A No-Deadlifting Gym?

Up until earlier today I belonged to a commercial gym called ‘Planet Fitness,’ so of you have probably heard about this place, they’ve got locations all over.

It’s got the typical things going on at a commercial gym, guys wearing their belts for every exercise, curls in the squat rack, the whole nine yards.

Well, today I was doing my set of heavy deadlifts (Heavy for me anyway), and the owner came up to me and told me that I wasn’t allowed to deadlift in the gym.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? This is the only gym I’ve ever seen that’s not allowed their members to deadlift, or restricted them from any exercise for that matter.

Just thought I’d share that.

Yeah, I got kicked out of Bally’s for the same thing.

You should have read this thread before joining there.

why not pretend to be a soy sucker and go to the manager and tell somethign about how bad are muscleheads and the only place you can eb without them and you can’t do this excersise or something like that

they might let you DL

although If I lievd in the US I’d probably bancroupt the place by getting t-men sign up and eat all the pizza

Don’t they have signs posted on the wall saying no DL? This is a standard rule for all Planet fitness locations. My advice is find another gym quickly, don’t hesitate, just cancel the membership and run away as fast as you can. metrosexualitis can be contagious and you may already be infected and not know it. any gym that doesn’t allow deadlifting isn’t serious about physical fitness and isn’t worth the price of membership.

What, they didn’t sound the Lunk Alarm on you?

Shame.

Any gym that doesnt allow deadlifts is a pathetic joke…leave that gym ASAP, its only restricting you from becoming bigger, stronger, and faster…leave those gym for the soccer moms, metros, and wannabes, get ur ass outta there before your filed under one haha

We should unite and burn those gyms down

It’s one of their rules so you have to respect it, or leave to another place of business. Places like this are the reason garage gyms spring up.

I always thought you guys were joking about scrawny kids weighing 165 giving workout advice and the how’s on proper exercise execution, personal trainers giving their input when not asked, getting asked not to squat, deadlift or grunt heavy but the other day I won a membership to the YMCA so I figured I’d check it out considering it’s free. What a fucking joke. That place was filled with douchebags which I rarely get to see at my regular gym. I honestly thought some of you guys made this shit up but now I’ve seen firsthand.

I cancelled right before I left yesterday, and went over to the other gym in town and joined up. The new one is more of a health club, but not a chain. At least I don’t think it is. It’s called Creative Health and Fitness, for anyone in the southern CT area, it doesn’t look half bad. The whole basement is just free weights, and there were about 5 people down there Monday afternoon around 5:00. So far so good.

YMCAs vary quite a bit. There are several Ys in our area. Buy a membership to one and you can get into any of them. I do all my lifting at two of these gyms and it is a great atmosphere in both locations. Don’t run all the Ys down 'cause yours is filled with posers.

Glad you cancelled your membership and quickly found a new place. Places like Planet Fitness are only interested in money. Now I know it’s a business and you have to make money, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of what your members want to do.

Good for you dude. Getting stronger and better at your athletic pursuits is all about environment. Find (or create) the best environment to meet your goals and never settle for anything less, especially when you’re paying a monthly fee for it.

My former gym converted to a planet fitness in July. I worked out there 1 day after the conversion and that was all the convincing I needed that it was time to finally build a gym in my basement. Best decision I ever made.

haha i went to my local ymca once and they had a small room with a couple of benches, a power rack and a basic supply of dumbells. the room was separate from the main room which was all weight machines surrounded by treadmills and elipticals galore.

the free weight closet was actually pretty cool 'cause nobody seemed to use it and i got a good workout and thought i’d come back whenever i needed to lift during primetime.

but the rub came after my squats when i went out to the machine section for some ham work and was told i couldn’t “work in” on any of the machines. they were for “circuit training”. if i wanted to use a machine i had to perform an approved cicuit that included the machine. talk about fucked-up !

I belong to planet fitness and have heard all of the horror stories about no grunting and no chalk, etc etc. But for some reason I keep going back because its only 10 bucks a month and the guy that works the desk while i’m there doesnt care at all about his job. Other people have scolded me for deadlifting including a grandmother age lady who asked me, “if my mother knew i was into this kind of behavior.” For the most part its just another wimp filled commercial gym.

I wouldn’t even know how to respond if someone told me that.

I’d ask them if it was written in the contract I signed to train at the gym, and if it was, I’d find another gym; if it wasn’t, I’d continue on with my workout and complain about harassment if they kept interrupting my workout to tell me that.

That said, there was a circuit-training-only area at a Golds I went to in Virginia, but that was a small room compared to the rest of the gym, and there was plenty of the same equipment out in the rest of the gym so it was actually a good idea.

OMG! That is so gay. I would have done it anyway.
