A New Animal: JDM135 for 1-2-3-4 plates

3/8 Tuesday jssp w5d2
Upper body pushing and pulling.
3X8 bench press 135, 155, 175
3 rounds 5 reps each: dumbbell flye; dumbbell bench press; dumbbell curl. 40,45,50.
a bunch of pullups, some weighted.
some horizontal cable rowing
incline bench press 3 x 8: 95, 115, 135
3x20 captain’s chair leg raises

A feel-good session, and the last one for several days. Leaving tomorrow for a week.

Edit to add: The Ironmind sandbags arrived yesterday. I won’t be able to fill them until I get back from my trip, but I’m really looking forward to this. I think I’ll go ahead and put 200lb in the big one, to force myself to reckon with it. I may not be able to shoulder it like I can the 150, but I bet if I can get enough reps picking it to a bear hug it’ll help with the 405lb deadlift goal. And since I’ll have a 100lb too, I can use that for shouldering and just up the reps - and maybe overhead pressing? Fear will be the limiting factor there I bet.

Also to add: The high-volume push press session Sunday was really good for me. Triceps, lat, and finally a deep delt soreness. I guess “shoulder girdle” is the phrase. I needed that.

A quickie before heading to the airport.
8x8 front squats with 10 secs rest per set, 95lb. A painful 4 or 5 minutes!
30 power cleans, 5 emom for 6 rounds, 155lb.

10 minutes, did some good. Bye now.

If you see me squatting more than 405 these days, stop me and punch me in the face.

Vacation over but still stuck. Had to spend the night in Atlanta and will be home 24 hours behind schedule. It has been a truly miserable return trip.
So, revisited the hotel gym workout using a pair of 50s.
30 minutes EMOM
-6 Squats with both 50s in front rack
-10 snatches left
-10 snatches right
-repeat, 10 rounds total/30 mins.

Could really feel the lack of sleep.
Lol hotel gym ceiling was too low so i carried them outside.

Ended up getting home 2 days late. Incredible number of Delta flights were delayed or cancelled. It was a really, really tough experience with 4 kids.
But now im back! Filled the new sandbags, now i have 100lb and 200lb:

Dude, I don’t say it enough—in fact, maybe I’ve never even said it here before—but the fact that you do what you do with 4 kids is absolutely amazing. Good on you!

Oh, and welcome home! Those sandbags look gnarly.

Thanks man!
Yeah, brag here, but during the trip at least 8 different people congratulated us for having such well behaved kids. They did awesome. But it ain’t easy being the kind of parent to raise kids that way.
Oh and gnarly: i could barely pick up the 200lb. First workout with it will probably just be to pick it up a few times.

You are really going for broke with a 200lb bag. You could have just filled it to 150lb and added more when you can handle it.

Indeed it’s going for broke. Worst case scenario i can lower back down but would be a pain. But ive used 150 for a while and figured filling to 200 would be like “burning the ships”.

Try it on a Takata timer. 20 seconds to pick it up: 10 to rest. Being on a timer helps with intensity. I did something like that here

They will wreck you good!

Thanks Pwn.
I noticed you pick and carry crossways. Thus far ive picked from a fore-and-aft position with bag between my feet, and carried in a bear hug.
Do you spread your feet to fit the bag between, or stand in front of it?
How would you compare crossways to fore-and-aft for the pick?

3/20 jssp week something day nothing
(Still haven’t adjusted to being back. Tomorrow the normal routine returns)

200lb sandbag picks. Every 30 seconds for 8 picks in 4 minutes. Thanks @T3hPwnisher.
I did half the picks fore-and-aft and half sideways. The bag is so big around compared to me that i had a lot of trouble lapping it and getting my arms around, especially crossways. Holy crap this wiped me out, working with this bag is going to make me big and strong

Edit to add: In the crossways position I was rarely able to get the bag what I would call “high enough”. I’ll do this again before too long and get a video, see if anyone has tips other than “be stronger” which, of course, I must do.

Glad you found it effective dude! Per the question: the bearhug carry never made a lick of sense to me, but seems to be how a lot of dudes prefer to pick up a bag. I like having it sideways. You have to get your feet UNDER the bag: like literally shove them underneath or roll the bag on top of them. It’s hellacious, haha.

I have used both the cross ways and the length ways pick up over the past couple of week. I am a rank beginner a this stuff but here are my observations.

Accrossways; Got to get shins right up to the bag and use a little more back to pick it up and lap it. When I carry it this way is allows for a little more breath but I tend to carry it lower and hold it more with my arms.

Lengthways: Need to pick it up right in the middle of the bag, and get your hands right under it, rolling it onto one hand and then getting the other under as it rolls back works for me. As you pick it up your hands/forearms create a channel around the back as the sand shifts to either end. This channel allows me to get my arms all the way around the bag and lock my hands together. When I bear hug carry the bag it is a little higher and feels quite secure but this puts a lot of pressure on my chest and makes breathing really hard.

I am guessing how long and strong your arms are will make a difference on what technique works best for you. I know how hard my 176 feels so that 200 is going to be brutal for you for a little while I would think.

Thanks mate, great breakdown on tge different styles.

Yeah absolutely backbreaking. Im already sore just a few hours after the 8 picks, and one of my knees is cranky. Squats tomorrow so yay.
Ill eventually be able to carry this thing but haven’t tried to yet. I weigh 186 right now and my squat and dead are about half of yours so yeah, its gonna be brutal!
