28 Days - Velocity Diet Journal

Good luck on the V-Diet. I’m looking forward to hearing how much weight you were able to lose after the 4 weeks. If I see enough testimony regarding decent weight loss from this diet, i’m definitely giving it a try in the future. The simplicity of it is what got my attention in the first place; it would only take literally 10 minutes to both prepare and eat each meal. That rocks!

Good start, stay with it. In my opinion it is worth the effort. It is an effort, but if you are tired of being tired and a FB then you can really accompish something for yourself. I was on the diet for 5 weeks this summer, lost 28 pounds, cholestrol went from 210 to 147, pants down from a snug 38 to a easy 36. 48 years old by the calender, much younger in my head.

Gained a few pounds over the holidays but I’m getting ready to kick it in the head. It is a battle at times, keep you head straight, keep exercising and follow the plan. My Best, WD

Thanks for the encouragement! This diet is incredible… It is all in your mind… as the Dream Theater song goes “Find all you need in your mind If you take the time.”
Lyrics to that song HIGHLY recommended, can be found at:

Day 5

H.O.L.Y. S.H.I.T.

WOW. I just had the most INTENSE workout!
My energy levels are way back up!
Last workout I was complaining of lack of strength. Today the volume was cranked to 11! I ended up working out at 10:15 tonight, which is later than I normally ever work out. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it. Only down side is that all I will have before going to sleep will be my other half serving of Surge.

Before working out I looked at myself in the mirror and noticed the stomach looks a little tighter, the arms a little more defined… it was a wonderful feeling.

I started out with chin-ups and was able to make a small increase in weight from before the diet! No doubt because I’m a few pounds lighter, but that did not make me feel any less fantastic. The lunges at the end were brutal. I reveled in the pain. Hell, I wanted more.

I was so “in the zone” tonight, it was almost like watching another person. And the whole time, my mind was filled with positive self talk. I am really making it happen - I am accomplishing my goals - and it’s happening right before my very eyes. I deserve this, I work hard. I am doing what it takes.

And so much thanks to Chris Shugart. He should keep his head up high because he is improving so many people’s quality of life. So many of us owe him so much.

Walking out of the gym today I was practically beside myself, full of life and energy and never wanting that feeling to ever leave. And I knew then that I will reach my goals, and I have what it takes. Hell, if the V Diet said I had to grind up bicycle tires for my fiber, I’d do it!

Anyone on this diet - it can really change your life. Hold on. It is so, so worth it.

Dream on, rock on, and make it happen.

Workout tonight: Waterbury Method
Chin-ups 10x3
A1 Decline BB bench press 4x6
A2 Standing hammer curls 4x6
B1 Machine calf press 4x6
B2 Lying leg curls 4x6
Lunges

Another note: sleep last night finally showed a big improvement.

Thanks man, encouragement is always nice! Just check this thread, I am definitely keeping things rolling! As far as “meals”, (haha) 10 minutes is actually a bit of a stretch!

 Day 6

Treadmill 60 minutes at 3.5 MPH

Tomorrow is the last day of Week 1 - time for my first solid meal.

The plan is for two very well-done lean-beef burgers on the Foreman Grill, along with some broccoli and cauliflower, at lunch time.

I wonder though - if I can swing it, is it actually better to skip this solid food meal? Would it make my progress even better? Or is it important as part of the diet?

Waterbury said in his Velocity Diet II article that to make up for the higher calories in his solid meal, he skipped some shakes. But this meal will probably be equivalent to 3 shakes!

The solid meal is crucial to part of the V-Diet. It shouldn’t be skipped. Re-check Shugart’s article.

Not to flame or anything, but how come you are doing this type of diet?

You do not have a large amount of body fat to shed.

I second what HJLau75 said – keep the solid meal. Psychologically, I found it to be a great help.

What you have to be careful of is not to panic when you step on the scale the next day and see your weight creep back up again. It’ll go back down and you’ll continue to lose the weight.

Sort of true, although I’m only 5’7. I started at 18.8% body fat, and while I may not have a lot of weight to lose…

  1. I would look and feel better without the gut, which I’ve wanted to lose forever.

  2. It is healthy to get rid of abdominal fat, it is linked to many diseases.

  3. It’s healthier to get body fat down before trying to build a lot of mass, which is what I plan to do once I am slim.

  4. Big psychological factor at play for me - I feel that the “gut” is something I want to get rid of because it is a ‘souvenir’ from my previous life(style) where I was very, very out of shape (used to be almost 50 pounds heavier) and sedentary (as well as not being strong emotionally etc), as well as what’s left from an eating disorder which I had, February 20 will mark my one-year anniversary from the last episode of binge eating disorder. And this does not reflect who I have become - it’s time for my physical condition to reflect my inner condition. Strong inside, strong outside.

