405lbs Raw Bench Thread

I hit 180kg (396lbs) today… so close!

I haven’t done anything fancy yet, I still just do heavy doubles or singles and push for a new PR each session. Progress is becoming slower though, so I’ll most likely try out a proper program such as 5/3/1 soon.

How’s everyone doing in the chase for 405?

I’m closing in, as I have hit a gym lift of 390. I have gone through 2 waves of 5/3/1 and am gearing up for my first powerlifting meet on May 2nd. Throwing a good pause in there has definately dropped the weight some but I’m still gunning for 405.
Howd the 5/3/1 program work for your bench?

I’m doin pretty good. I want to hit the 405 at 202BW so it’s double bodyweight. And then after that I’m plannin on bulkin to a 225 and want to just kill the bench and go for 430-440 and just really drive up the weights.

I’ve been addin 5lbs every week. I’m at 380 right now. I should b hittin 405 in less than 8 weeks. Pretty pumped! I’ve gotta do it while I’m still a teen so I can tell my kids that I did it as a teen haha

I just found this thread recently but have been in the chase for 405 since I started lifting at age 14. I hit it yesterday and it was surreal. I had been smashing through my plateaus once I started using 315 for my first set instead of 275 and hitting heavy triples and doubles. The workout went 315x8, 345x6. I save on my first two sets to keep energy for my triples and doubles. I hit 365 for a triple and put on 385 after. 385 went up so easy I decided to just try out 405.

I don’t train for powerlifting so I honestly don’t know how legit it is. After my set with 345 I have my younger brother spot by putting his index fingers under the bar and follow it. I’m not entirely sure if I should claim that my bench is 405 or not. Good luck to everyone attempting to hit four plates.

I usually shoot for more then 10 reps of any movement due to fear of injury. I don’t pause at the bottom, and stop 2" off my chest before pressing back to the top due to pain in the rear of my shoulders. I usually get 8 reps for 405 up on an average day. My best was 405 for 13. I felt like a beast that day…

I’ve been stuck at this weight/reps for a while, but I don’t feel the need to go higher seeing as how I lift for both strength and bodybuilding. it’s easy to manipulate light weight to feel heavy and establish new growth… My typical flat bench on chest day…

135 x 40 BB Bench warm up…
225 x 15
315 x 15
405 x 8 or more - working set
405 x 8 or more - working set
225 x till failure - slow and strict to bring the pain…

It felt great, I will find out tomorrow when I test for a new max. Though switching up to pauses on the chest will make comparisons difficult at best.

im gettin fuckin pumped…gettin close to 405!!!

Get it done man! Good luck!!!

Sadly over here I dunno if Ill be able to get it before football season I guess I’ll see after my strength phase how close I am if not then after the season is over for sure! Arghhh I want to do it so bad! I feel like its so beastly especially at my size and age!

You be the judge. I used my cell phone to provide proof of the 405 Raw. It was a pause, then press. Although it looked as if my butt came off the seat, my butt did remain firm.

Looks pretty clean to me. Hard to tell from that angle though.

I didn’t see anything wrong, not at all. I trust him on the ass thing. Nice long pause too. That was serious legitness. Good job.

just found this! 405 is my goal for this year…my pr is 355…strictly gym no comps for me…im leaning more towards 5/3/1 it seems like a very successful program

22 years old
5’7" 210-215 lbs
405 bench 01/14/10 (raw)
555 squat 01/07/10 (raw)
525 dead sometime early january (raw)

these were my best numbers ever…put up early this month…ive done some tapering and changed to a body part split to gain back some size lost by peaking/lower volume. so im sure my maxes arent this high as of today but pretty close… ill take a near 1500 total seeing how when i was a powerlifter in highschool my total was under 1000  let me know what yall think!

Given all of the great races going on in the Strength Sports thread, I thought I’d start one up for those of us chasing the elusive 4-plates-per-side on raw bench.

I’m currently sitting at a max of 350, which I first hit the summer before last. Unfortunately I messed up my shoulder getting there, but now I’m finally healthy and making some good gains. I expect to beat 350 the next time I max raw, which will be a couple weeks after the holidays.

My partner and I have been trying out a new cycle, which has been working great. We switch up our ME exercises every three weeks in the order: floor press, decline bench, flat bench.

We change up our supplemental exercises every three weeks as well, using these to mix up our total workout volume. We only do one true bench workout per week, but we also do three sets of high-rep flat bench once per week during the weeks when we aren’t using flat bench as our ME lift.

Here’s my last ME day. The last lift is a 15lb PR for dec bench:

ME Dec Bench
(lots of warmups)
275x7
295x5
315x4
335x3
365x1*

Flat DB Bench
80x15
90x12
95x9
my suggestion on hitting 1RM…you are doing too much on warmups…do the bar to get your form…then 135 x 5, 225 x 3, 275 x 1, 315 x 1, 335 x 1…then start going for P.Rs…all my top PR’s have been gotten by doing it this way…think about it

Hey Dave you could claim 4 x (20kg) plates per side!
