81' Mr O.

Why is there ZERO photos or film of this bodybuilding competition? Anyone?

Danny Padilla was most likely the REAL winner. But fucking Weider and Arnold had Franco in their back pockets for that night. Read all about it.

Yup. That Mr. O was also controversial, so the people in charge just kept it in secrecy.

‘Him’? You don’t know who Franco Columbu is? There’s plenty of photos and film on the guy.

It’s Mr. O 1982, that’s not getting much attention. Chris Dickerson was the first bodybuilder with serious back development, before Haney.

Thats a argueable point in re to back development, Bertil Fox and Sergio Oliva had pretty awesome backs.

That’s true. But what I’m talking about is that Dickerson and Haney changed the standard for back thickness. Backs were not nearly as thick before the eighties. Not that nobody could do it, it just wasn’t ‘discovered’ as a trend back then.

Wow, Danny Padilla! If anyone’s ever read Rick Wayne’s ‘Muscle Wars’, he talks about that contest. He mentions how just before they gave the contest to Columbu, Joe Weider walked out of the audience stating ‘I want no part of this’ -lol

S

Franco had noticable gyno on his right pec and his left leg was noticably smaller than his right from the bad break he suffered during the WSM competition. As much as I am a huge fan of his he shoulda never won this competition.

For me the ‘real’ winner of the 81 Olympia was Tom Platz, he had brough his upper body up to an amazing standard, on a par with his legs. Followed closely by Padilla who was just awsome.

I’ve seen some pictures of the line up for this contest I’ll try and find them.

Lance Dreher, (sp?)

This Mr. O will always be in debate. I dont think you can say who would win b/c Zane, Mentzer and Oliva all boycoted the event b/c Arnold won the year b4 and they new that it was going to handed to Calumbu

all of the olympia’s are controversial, because it is such a subjective sport. But also very much so fixed. 1980 belonged to mentzer. There is an article I’ll try to find on bodybuilding.com where they interviewed Boyer Coe he talked about this contest and the 81’ quite a bit.

Yes, please find it, TNT! I’d like to hear more truth on those contests.

Thanks

Agree but I dont think the '80 is in question as much as '81 is. Arnold was in 3rd at the end of the day and that night he made up the 3 points or so. Even he says he didnt look that good in the day. I heard a interview with Zane where he said the same thing.

here it is, Boyer describes it in detail along with Zane’s reaction to the contest. He speaks about the 72’, 80’ and 81’ contests.

That was a really good read. I never new that Zane smashed his trophy. There was an interview with him where he talked about the accedent he had nad wasnt going to compete in the '80 Mr. O b/c he was 10 or 20 lbs under weight but Arnold talked him into it.

I almost dont want to say it b/c my credit cards might stop working and Ill have men in black suites out side my house but as much as the Weiders have done for Pro Bodybuilding have they done more to hold it back and hinder it? Would we be better off if the IFBB would just go away?

then there wouldn’t be bodybuilding. Nothing will change, Shawn Ray talks some good sense on the subject also. But maybe its still around right now because of how the sport is. The controversy just fuels more fans. It’s not like we discuss the great competetions because there are no points involved, and no truly athletic things involved. Just the human body, . The controversy is neccassary to keep the sport alive.

But by not letting their ppl compete in other organizations is that not keeping the sport from growing and expanding? NFL players can compete in other “lesser” leagues as well as the NBA. And MLB and NASCAR are built on the minor leagues. The IFBB has no competition and competition is what made the NFL and the NBA what they are. Would it not help full the sport if they had an “AFL” or “ABA” now to compete against and take the sport more “mine stream” if you will.

I know that most of us are against the “main stream” but the sport needs something injected into it b/c its not what it was in 70’s 80’s or even the 90’s. I would like to see more than just Mr.O televised on tv. Something needs to change, I know that most ppl would like to see it get away from the swollen unnatural look of todays Mr.O. I admire Todays BBs but who really wants to look like that?

they did it to protect their star child Arnold. As much as I hate it bodybuilding is nothing without Arnold. We are all followers in the Sport that Arnold built. Sure he had promoters, and without his competetors he wouldn’t have been a bodybuilder. But people loved Arnold and he was a bodybuilder. From researching the sport Arnold, Frank Zane, Sergio Olivia and Ronnie Coleman have added the most popularity to the sport. The sport will need to become much more organized. Judges will need to be proffesionally checked and trained. And natural contests will have to become the call of the day. If the sport is to see what will be a terbulate era for all people and sports in the decade to come.

Well said. I would Like to see Dexter Jackson win the O this year but I dont think it will happen. In what? 40+ years there have been…11 different MR.O’s something like that? Sense the inception of the Arnold Classic there have been like 23 different winners(give or take)
