your local recruiter and enlist. Then you will get that workout firsthand.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat.

The truth is (and I grew up with Marines and was one myself) They primarily train in running and bodyweight exercises, the large Marines you see lift because it is an image thing, its about being the baddest mother in the valley. They have awesome lifting facilities on every base, and if your not in the field you lift or you run.
Nice way to put it Matt
alright, thanks guys.
dont know if thats what your looking for, but I thought I’d give it a shot since no one else is…
Marine training, at least when I was in from 93-97 was mostly about strength-endurance and pain tolerance. Run till your lungs are about to explode (preferably uphill in sand), do pushups till you’re in a puddle of your own sweat, and plenty of calisthenics (mountain climbers, jumping jacks, leg lifts, etc.)
This is partially because of the tasks they’re prepping for and partly because they lack equipment. The gyms were nice, but even there you’re not going to be able to have the whole battalion lift weights at the same time. Honestly crossfit is probably a closer match than T-Nation, mostly due to different objectives.
alright thank u!
sprint intervals, intense calisthenics, fartlek courses(3-4miles w/ random exercise thrown in around the course, lots of pullups, all day every day, dips, core work, box jumps, more sprint intervals and pullups

Your last sentence says everything. Asking about a marine program and this and that, but when it comes down to it, you want to become stronger and gain more mass, and maybe wouldnt mind doing some endurance training but not at the expense of not getting bigger or stronger, and you like the sound of Marine Training.
A large percentage of marines are fit because they are in a terrific motivated situation to want to be in good shape. They are surrounded by hundreds of others like them that are fit, they need to be able to easily handle the physical tasks presented to them, their life depends on them being fit (to a certain extent), and like everyone else they want to look good. Most Marines I know are big because they lift. Their is the occasional person that swears their physique is a byproduct of bodyweight exercises and that works well for very few people as far as mass is concerned.
Lets put it this way, if you just do bodyweight training, you WILL lose muscle and strength assuming you are at a decent level from weight training. If you do a combination of bodyweight Marine Training and weights, which is what most ripped Marines do, this will require more effort and motivation on your part with possibly less results than traditional weight training. Think about this. How many Ex-Marines do you know? How many are (relatively) fat shits now? There you go. Why dont they just keep doing their marine trainiing if it is so great? Well number 1 it is hard as shit to do and near impossible to push yourself that hard without others around you doing the same. Number 2, those Marines that do want to stay fit realized they could get all or most of the aesthetic benefit they wanted while cutting out everything that improved other not-noticeable physiological adaptations, which is all or most of the hardest work.
And to answer your question I do not know of any such programs. Lastly…
“what are the benefits of training like this? obviously endurance but i dont wanna switch from weights to strength training and lose strength and mass. is it possible to get stronger and gain more mass off a program like this?”
What?..I mean huh? Obviously endurance but I dont wanna switch from weights to strength training and lose strength and mass. What?
Switch from weights to strength and lose strength? What do you want man?
Do you want to get bigger? Just say so and we will point you in the right direction, because if that is what you want, this is not the right way to go.
PT! GOOOD for you!! GOOD for me!
you know… you dont have to stop lifting…i didnt… just eat some steaks and you’ll be good… yes, your body will adapt itself to carry less weight so it can move faster for a longer period of time, but just eat more.
when i first joined, i weighed 145 lbs.
i was in shape, could do 25 pullups, etc.
now 4 yrs later i’m at 195 not and 20 of that i’ve put on in the last 6 months… because thats how long i’ve been taking in more protein/food
Alright well I guess i’ll stick with lifting. What split looks the best?
