A Beginner Workout for Women

Alright… I’m not a woman, but my girlfriend is. She use to do dance and some drum core stuff, but has let the exercise slide because she’s in her last year of college and it’s pretty intense. Anyways, she has expressed a desire to get into better shape.

Here is what she is hoping to achieve:

-Some fat loss. She isn’t fat by any means, but she isn’t as toned as she use to be

-Some firming of the muscles. She’s never weight trained before but would like to try it.

-All around better health. Better lungs, some flexibility etc.

-Eating a healthier and more complete diet… but not insanely strict.

-And then just the usual… abs, ass, and legs.

If there is anything anyone can point me towards that would be great. I have some lifting experience myself, but my goals are much different so I’m not going to pretend to know much about achieving the goals she’s interested in.

Thanks a lot for any help!

It the same goal as most beginners, some fat loss and some muscle building. The principles for training a woman is the same as for a man. Put her on a proper nutrition plan and a basic routine built around large compound lifts done with moderate intensity and use progressive increases in weight.

I’d suggest buying the New Rules of Lifting for Women. Should be able to find it at the local bookstore. Depending on your GF, it might save you a lot of headaches. You won’t have to have the “You have to try lifting more than 5 lbs. I know you’re a lot stronger than that - we just moved a heavy-ass dresser” or “You really don’t have to do an hour on the eliptical” arguments.

What’s wrong with an hour on the elliptical?

I agree, if you can afford it, go for the New Rules of Lifting for Women book. Failing that, check out the MWA forum, some of Jen Heath’s stuff is aimed and newbies.

If we could put signatures on this forum, the above quote would be mine for a few days

There are some good suggestions in the Laura-Lightning thread.

Make that:

It’s the muscle building equivalent of vomiting.
