I have read that it SHOULD be easy to find an empty keg (for training) but I am finding that is not the case. None of the liquor stores around here seem to have them. I found a couple on Ebay, but they cost $40 and then I would have to pay an additional $40 to have them shipped to me. Surely, there is a cheaper solution.
Where have you guys found kegs or, for that matter, barrels for your training?
Go to your local grocery store. Order a keg of your favorite beer.
Plan party. Throw party. Charge 5-10/cup for keg beer. Collect the cash (you’ll probably make money on the deal), and sit back and watch the beer disappear.
Keep the keg, and eat the deposit cost.
Technically speaking kegs are property of the beverage company in almost all cases–just like those yellow crates from dairy farms (not the store’s property, the dairy co. property). Find you local AB or Miller/coors distribution company and give them a call if the party idea doesn’t suit you.

This is a great idea. Unfortunately, I am no longer in college and if I throw a party, my guests will expect me to foot the bill. Actually, I wouldn’t mind buying a keg and giving the beer away free, but, I want a 15 gallon keg. That amount of beer is bound to cost a bunch.

Do you think they’d have empty kegs? I will give it a try.

Depends on the beer. Prices here are relatively cheap as the stores know they can’t make a huge margin on kegs. I work at a liquor store, and we make next to nothing on kegs. A 1/2bbl (16 gallons) of a cheap macro brew like Bud Light runs about $85 + $30 deposit. Tappers are also rentals ($5 rental fee and a $45 deposit).
So it depends. If you’re having a big party for the whole neighborhood, it can end up being cheaper buying a big keg rather than buying can beer. There’s about 150 12oz cups in a 1/2bbl keg (you loose some to foam).

Its where you local stores get kegs from…and also where they send them back to when they’re used up. So, yes, they’ll have some. They will probably not just sell you one, though. Still worth a try.
Put an ad on craigslist saying you will pay 20 bucks.
I had a hard time until my friend gave me a couple (he is a bouncer) I than was at a friends house and saw a nice one in their backyard they let me have.
Where in CA are you? I might be able to find you one.
Seriously, just hit a college campus, I know friends that have them piled high in their back yards because for some kinds of beer they don’t buy back the shell.
Offer the kids like 20 bucks and I’ll bet they take it.
