The story:

I’m an all or nothing kind of guy… and I’ve spent the last 2 years away from the gym, fully dedicated to school and work. My diet was horrible, and up until a month ago, I was weighing in at 245 – eliminating the junk food has taken the toll of an average of 13 pounds on my “army of fat”.

I wrestled during high-school, at 135, 152, 171 as I started growing mature muscle over the years. Then, once school was coming close to an end, I got involved with the Naval Reserves. I was training with pretty hardcore strongman style regiments with the support of SEAL motivator Kory Knowles and the group of guys who showed up to workouts.

Over the course of about 6 months my legs exploded… I was in the best condition of my life. I could run, swim, and lift unlike anyone for my age and size. I didn’t set any records in the gym (though my swim times were amazing), I never had any trouble with strength gains and weight. I’d have to say my physical success at the time is due to my caveman like genetics… who knows?

But that was then, and you can see me now: I’ve become a pathetic lump. I’ve been rationalizing for two years… and letting my health suffer as a result. I just kept on sucking in and buttoning my pants like it was no big deal. I was doing laundry the other day and noticed how ridiculously reinforced my buttons were when I had to sow them back on.

Enough is enough! I’m fat… I’ll be the first to admit it, but that just makes more success easier. I expect to lose alot of fat in the next 28 days… I would with or without the V-Diet training the way I used to. But I come here to rely on the expert opinion and support of the men and women who have proven themselves far more knowledgeable than myself in this field.

I’m putting myself and my goals on these forums as a sign of commitment and accountability.

But I’m done talking… you can see my pictures, and I’ll be updating this as often as possible with workouts and physique changes and my diet. I will be following the V-Diet 100%… I see no point in modifying the hard work Chris Shugart has put into developing and tweaking.

I wanted to start on Sunday to be “even” with the calculator… except thats rationalizing. I have my Biotest products on hand already… the shipping was extremely fast. I already started this morning.

If you have any words of caution, or advice, or notice I’m doing something well or poorly. By all means make it known!

Chris Shugart, if you read this, your words are pure gold to me (and golds at over $900 an oz currently). I offer muchas gracias for all your hard work. Your articles and research have inspired me to take control of my situation, especially Gus’s physique clinic… awesome work and thanks to you too!

So, here goes…

Updated 6:22PM:

A1. Shoulder Press Lunges (45x4, 50x4, 45x4)
A2. Dumbbell Hang Clean (45x4, 45x4, 45x4)
A3. Bent Over Single Arm Row (45x6, 45x8, 45x6)

B1. Close Grip Bench Press (145x8, 145x8, 145x8)
B2. Wide Grip Bench Press (145x8, 145x8, 145x8)
B3. Front Squats (I gassed out and about passed out after attempting the first set… I racked it after two squats and somehow managed to get my ass seated without breaking arms / tail bone on the way down)

I was pretty disappointed in my performance tonight. Granted, I haven’t been to the gym in months. I wasn’t struggling at all with the weight and form… but my stabilizing muscles are all but extinct this long out of the gym… so while I could have potentially done significantly more weight, it would have appeared I had Parkinson’s disease and I don’t consider that good form. I’m looking forward to see how much better this gets the next few gym visits. Go-go muscle memory!

Also… I’ve always had far larger and stronger legs than my peers. I hope I don’t sound like I’m making excuses… thats not my intent. I just couldn’t do it… I usually have this issue when I get back in the gym after some time off. But I’ve never come close to passing out after 3 sets of weighted lunges and then 2 squats. It’s usually just severe nausea, and my wrestling coaches thought that was an indication of a good leg workout. Thoughts?

Good luck Joel, you look to have a lot of potential. Can’t wait to see pics 28 days from now.

Tear it up!

I lost 10 lbs despite only sticking to the diet for three weeks, I’m also 50 lbs. less than you. Aim for losing at least 20 lbs. Make it happen.

Great potential here. Keep us posted.

the flight of the pheonix

Good luck man, I’ll be watching your progress. Today is my 10th day on the diet and it’s awesome! Down 8 lbs already. I started around the same weight and same build as you, so this should be fun to see.

yeah buddy! light weight!

Good to see somebody else do this. I’m doing Rippetoe right now because I’m a huge pussy in the big exercises and then after I stall (and save some money up) I’ll be going on this diet. I’ve followed Gus’s progress and it obviously works.

It’s also cool to see Chris post in here and give words of encouragement.

