Just gonna throw in another congrats. Pressing is awesome, so getting awesome at pressing makes you doubly awesome.
I don’t think you need to set precise goals in order to get better in any area in life. Focusing on improving bit by bit every day rather than looking at the scoreboard all day has worked better for me.
Seems like you get it though.
If it took 20 sec that then it would be right up there on the RPS scale. Maybe even an 11. congrats on hitting a PR and all the more sweater when you have to grind for it. Quality.
Thanks for all the love, everybody! It means a lot!
Personally, I look at other training logs here to see what is actually possible and to see that people have, through hard work, made it to the level of strength that I want to be at. It shouldn’t be discouraging imo… It should be inspiring.
And this is the reason why it’s only fair to compare yourself to yourself. No two people have the same circumstances. All you have to do is be better than yourself at this moment, over and over and over.
Keep killing it man. You’ve made amazing progress this year
Awesome news man.
Should we be concerned you’d rather kill someone rather than take steroids?
Absolutely mate. I like to use others as an inspiration for what’s possible but I try to avoid comparisons because its too easy to cherry pick them. I also have the natural build and bone structure of a small bird so I’m aware I’m probably never going to be Mr Olympia, but I’ve got plenty of opportunity to get better than I currently am.
Seems sensible. If he’d kill without them, imagine what he’d do with roid rage.
You got me legit laughing out loud, thanks!
You can always work things out at your advantage. I used to “woe is me” at my tiny bones and frail joints, but now I try to train differently and appreciate the facts that these make me aesthetically look bigger than some other person with more mass.
Ed Coan said he knew he wasn’t gonna be pretty so he didn’t do that much abs lol but see how he turned out…
5/26/2021, Wednesday
Gym trip this morning. Good for my sanity. It’s not part of my program so I can do what I want, and I wanted to try some “bro-style” stuff.
Superset 1: Bench press/DB row
BP 135x10, 155x10, 155x10
Rows 65x12,12,12
Superset 2: Cable pec flye, pullups
Flyes "7"x10, "8"x10,10
Pullups 5,5,5
Superset 3: Rope pushdowns, rope upright rows
3 sets of each in the 10-ish rep range with some burnout at the end.
Alternating dumbbell curls, 35lbs.
Farmers walk there-drop-back, 85lb DBs (close to my bodyweight).
Damn close to dropping at the end, left grip was failing, but I made it back.
Dips: 25 (one set).
That was fun, invigorating, didn’t want to die, didn’t feel miserable! and was so friggin pumped at the end my arms were busting my sleeves. Would have been a great time for pictures!
I can totally see why so many people train that way - it’s probably the dominant training modality, TBH - you could do that “for fun” a couple times a week and love it. Whereas what I and most people here do, is brutal and you dread it all week and it’s not fun.
I’m glad I tried this, I need a broader horizon of possibilities as I plan new goals/pick a program for the second half of the year.
Could you elaborate on that? Seems like a good idea! I’m not knowledgeable about different types of training or aesthetics (see today’s experiment lol)
Well my wrists are 6,5’’ for instance. My forearms are 13’'.
Now you take someone with 7,5’’ wrists and 13’’ forearms. My arms look bigger… And it’s the same with the rest of the body, hence why I look heavier than 82 kgs ahah
Obviously I cannot talk for everybody with frail joints, but I reckon it’s probably better to train with more quality, technique or strength-skill work rather than brute force, or use some pre-fatigue or activation à la Mountaindog (where for instance we train the bench press second, after some dumbbell or machine stuff, and the joints do feel better! Also you probably use a bit less weight)
I’ll measure tonight if I remember to. My wrists are similar, maybe a bit smaller.
Using lower weight to make the joints feel better - THAT really makes sense to me. TBH I think that’s why I front squat instead of back squat - because it’s a “harder movement” I can’t use as much weight.
To totally put the ego aside and pre-fatigue, for example, before the big compound movements, honestly sounds pretty intelligent. Except on the press LOL, that number MATTERS!
Trouble is then you can’t compare numbers with other gym bro’s and get an ego boost LOL but I’d like to think I’m mature enough not to care.
Mine barely clock over 6 inches. Can be good for the ego sometimes though.
I’m 6’1’’ also ![]()
It’s pointless comparing yourself to someone because you’re two completely different people, with a different training age, morphology, background, genetics, potential drug usage etc
Then what kind of programming is this person using? You feel stronger but actually he was doing high volume and you were doing high intensity so yeah…
Soon i’ll be doing speed work and it can be hard on the ego, because I’ll be using like 110 kgs for the deadlit ahah, and I KNOW some people will try and compare to me. I swear to God this lift inspires the most ego-competition I’ve ever seen. When some people see me deadlift they always want to try it just to prove themselves
Me too dude, me too too.
I was built to get things off high shelves. Not heavy things, obviously.
Jesus there’s always worse indeed ![]()
I apparently have 7 inch wrists and 11.5 forearms. Biceps, eh, let’s not go there. Legs and knees that chickens point at whilst laughing hysterically. I still think it is possible to move some poundage, even with our tiny, brittle frames.
100%
I may have the bone structure of a small chicken, but realistically that’s not the reason I haven’t reached my goals.
I think I’ve used this picture before, ripped straight from Jim Wendlers public blog, but it’s worth noting the calf and ankle size of these thousand pound squatters. It’s not all genetics.
Which doesn’t mean we won’t use it as an excuse when convenient.
Indeed but again the argument of fast-twitch fibers blah blah blah could always come up. No point.
Rizki Juniansyah (73ks) just clean and jerked 194 kgs/427 lbs at 17 years old. 17.
ROFL
That doesn’t mean I’ll cry and not try to get stronger though. Still aiming for the 3 plates bench and jerk, 4 squats and 5 deadlift!
