with all the nintendo and b-movie talk, i started thinkin about all the great music from that era and wanted to know [and post]the top bands [performers] from the 80’s.
heres mine [in no order]:guns&roses, erik b and rakim, madonna, janet jackson, faith no more, public enemy, chili peppers, inxs, henry rollins[black flag],living colour, edie brickell…
theres quite a few more, but i’m operating on about an hrs worth of sleep, so i’ma haveto get back to it.
i’d like to see where people go with this. peace, flash
we built this city on rock and roll
Huey Lewis, Rush, Yes (an old band that was just wrapping up in the '80s), Peter Gabriel (post Genesis), Pink Floyd (I like their '80s stuff best)…
And then there are all the hair bands…
Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Poison, Skid
Row, Motley Crue
Last week I acutally saw Skid Row,
Vince Niel (Motley Crue), and Poison in
concert. It was awesome.
Except Vince pretty much blew my
hearing out with his chipmunk on helium
voice.
Bon Jovi still rocks, not quite as hard as back in the 80’s though.
So true, Genesis with PG was great. But I was trying to stay on topic.
Motley Crue, Ozzy (Remember when he was the devil? Now he’s a clueless sitcom dad)Skid Row, Aerosmith made their big comeback in the 80s. Def Leppard. And then the list gets weird. Anyone remember Wham? Duran Duran? How about Quiet Riot? Twisted Sister? And Bruce Springsteens return to prominence. God, music in the 80s was fun, then Kurt Cobain turned it all into mindless self-loathing misanthropy. I still haven’t forgiven him for that.
I’m sooooooo happy to see Def Leppard on a couple people’s list. They’re my favorite band and have been since Hysteria (I’m 22). I saw them in concert in Toronto, Aug 12th…10th row baby! It was fuckin’ wild!
As for other bands, Poison, G&R, Bon Jovi, KISS, Twisted Sister, Cinderella, Motley Crue, and the list goes on!
Reading this thread, I just had to mention a couple of concerts that are coming to my city next month. On Sept. 10th Poison and Veil Neil going to be playing on the same show, then on the 13th Def Leppard and a “special guest” are in town. I might go see Poison (not one of my favorites, but concerts don’t come here that often), but on the 13th I will be far too busy watching the De la Hoya/Mosley rematch on PPV.
Oh yeah, and best 80’s band: G’N’R man!!!
Most of these years were all heavy metal for me:
Accept
S.O.D.
Anthrax
Iron Maiden
AC-DC
OZZY
Metal Church
Exodus
Twisted Sister
Ratt
Rush
I don’t really listen to these bands anymore but those were some kick ass daze…

guns n’ roses
Kiss-later years
RUN DMC
NWA
Megadeath

Misfits
My favorite 80’s band is Winger. Sure, they caught a lot of flak for their looks and being a “hair band,” but musically, they were a notch above the other bands. When I started playing guitar I stumbled upon “Headed for a Heartbreak” and realized what a great song it was musically. Everyone who plays music should listen to their “Pull” album. It will change your perception of Winger.
I also am a big Whitesnake, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi fan.
80’s music was also the last time MTV played music videos.
Bruce Hornsby, The Police/Sting, U2, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Huey Louis, Hall and Oats…that’s all that comes to mind at the moment.
The 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s set a musical standard that no future genres could ever surpass.
“We Are The Champion” is an all time 80’s song. I liked 80’s Metal and rock and roll myself.
Mettalica, Iron Madien, Megadeath, Slayer,Motley Crue, G-N-R, Twisted Sister, Def Leapord, Genisis.
I also listen to some hip hop/ rap.
Slick Rick, RUNDMC, ICE-T, The DOC, Public Enemy, and Del La Soul
come on you guys how could you forget “new kids on the block,” and “vanilla ice?”
or maybe ice was in the early 90’s. either way he deserves an honorable mention.
Weapon X has all my fav’s taken care of.
Dougie Fresh, Too Short, Tone Loc, U2 as honorable mention.
SKman go see Poison for sure. They rocked hard, lots of pyro, and there were these 15 foot flames…
For Rap music don’t forget DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, LL Cool J, Maestro Fresh Wes, and Bel Biv Devo.
Two words: Van Halen.
ok, you all pretty much hit the best 80’s music on the dot…pretty much all of what you mentioned i realy liked…there was some good hip hop r&b in that time period too just can’t think of any right now…
DAMICI! Where have you been?
