Why is everything “wild” now ?? The word has been beaten to death. Last one was “diabolical”… before that it was “narcissist”
That’s super interesting if legit. I’ll have to deep dive it after Christmas.
Pretty darn interesting. Maybe even wild. I’ve worked with Dr. Mike, so I trust his insights. It’s an older study, so maybe some follow-ups have been done.
Interesting, assuming then, that armed with this knowledge, high stress experiencing individuals can genuinely convince themselves that stress is actually genuinely beneficial and therefore harness it to be an actual benefit. Would love a follow up with the same cohort that informed them of the findings.
Sounds similar to something I heard a while back that willpower is limited, but only to those who believe it is, and that self limiting belief and non limited belief have profound real life implications.
Since the root cause of just about everything that’ll make us sick or kills us early is inflammation, I wonder if our perspectives of stress affect inflammation. Sort of like interpreting fear as excitement might alter cortisol production or the maybe the downstream effects of cortisol.
So, stress is awesome. It means you’re important and have a lot going on. It means life is exciting and challenging, and you’re up for it, dammit. You know who has no stress? Lazy, boring people who don’t do much and aren’t needed.
Let’s call that a weird form of affirmation. ![]()
Of course, some stress just sucks, like having a loved one pass away, but this study seemed to be focused on work stress and stuff like that.
Also reminds of the eustress/distress framework I had ChatGPT sum up:
Eustress
Good stress, the kind that sharpens focus, improves performance, and drives adaptation. Training stress, intellectual challenge, deadlines that push you to execute, cold exposure, etc. The key feature is that recovery is adequate, so the stress makes you better rather than worse.
Distress
Bad stress that overwhelms your capacity to adapt. Chronic sleep loss, financial anxiety, overtraining, unresolved inflammation, nonstop psychological pressure. Same stress pathways as eustress, but without sufficient recovery, so performance, mood, hormones, and health degrade over time.
Stress itself is not the enemy. Unrecovered stress is. The same stimulus can be eustress or distress depending on dose, timing, and recovery capacity. That applies just as much to lifting and dieting as it does to work and life.
Huberman has an episode (or has talked about, at least) the body’s protective mechanisms during stress, e.g. people were shot with norovirus and then either put under stress of some sort or not, and the stressed people didn’t get sick. Plus its performance enhancement under threat.
Ah, okay! I’ll trust it, too, then.
Was it your log I recently posted this to? If not, similar train of thought.
Random thought: it’s so much easier to post to TN than do my paperwork.
Such a study must be a swiss cheese of confounders.
And this is why I am on here SO much less. I am too easily sucked in and then get nothing else done!! I just have to cut myself off. lol
Platz lifting like a deranged madman.
Doesn’t look optimal or science based, he must not have achieved much in the way of physique ![]()
It’s really the only social media site I interact with.
It is nice to spout off random ideas when you’d rather be in the gym instead of working.
I was thinking about this interview with kneesovertoes guy when he said “tnation was his gate way to porn” but it’s wild that this ended up being the caption
Not making fun of the guy. Admitting to having a porn addiction is very admirable but cmon elitefts do better
This is cute as hell.
Im patiently waiting to eventually have a granddaughter.
Happy New Year T-Nation!
Stress accumulation over time is what ends up setting up 1st responders for an early death
Whose stress do you mean? The responders or the people they’re dealing with?
Both, actually. Stress breeds stress… and dealing with it as a career is detrimental. We feed off of each other.
True.
