A Cheerful Misanthrope

I picked up some slippers for deadlift at the store where I buy my daughter’s dance stuff. They were $12 and the woman there was pretty interested when I told her what they were for.

Looking at the picture of the squat shoes, the heel looks high but he said he can be up to 5cm.

Last Thursday evening I weighed myself at our coaches house and I weighed 130lbs. I guess my scale is 5lbs light. That was disappointing as hell.

I’m going to keep trying but I don’t think I can realistically drop 7 lbs in 5 weeks without it affecting me. He also said that if I were to drop weight, it would need to be closer to the competition, like a few days out.

Do you weigh yourself in the morning on an empty stomach? That could be the 5lb difference.

I had a coach telling me exactly what to do at my first meet. When to put wraps on, when to but my belt on, when to warm up for each lift. It was awesome. It made for a stress free meet.

You should be able to get at least 10lbs from the knee wraps. That should help you get the total you need to qualify.

Today’s workout was good as usual. It was only me and two of the guys but the mood was good and they were doing really well. I’m still loving every minute that I’m there.
Sounds like a great place to train:)

Yes and naked. Even so, my scale is light. I’m still going to shoot for it without starving myself. The weigh in is at 7:30 but I doubt they’ll let me go naked. If I hit 56, I could do 110 bench, 225 DL and 160 squat. It would be a walk. At least I think it would. Excluding bench, the others are relatively easy weights for me but I don’t know how I’ll be in a competition.

Unfortunately he won’t be at the meet. He’s a 7th Day Adventist so I need to be as mentally prepared as possible prior to it. I’m the type to ask a million questions and he loaned me videos of prior meets so I can at least see what they do, what the signals are etc.

A few of the guys will be there competing so they will be able to babysit to some degree.

I haven’t trained anywhere else so I really don’t know any better. However, at the moment it feels like there is no where else I’d rather be.

You just need to plan carefully the week before your meet. firebug gave me this link for making weight that I book mark for my next meet…

Thanks very much. That is great. I have already started the 1lb/week weight loss and have lost 3 lbs so far just by making a few changes and substitutions such as making protein drinks with water rather than milk. Right there is 250 cal/day.

Bill had mentioned the last minute water flush a few days before. So perhaps in combination I can make it work. In the next meet I would happily compete at 60kg. I just want to qualify for Provincials and give myself time to train in gear for those.

I had read that article with some interest when it came out and cringed at some of my diet. I love fruit. I replaced the nuts with a small peach which isn’t as bad as some. This is good because I love peaches and grapefruit. Of course I love the nuts too but they pack a lot of calories.

I have also cut some refined sugar. For the most part, my diet is quite good. I eat very little pre-made foods, sauces, dressing etc.

I haven’t actively tried to lose weight since high school so this is a new endeavor for me.

And socks to protect your shins. Actually the bar will slide nicely up the socks on your DL.

You will be able to weigh in naked. The two meets I did I weighed in wearing just my undies, no bra. You do what you need to do to help you make weight. And a lighter weight at weigh-in will mean a higher wilks… although it’s not wilks that qualifies you it’s the total.

Good luck in London! I wish I was lifting in it too but I’ll be in a better place (Italy!). Next year I’m there for sure.

I had no idea you could weigh in naked. Hopefully its’ private unless you want to ‘really’ bond with your team members. Although I’ve seen them in their underwear, I’m hesitant about debuting in mine.

I’ve been looking at the Wilks totals/scores on past meets. Do you know how they are arrived at? What formula is used?

Are you Canadian? Did you do any of the recent meets like the one in Ottawa?

No kidding about being in a better place. Italy is lovely.

You weigh in one person at a time in a private room. It’s just you and the person recording your weight (probably Marlene Moore). The women are usually weighed in first.

Yep I did Ottawa in July and I did Belle River in June. They were both so much fun. I lifted fully raw, no belt, no knee wraps, nothing but a loose singlet. I bought some knee wraps at the Ottawa meet and have ordered a belt and will start using more equipment next year. I’m going to enter the senior provincials but I’m going to be raw again so it’s more going to be for the experience than anything else.

For wilks, the formula is www.powerlifting.ca/wilks.html and there’s another link there for the calculator.

Where are the provincials being held for Ontario?
Were you in Ottawa in July? I went to support my club, I joined up 3 days before the registration deadline and was not able to register, it was full. I’m still hoping for another qualifier for the November provincials, in QC.

There is a guy in Winnipeg who will make you weightlifting shoes for $150, tax and shipping in. I got my adidas for $100 can. from E-Bay.
For when you wear out the Walmart specials, of course.

No, I wasn’t in Ottawa. I started training with this club the day after they held it.

I don’t think Provincials are scheduled yet. Our coach said he was thinking about our club hosting it. That would be pretty cool.

As far as shoes and stuff go, at the moment, I’m trying to do it as inexpensively as possible. I’m somewhat fiscally challenged. Maybe I can find a sponsor for my life

Last night I ordered a singlet and knee wraps from a site.

I am really enjoying training at the PL Club. It is exactly what I have been hungry for. I want a coach with experience to tell me what to do and how to do it. All I need to do is shut up, listen, and do as I’m told.

It’s also nice training with people aged 15 to 67. It’s an interesting mix. The gentleman who is 67 is competing in the Worlds Masters in September in Palm Springs. He’s another one I can learn from. Plus he said he envied my arch on bench.
I was reading your thread and it is really inspiring. With that said I was wondering if maybe you could point me in the right direction. I am about to finish school and I am tired of being, well, fat. I went from about 135 to 175 in the course of 7 months and am in desperated need of some help and direction. I just got my gym membership renewed and figured that was a good start. Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you so much!!!

I’m glad you found my log inspiring. I think we all inspire each other here.

A gym membership is probably a good place to start but have you thought about what you want to do there? Lifting heavy is what totally blows my skirts up so I’m not bored when I’m doing it and I look forward to training. It isn’t everyone’s cup tea though. If you can figure out what you like, you are more likely to do it. What I like about lifting is that you can constantly push harder and go farther. You never reach the end.

Have you started at the gym yet? Did you go before you started school? When I joined a gym, it was the first time ever and I was completely intimidated so I just had to feel my way around until I figured out what I like doing.

Are your goals at the moment mostly for weight loss? If so, I’m not much help there. I’m trying to shed a few lbs myself but it’s the first time since high school so I’m just learning.

That doesn’t sound very helpful when I read it. I hope it helped a bit

I struggled with squat tonight particulary on the 3 reps at 150. Bill said I’m not going fast enough down. I’ve been tentative because I’m trying to make depth by feel. On the single I went a lot faster. It wasn’t as deep as the others but I broke parallel and it was much easier.

I got my CPU card in the mail today and I’ve ordered my singlet and some knee wraps. I can hardly wait to get them.

I almost forgot. Saturday is the Woodstock strongman competition. I will be there with TNT and his gang of crazy rowers. Hopefully Micropower will be there as well but she has had a rib injury. I hope she can come just for company since she made the last one the really fun event that it was.

I have my camera ready with a new memory card and lots of batteries so I hope to get lots of pictures and videos. I’m also hoping not to get injured as Bill wasn’t too excited about me doing this.