End of speech…
Tomorrow: Beef burgers, broccoli, cauliflower

“If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
-Winston Churchill

I agree with the above recommendations. My Saturday night meal was always a date with my wife, something to look forward to, and allow me to stay in control.
This diet is alot like other things in life,
“Sometimes you just gotta hit it with a sledgehammer”
“ya gotta make shit happen sometimes”

My thanks to Chris Shugart for sharing th V-Diet with all of us and Dan John for his excellent motivational experience with it. WD

Day 7: Results are in for week 1…

Weight 149.2
Body fat 17.1%

Progress:
Total weight from 156.1 to 149.2 (-6.9 pounds)
Body fat from 18.8% to 17.1% (-1.7%)
Fat mass from 29.35 to 25.5 (-3.85 pounds)
Fat-free mass from 126.75 to 123.69 (-3.06 pounds)

Photos taken this morning:

It seemed that I lost some muscle, but the bioelectrical impedance scale I am using is not necessarily accurate. Chris says that it would be near impossible to lose muscle mass like that in a week. I think he is right, as I don’t think my strength has been decreasing by anything significant. I am going to continue on track and I’ll see what the numbers say next week!

And one more.

Nice going. I can see the difference.

Also, here’s something Shugart wrote about keeping the solid meal for the diet (I know you said you would but this explains it a bit better).

"The one healthy solid meal per week acts to retrain food behaviors and taste buds. You look forward to the solid healthy foods and begin to change your cravings. After 4 weeks, these changes become permanent for most people.

As a bonus, you get a good dose of healthy nutrients that you could be missing during the week.

I’d keep the solid meal in the plan."

He’s not kidding about the retraining food behavior. My one solid meal for the week was during Christmas day when I went out to dinner with my parents at a buffet at a local Marriott hotel.

The meat they were serving had a good amount of fat in it and didn’t have much for veggie choices. I think I normally would’ve noticed the fat content and not thought much about it , but being on this diet again has really made me aware of what I’m putting in my mouth, and I couldn’t believe I was eating that. I ended up eating a bunch of roast beef strips which didn’t have any fat chunks.

The diet also made me appreciate the flavor/texture of the one meal a week which made it much more enjoyable.

Let us know what your thoughts are after the meal today.

First meal(!):

Foreman-grilled extra-lean ground beef burger (~9 oz)
Large plate of broccoli and cauliflower with red-hot pepper sauce
1 liter Crystal Lite equivalent powdered drink

Was almost like a sort of ritual - made a burger for my roommate as well, who originally told me that “All you gotta do is keep your shit together and run for the goal.” My actions are even having an effect on his eating patterns, and he’s been asking lots of questions about nutrition, etc

The flavor was very intense - I never tasted so much flavor in these foods, which have been staples in my diet for quite some time. The food tasted very rich, and it felt good after - felt kind of full, but no cravings to continue eating or to eat junk!

And even more surprising, since this was after my NEPA hour-long walk which I did outside in the park, with fair amount of hills, steps, etc - I don’t think this would usually have filled me up as much!

Going to skip remaining fish oil today (plenty of fat in the burger) and half the next shake.

Day 8

Some grogginess and cravings today, but toughed it out.
Drank some green tea and downed a Spike and some BCAA.

Got a great energy rush in the gym, workout was productive.

BB back squat 10x3
A1 Dip 4x6
A2 Bent-over BB row 4x6
B1 Close-grip bench press 4x6
B2 BB preacher curl 4x6
Reverse crunch 5x6

Doing the preacher curls, the veins in my forearm were quite visible - pretty cool! I guess it’s the decreasing body fat.. awesome! It’s very encouraging to see actual results, keeps motivation high! And hell, I’m only starting week 2! I can’t wait to see the end result…

Wow! Congrats on your success so far. I’m currently talking to 2 guys who are on the diet. 1, we’ll call him D1, I’ve known for over a year and I am so amazed at what he can do with his body! I can’t seem to get him to come out here and talk to you guys but he’s out here daily reading & living this stuff. The pictures I received from him a few wks ago were amazing!!! He is ripped from head to toe and could easily be in a magazine!!! He said it was tough but worth every ounce of effort he put into it and he’s ripped from head to toe!!! Ill ask him if I can send u a b4 and after pic just for motivational purposes. You’ll be blown away!!

D2 is doing fantastic on the diet and has dropped a significant amount of weight. he’s 59yo and has a better body than most 30yos!! Like you, he loves the simplicity.

Keep up your efforts! Hearing your enthusiasm about the diet, combined with knowing the success of these 2 guys personally has me wanting to do this now.

You will defenitely be the one to watch!!!

Congrats on overcoming the purging. You sound as if you have made yourself into a new man!!!

It’s always uplifting to see people take control of their situation and make changes for the better. Congrats to your friends and best of luck! It’s great that we have a community here of like-minded individuals who eat live and breathe this stuff! Although the best motivation comes from within, and from seeing yourself achieve results, other peoples’ photos are also inspiring!

Something like 45 pounds. This is me, end of freshman year. Now at the end of my senior year. Didn’t know anything at the time - spent months running on the treadmill and eating very little. Coulda used the V-Diet then! haha,.
