A**hole at Gym has a Problem with PL

It was because you are young and smaller, and he was older, bigger, and a know it all.
You should have asked him if he ever trained to failure.

When I was younger I was training at a commercial gym, doing pull ups. This beefy looking guy is walking around using sponges when doing curls (in the rack). He comes up and says that I should get gloves, or even better sponges like him, so I don’t get callouses. I just thanked him, and said I would think about it. People are well intentioned with their opinions.

Throughout my time training I have had many well intentioned gym members come and tell me how to do pretty well every exercise or or lift. I think that this happens to everyone at some time in their lives, and not just with lifting either. It could be at work or any place really. Just be polite and laugh it off.

Oh as for your miss on the squat. That’s why they make those pins.

Good advice. How you get past this is jsus by getting older and stronger. Of course I have my own stuff so I don’t deal with gyms.

these thee words will end any confrontation:

“U mad bro?”

Rinse & repeat until issue is resolved.

Possible Alternatives:

“Get mad kid”
“Keep raging bud”
“LOL wow…maad…” (Pronounce L-O-L)
“U mad? Bad…”
“Stop raging scrub”

You’re welcome, with great power…

Very rarely do I agree with these “bitching about the gym” threads, but here I definitely do.

He has no business getting on you like that. I agree that you should find another gym.

This advice is 100%, grade A, retarded…the guy will just raise his voice and make the dude feel like shit

I think OP handled the situation (assuming its not made up) about as well as possible truthfully…ignoring the dude in the gym next time is the next step, and if he keeps saying shit to you eventually tel him to fuck off

bullshit. the old guy is used to people walking away and not calling him on his bullshit like you’re telling him to do. the old guy had no intention of being engaged in intelligent conversation. the old guy was just using the kid to make himself look cool. his advice was not meant to help only to embarrass.

the OP should respectfully ask the guy to explain himself. once guys like this are asked to explain themselves they fold like lawn chairs.

he can avoid any future confrontation by not giving the guy what he wants. YOU are telling him to ignore the guy until he gets REALLY mad, then explode on the guy and swear at him. and you say that MY advice is retarded?? really??

Kid: Ummm…excuse me, sir, can I have “5-10 minutes” of your time to converse with you on the merits of your training philosophy versus mine?
Old man: Why the hell would you want to do that? I’m much bigger than you so obviously I know what I’m talking about
Kid: Well…ummm…“I demand to know why do you not test your 1 rep max?”
Old man: I didn’t get these guns from testing my 1 RM kisses gunz…nobody needs to do 1RM to get hyoge
Kid: well…ummm…that didn’t last 5-10 minutes…umm…good day sir

Yup, you’re right bears…great advice man…giving a guy seeking attention the attention that he seeks is definitely the right way to go about things that have absolutely no bearing in the grand scheme of your life…im sorry for calling your advice retarded earlier, I was wrong and you were right, this is exactly how to handle a situation…

Fuck that guy man. I like BB’ing and all, but way more people get hurt bbing than PLing thats for sure.

Reason #1: You don’t take massive amounts of diuretics to go on stage at a PL meet.

Ask him if he know’s who Johnnie Jackson is and have him explain why a profession BBer does heavy singles.

The simple “you’re wrong” is the easiest I’ve come up with, considering I work at the gym and don’t want to get fired… If they say something else repeat.

If you are confident you would be amazed at who will listen to you or at least respect you. I have the same issue at home. There are a ton of ship yard workers who come to my YMCA that like to help and sometimes have good things to say. Sometimes you need to be blunt, they kinda shut up after that. One guy told me if I kept having someone hold my feet down while I did my makeshift glute-ham raises I would get a hernia.

If you research your shit dont worry about what others say.

Use it to fuel your motivation. Showing some serious progress should be a good way to shut him up.

Mixing non powerlifters and bodylifters is always a no-no. Bodylifters train differently and have different goals than the powerlifters. Most people will respect that other people have other goals, but some will not, and you always have the stereotype old boydbuilder who thinks he knows everything there is to know in this world about lifting.
If it’s a good mix I actually think it’s mostly positive to mix bodybuilders with powerlifters. Where I train we have a bunch of amateur bodybuilders along with some decent and a few really good powerlifters. We also have a gang of strongman guys, most of them compete at an amateur level but two of them are world class. Seems to work fine, we can all learn at least something from eachother, right?

The problem arises when there’s either disrespect or a lack of understanding, I think there’s a bit of both going on in the OP’s case.
My opinion was put wrong here, I immediately understood this when I posted it, but I was too lazy to correct it. I agree 100% with all of your statements, and I agree esp. with your last sentence. So, now that is cleared, so nobody else will get all fired up about my opinion. I should rather have written that the goals and methods of that of a power lifter and that of a body builder differs. There should however be no problems for the two to coexist in the same space. Saying something else would be stupid. English not being my mother language, sometimes what I intend to say becomes different to what I really meant, and esp. when I am tired and/or lazy. :)
Hey man, just to be clear I didn’t get fired up about anything. Also just for the record, your english seems no worse than mine. I haven’t spent a single day in an english speaking country but fortunately I’ve read a lot of stuff in english both in my education and my hobbies so I’m doing ok anyway. I totally agree that sometimes it’s hard to get the right message across, happens a lot when I’m multitasking and thinking in two different languages.

He just saw a young guy lifting and he thought he could boost his ego by calling you out in front of other people.

