Been looking into Starting Strength and Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1 BBB , and would like some opinions on these programs. My current stats are
- 200lb Bench
- 225 ATG Squat
- 335 Deadlift (Sumo)
Also , i am interested in increasing my size , and would like opinions on this topic towards these programs as well , as im well aware that strength and size are pretty much hand in hand.
I didn’t think SS was 5x5?
Do the program that appeals to you - I’ve learnt SS gives the illusion of faster progress, that may excite you enough to get you on that program.
yea i completely forgot that it was a 3x5 , sorry for the confusion.
Mark Rippetoe tells people to eat like pigs and drink a gallon of mil every day and stuff like that, a lot of people turn into fat slobs after a few months of SS. Yes, you need to eat to gain mass but too much is too much, you also need sufficient volume for hypertrophy and 3x5 is not a lot. I would go with 5/3/1 and do 5’s progression instead of AMRAP sets.

Both my workout partner and I have seen some pretty good gains on SS. We both started out really weak but we have both gone up about 2 plates on our Squats since December. He has gained 10 lbs and I have lost 20 lbs.
Now, I do walk 3 miles a few times a week and I’ve started boxing again but that was in the last week or so (the boxing). I’m a fan of SS… So, I would recommend that.
If you need to gain weight I would have you squat as follows:
Monday - 3 x 5 ascending, a drop set of 8, and a drop set of 15
Wednesday - Light 3 x 15
Friday - 3 x 8 - 12
Remember hypertrophy = bodybuilding. When you can squat 405, then you’re ready for a mass gaining program. Train mass for 4 months, then strength for 4 months. Save the real power work before meets.
If I had to start over again this is what I would do. It takes a long time but when your young the time is there.
I have been doing 5/3/1 BBB for 2 months and all I can say is that Im looking bigger and stronger than ever. If you stick with it and eat properly its amazing
