It was just the 10 with the bar. I’m going to keep using those as warm ups and maybe add little bitty weights as I go.

(wimped out, should have taken my own advice and performed a full setup each time. Then it would have been strength not oxygen debt that stopped me. Live and learn?)

I was wondering about this. As I mentioned a while back, my maxes are close to yours, and I just started the 5-3-1 program myself. I didn’t do a full setup each time on my DLs, and as a result, stopped my last set due to oxygen debt after 7, when my form started sucking along with my lungs.

I really think that if I’d done full setups each time, I could’ve kept going.

I also have been playing with doing sumo-style DLs rather than the Romanian form I’ve been using. It definitely makes me feel better about my back and I’m able to maintain good posture throughout more than with the Romanian. I did my first two sets of 5 sumo-style, but did my last Romanian style, since I feel stronger that way.

I think next week I’ll do all sumo, with full setups after each.

This was a better ending to the day than had I given in to stress. I went to a routine eye exam anticipating new driving glasses. They take pictures of your retina as part of the exam and you know that when the doctor says “Uhoh, - that wasn’t there last year.” The news isn’t good. Turns out I have a bulge of the retina in my right eye that he needs to take a closer look at next week and I’m on restricted activity. Meaning - no impacts, running, mountain biking, martial arts. I’m going to bend that last one a bit since starting tomorrow is the 3 day seminar featuring the 8th dan from Japan, but I will limit what I do. Don’t want a detached retina - my cousin just went through that and he had to spend a month face down to try and let it heal. He ended up losing a good bit of vision in that eye. I have my next appt on Wednesday and the dr will dilate that eye to take a better look.

Sorry about the news from the eye doctor Soldog. Wishing the best for you with that. Congrats on the PRs that continue to fall for you.

That sucks SD, hang in there.

Hey, hope your eye peep is ok!

Congrats on the MP PR!

Sorry to hear about the eye. Man, it’s always something, eh? Good luck-- maybe it was just a piece of rice stuck in there or something.

A piece of rice? LOL!

I’m an optimist. (Obviously, not an optometrist)

Bad news about the eye, Sol, but you caught it in time. That’s the main thing.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the good thoughts everybody. I’ll hopefully find out more on Wednesday…

Been at a Wado seminar in Colorado Springs for the past three days. 8+ hours a day, 2 hours driving each way and dinner Saturday evening with the group - adds up to total body exhaustion and soreness. Hope I’m up for deads on Tuesday but if not Thursday will come around.

I’ve been thinking about you, always appreciate your input and thoughts. Hope your eye is ok.

The seminar sounds like it was pretty awesome. I’ve been to some Nishiyama seminars (though don’t look forward to any in the future, given he is dead the admission price is a bit steep now) and really enjoyed the way a long training session made me feel.

Keep posting on the 5-3-1 program and how it works for you.

And best wishes on that eye.

With a vengeance!

After a night without sleep, courtesy of my troubled teenage son, I find out at the eye doctors that I do indeed have a small tear in my retina. Laser surgery is scheduled for this afternoon. The only good thing about this is that the detachment is in an area of the retina not used for seeing.

Good luck with the surgery. Don’t blink, unless you want a hole in your eyelid!

There’s some goods news inside the bad - what’s the determination on intra-ocular pressure? Will you be able to lift while it heals or will you have to wait?

yikes! glad you went it right away with this and are getting it taken care of!!

good dl’s btw!!!

Overall that sounds like pretty good news. Prognosis on healing time?