This. Ask him how some wear and tear on your spine someday in trade for a lifetime spent relishing in the simple physical challenge of heavy athletics is somehow worse than the tackle box of viagra, hypertension meds and statins that his old ass probably subsists on.

We’re all taking a dirt nap one way or the other and I hope all I have to worry about someday are trips to the ortho and not the oncologist, cardiologist, urologist, etc…

Any and all advice that involves interacting with this guy is foolish. This guy wants attention. Don’t give him attention. The best way to piss him off is to say “Oh thanks” and then keep doing what you were doing anyway. Then, you are simply humoring him and ignoring him as you would any other elderly man that is telling you made up stories as a result of taking the wrong medication on the wrong day.

So you’re saying that someone seeking attention SHOULDNT be given attention…and then everybody will go about living their lives?

Are you sure you don’t mean that you need to corner him and demand 5 to 10 minutes of his time and demand he tell you if he ever does a 1 rep max, and demand he explain to you why what you were doing is wrong? Cause I thought bears’ advice was EXCELLENT!

Haha.

It’s funny. When I was 19, I thought everyone HAD to know I was right, and if people were wrong, I NEEDED to correct them. As I get older, I find that I care less if people choose to be stupid, and if stupid people don’t think I’m right, that’s usually a sign that I am.

Agree totally, no point in interacting with the old man at all. Just nodd, smile and say thanks and go about your business. If he keeps talking, ignore him and pretend he is not there. He will give up after a few minutes.

Good advice. With increased strength and age people don’t bother you. Until that point do your own thing , but do try to work on your form and strength. Eventually it’s a non issue.
Silo101 wrote:
Ok so I’m pretty damn pissed off right now. I just got back from gym, it was my squat day. So basicaly I was training singles in order to increase my max strength (Powerlifting, duh). My current 1 rep max squat is 170 kg (375 lb). So after succesfully completing this lift, I am feeling pretty good so I decide to try lifting 180 kg (397 lb).

So I get ready to lift and I see in the mirror this very big (admittedly) old (maybe 50) bodybuilder watchiing me. I’ve spoken to him before and he is a nice guy but a very pure bodybuilder, always recommending very slow lifts with lighter loads and never go below 6 reps kind of old fashioned thinking.

Cool, so what. I attempt the lift. I say attempt because yes, I failed. At the bottom of the squat I try but just can’t get it up so I sink very low and put the bar down on the side bars of the rack. Sigh, dissapointedly and stand up to start unloading the bar.

Then out of nowhere I hear this loud voice saying my name (literaly loud enough for the whole gym to hear). So I turn around and its the big guy. He starts telling me very loudly that I am going too heavy and I am going to fuck up my back. So I ask “Was there anything wrong with my form?”. So he replies, “No, but you are going too heavy. Rather take off all those plates so it’s just 60 kg (132 lb)and go very slowly. do that for 4 sets of 10 reps”.

This starts making me quite angry because litteraly the whole gym is watching (I go to quite a comercial pussy gym full of people who want to get “toned”). All everybody else sees is a youngster (I’m 19) being told off by someone who clearly knows what he is talking about. So I say “Im not training bodybuilding I am trying to powerlift to get stronger”.

He then becomes very agitated and starts ranting about how he fucked up his back when he was my age and how every time I squat heavy my discs are leaking fluid and how strength will come with muscle mass. I counter, “so you’re saying that every powerlifter in the world has a fucked up back.” (I must admit I thought I had him here). But, amazingly he replies, “yes. There have been no long term studies on the effects of this on people and look at how young powerlifters retire.”

I was amazed at this point and I see people all around me nodding their head in agreement and looking dissaprovingly at me. I end the arguement with “I don’t agree” and then leave. Have any of you encountered this kind of thing before? Is there any merit whatsovever in this guys arguement? Is it even possible to get strong doing only 10 rep sets???

Maybe I’m just ranting to de-stress but I would like to hear your guys thoughts on this. I don’t know if its relavent but here is my info:

19 years old
74 kg (163 lb)at 5’8
lifting for 2 years

Lifts - all 1 rep max
Squat: 170 kg (375 lb)
Dead: 195 kg (430 lb)
Bench: 130 kg (287 lb) (yea it sucks, I know, I’m working on it… tend to do much better with dumbells, 50 kg in each hand for 4 reps)

Shot guys
The truth is a lot of powerlifters do get hurt. Personally, i love increasing strength so i’m a hybrid powerlifter i guess lol I doubt i’ll ever get into PL gear.

Look at Tate, he has some fucked up looking pec’s and his shoulders are supposedly a wreak.

I grew up around a few competive PL’s they all had shoulder(s) and/or knee surgeries. The coach of these guys trained Joy Burt, i believe she still has some world records in female PLing.

Oh, and PL has one of the lowest injury ratings of any sport.
Compared to other forms of lifting?

i actually like these guys… and OK, now when I show up somewhere I look like someone who knows what hes doing so even if I really do something wrong, nobody is gonna tell me (also a problem)… but anyway…

i would just say “yeah, i’m trying to fuck up my back… but the fucker just wont break, and even gets stronger every time so I have to hit it harder, do you maybe have any tips on how to do it faster”

just say something to get him off your back… cause going into an argument wont help… NOT in this sport… NOT in this time… hell there is people still ready to argue with Lou Simmons, or somebody like that… isnt it just easier to accept there is a lot of different approaches that work…
