The squats were done in a pair of men’s construction boots for the raised heel. As sassy as I’m sure I looked, they helped.
Apparently I have good form but I’m used to squatting in front of a mirror so I have to learn proper depth by feel.
The most difficult part of this training session was how unpunishing it felt. I felt like I hadn’t done enough. I’m going to have to take some deep breaths and really readjust my mind set. The coach gave me a very good analogy when I mentioned the light weights. First he told me that all the other guys started the same way.
Then he said that increasing your max is like breaking down a door. You don’t start right next to the door. You move back and take a run at it. Starting light again is like the run at the door. When you break down that one, you go lighter again and make another run for it. The man has many years experience and this is why I’m there. I have to shut my brain up and listen.
Because we are training in a barn, I was treated to watching young men in their underpants squeezing into deadlift suits. Good times.
