A Guy Died at the Gym Today

The way we teach it, you do 30 compressions and 2 breaths, though to children we do teach them to just do continuous compressions until help arrives. Other than that, I agree with the guy in the video. Tilt their head back and put your ear to the victims mouth, if he or she isn’t breathing, start compressions immediately. Right between the nipples, put your palm there and use your other hand to pull your fingers up slightly like the they were doing in the vid. Avoid leaning into it continuously, you have to let the pressure up between each “rep” or you will reduce the effectiveness. You want to pump about 100 times a minute.

Someone mentioned that CPR will almost always break ribs. Well if you are breaking ribs you are using too much force, and no, trained personnel does not crack a bunch of ribs when performing CPR. I don’t know where you got that. However if you DO crack the victims ribs while your at it, fuck it, just keep going.[/quote]

Trained responders often break ribs.

The Good Samaritan Law only applies if the responder acts within the bounds of his previous medical training.

Not true. It does not apply ONLY if the responder has previous medical training.

From Division 2.5 of the California Health and Safety Code:

1799.102. No person who in good faith, and not for compensation, renders emergency care at the scene of an emergency shall be liable for any civil damages resulting from any act or omission. The scene of an emergency shall not include emergency departments and other places where medical care is usually offered.

In some states the law/act only covers trained professionals and in some cases it specifically DOES NOT cover trained personnel (Oklahoma)

Most states laws cover untrained responders if they are acting in response to cardiac arrest.

How the fuck is the OP, or I for that matter, supposed to know? That shit ain’t common knowledge.

I guess when something like that happens we run to a PC, access the local gov’ts website, browse through the badly build state/local gov’t web-pages and find the information. Of course those who a have lawyer can just call and find out. [/quote]

Training encompasses the law as well as how to respond.

yeah I wouldn’t either. Places sell these little masks that you can use for CPR that come in a tiny little roll that attaches to you keychain. The best thing to do would be to get a first aid kit (cause the gym will have one) that has a pocket mask in it and use that.

[/quote]

same. if theres no mask and noone around that knows/is willing to give the breaths, you can bet your ass the person will more than likely only get chest compressions out of me.

When I was still an EMT in Washington state I cracked someone’s ribs. It’s called them being out of their 20s. Also it’s called actually compressing to keep blood flowing. It’s not a ‘form’ or a ‘force’ thing. It just sort of happens, and it’s not like I was literally beating the dude in the sternum.

Also I’d like to point out that sufficient and punctual stress does crazy things to people’s mental processes, and I’m not surprised at all that someone locked up instead of administrating logical, intelligent care to someone who needed it. The vast majority of the population is not exposed to that sort of occurrence on anywhere near a daily basis, ergo it’s somewhat harsh to assume that they’ll act in a way that makes sense.

In much the same way that I assume most people react illogically when, say, set on fire. I’m sure I wouldn’t deal with that particularly gracefully.

If you’re not trained in CPR and the person next to you alleges to be, it’d be hard to jump in and try to help if you really don’t know what you’re doing. That manager needs to be recertified in CPR. Must have been tough for you to experience that. I hope the guy is okay. [/quote]

Yep. I agree with this. It’s been about 10 years since I was certified (the gym I worked at made me get certified) and I don’t think I’d knock someone who claimed certification out of the way. Must have been a difficult thing to see.

Thanks to the guy who posted the that chest compression cpr vid

Good post. This is all you learn then you get certified. 30, 2, 30, 2, it’s as simple as that. If you see a guy dying, fucking do something. “I’m not certified” is no excuse.

I haven’t read through all the posts here, but assuming someone isn’t certified, yet has SOME basic knowledge for proceeding in such a situation, does he/she have any legal ground if things go wrong with the victim after you’ve administered the revival techniques (also assume no other bystander had any knowledge either, nor did they take any steps to save victim)?

it has been covered ID… its called the Good Samaritan Law/Act. The actually law/act is different from state to state so you’d have to check and see what your local protocol is BUT most states cover anyone who is not on duty as a medical practitioner that is giving aid in support of a cardiac arrest patient (heart attack)

I am also certified due to my job, and as I

Sorry Greg. I should have read thorough the thread.

Thanks for the info!

no problem man. Its a pretty weird situation because if you dont check there is no way of knowing what your states law says/covers. Some states have really weird laws that specifically state that they do not cover someone who has previous training. Definitely kinda shitty. That would make me not want to help anyone in that state (when those are the type of people that you would really want helping out in the first place)
