5/3/1 1RM Increases

Is it absolutely necessary to only increase 1RM weight only by 5 and 10 pounds every mesocycle?

I would stick with what Wendler has outlined. It seems excruciatingly slow, however, you have to think long game, dude. The key to success with this program is focusing on where you want to be a year from now, not six months.

Smash it.

stick with the small jumps and focus on getting rep PRs

No it’s not absolutely necessary, but when you get stuck in the 3rd cycle and are frustrated you’ll wish you did.

You’ll still get strong doing small increases, just crush and rep out the last set. What’s the rush?

I don’t understand why people take what an expert says and then want to change it due to impatience and ego. Find your 1 true on rep max today and base it off of that.

The program sets you up for success by building your confidence because you’ll be setting repetition personal records. I don’t see the problem.

I just finished my third cycle and the weights are starting to get heavier.

Oh and its not RM but training max (i.e. the weight you use to work out the weight to use) in a sense the RM doesn’t really matter until you test it.

And what increases were you planning on exactly?

Sorry Boffin, I didn’t explain that through. In detail, I meant find your one rep max then multiply by 90% and train off that. The “work off that” meant calculating the 90% my bad.

The general rule is “if you have to ask…” NO

But of course it can be done and just depends on you and if you know what you’re doing…

Well, if you just add the increase (5/10lb) to the previous cycle’s weights you’ll have a close approximation AND you won’t end up with weights like 201.259 lb

I’m wondering the same thing cause I started 5/3/1 last week but if I feel like I can get good lifts with the extra 5-10 then go for it

bad idea, the high rep lifting actually translates far better to 1 RM increases in my experience

This…especially for the upper body movements.

Stick with the program. If you feel you can do more, then do more reps on your last working set.

I add 5lbs a month and have found a great success with it. I’ve made some pretty decent jumps, go for it.
