A Dog's 531 Journey

Thats a great trick Solodog. When going for a max are you pushing your feet through the floor?

I was trying to Chi-Town, I think my butt lifted off the bench though. I guess that’s a no-no. I may not have been pushing through the heels.

any suggestions?

Solodog, I’m no expert and my bench is pretty pathetic, but driving my feet into the ground has helped me push through my sticking point. I really don’t have an arch so keeping my butt planted is pretty easy. I try to set up where my feet are in a comfortable position, so as I push the feet don’t move.

Hope it helps.

Bike 1.5 mile w/u race to Salina 381.5 to go
Sumo 135x5, 185x5, 230x3
265x5, 300x3, 335x1 370x1 PR

I’m a little surprised that this went up at easily as it did. I started out starving and ended up ravenous. Haven’t been eating well and sleeping like shit for quite a while. I loaded 405 on the bar but pussyed out when tightened up during the rest. I’ll leave it for the meet.

This is +5 lb PR over March 12 when I did 365 but didn’t really lock it out.

Great work! That came up easy! I’d bet one of my nuts that you got 405 in ya, and likely more. What are you going to open with? Second lift?

Thanks jack! Another day when I’ve had more than 1000 kcals all day maybe.
After tonight, I think I’ll open 350-360 and maybe go for 385 on the second. But I’ll have to see how the day goes.

I think 355, 385, 405 would be a solid plan for a first meet.

that would be sweet! 1 to get on the board, 1 small PR and a last big PR

You given any thought to your meet openers?

Nicely done Solodog. Looking really strong!

Nice PR,
good bar speed, 405 is right there.

Your deads look great. I’ve only done two meets but I always opened with something I know I could get even if I had the flu. Just to get on the board like you said. Have you been wearing the singlet around the house? Has your wife asked you to wear it to bed?

I have been giving it some thought, but no decisions yet. I need to see how I feel after I get this move under my belt. Fortunately, the drive fell right during my deload week. But it will probably look very similar to my test week from last cycle.

I’ve been thinking about openers as well, even though I am not slated for a meet. What is the accepted wisdom for openers and lifts in general? Do people even plan out all 3 of there lifts prior to? or do they wing it once they are there and see how they feel?

My initial thought was, assuming a tested 1RM of say 215#, on bench, something like…
1st - 185#
2nd - 205# or 210#
3rd - 220# or 225#, depending on how you feel.

I have been reading up on this, and it sounds like you want your opener to be a weight you could hit for a triple with the flu, your second should be something that you consider respectable and probably not a PR, and your third a tie for a PR or better or a weight that you would need to win the competition or move up a spot, etc. Makes sense. Everyone seems to agree that missing your opener is really bad, and that shit happens that you don’t expect in meets, so make sure its a very safe weight.

I’m set on a 175 opener since I’m comfortable tripling it. second would be 195 or so depending and 3rd would be open depending on how it’s going

11/7/09 Indoor bike trainer +9 miles race to Salina 372.5 to go

Thanks, Jack. That sounds reasonable.

Looks like a good plan, soldog. Can’t wait for you to get there!

This is all correct. With my humble experience all sorts of shit can happen. Also, sometimes because of the kind of bar used (for instance the Q-Bar is much more rigid than your average home/gym bench bar), the type of plates (many feds use kilo plates, and 100lb plates move differently than 45s), always really lowball your opener.

For me, I have develope stage fright. Nothing like walking out to squat at 9 a.m. in a revealing singlet to see 100 people looking at you.

Lookin’ strong, soldog! I’m going to have to start thinking about picking up a singlet soon myself.

Sounds like you’ve got the plan down, though! You’ll do great.