Starting up your own thread for this is motivation because if you fail then we all know that you did and you will be severely embarrassed. Don’t give into temptations!!! Get the rubberband like Chris says and snap it anytime you have a negative thought or temptation.

4:00 PM: 2x HOT-ROX Extreme

5:30 PM: I finished my workout described above and put down a Surge. It was weird how quickly I started to feel normal after a lactic overload and the nausea went away. Despite not being a fan of the original Surge flavor, I certainly realize its effectiveness. I definitely plan on drinking half during future workouts and half after. 16 oz + the powder is alot to gulp down when the Low-Carb Metabolic Drive is already keeping me extremely full.

8:00 PM: Single Scoop of Chocolate Metabolic Drive with 2 Tablespoons of Milled Flax (1 serving) and 1 tbsp Peanut Butter (half serving).

The only day I can really guarantee myself the time to prepare a healthy meal is Wednesday, so I’m considering having a few oz of rotisserie chicken and steamed zucchini. I don’t want to break this diet and I’m not sure if starting on my solid meal day is fair game or not. Comments?

I’d say just have your first solid meal next Wed., because like Gus and most others, we would have it on day 7…it sucks to wait 1 more day but having it on day 8 would be best…I personally wouldn’t have it tonight, and you did say you were all or nothing right?

Yeah, I started feeling guilty as soon as I had the initial thought of eating solid… but its one more day, big deal. I’ve not had any craving for food all day, the shakes are extremely filling… I can imagine having to force them down as my stomach shrinks a little. Thank you for helping me keep on track.

Absolutely man. Way to stay strong. One of the main reasons why I said that is because of how motivating it is to see your week 1 results after the first 6-7days…read the number on the scale, see those first week measurements and view those new pics side by side. It is extremely motivating to see such a change in only 1 week.

Having your HSM on the first day might slow the first week results a little. It also helps me stay with the plan Chris Shugart has designed and gives me motivation to stay so strict knowing that I get a reward of a steak or chicken and veggies for my hard work during the week.

9:00 PM: Single Scoop of Chocolate Metabolic Drive with 2 Tablespoons of Milled Flax (1 serving) and 1 tbsp Peanut Butter (half serving).

I’ll have another 2-scoop shake with flax at 10:30PM, and ZMA just before bed.

I also feel like I’m flooding this thread so I’ll start updating once or twice a day.

Wakeup:
2x HOT-ROX Extreme

Meal 1:
Orange Metabolic Drive (2 scoops)

Meal 2:
Chocolate Metabolic Drive (2 scoops) with 2x Flameout

Meal 3:
Strawberry Metabolic Drive (2 scoop) with milled flax seed (1 serving)

Mid-Day:
2x HRX with H2O and 1 Fish oil capsule and 1 Multi-Vitamin

Meal 4:
Vanilla Metabolic Drive (2 scoops) with a dash of cinnamon and 2x Flameout

Meal 5:
Vanilla Metabolic Drive (2 scoops) with dash of cinnamon

Meal 6
Chocolate Metabolic Drive (2 scoops) with milled flax seed (1 serving) and 1/2 serving of Maranatha Organic Peanut Butter and 1 enteric coated fish oil capsule.

Bed (Soon): 3 ZMA

NEPA: 2.1 miles on inclined treadmill here in my condo complex… I varied from 0 to 4 levels throughout the walk and would drop down whenever I felt my heart rate getting high (incline puts stress on my respiratory system with my larger than normal legs) and completed the walk in 35 minutes.

Notes: I had some BAD cravings for a Triple Cheeseburger from Wendy’s (its about a half mile walk from my condo)… but I followed Gus’s advice and pinched my waist to get my mind off it – this proved pretty effective.

My energy was pretty high the entire day, and I’m still getting over a sore throat that I had a few days prior to starting the diet. I also had a little struggle during my nepa because of how sore my quads are from the lunges and half assed squat attempts yesterday, but now they feel stretched and significantly less sore.

Only day two down… but hey, that puts me at 7.1% complete with the V-Diet!

Keep Spartan Strict Joel, no matter what happens! If you want those results as bad as you say you do then make it happen and finish this V-Diet Strong!

I’m real glad that I did this V-Diet Program and even when I was tempted and craving stuff(I went to get my wife food at the worst places V-Dieters should avoid!), I knew this program was working and working well. I had my Phoenix Moment already and was totally driven.

Everything from the shakes, to the training, to the Daily Walks and even keeping your head focused everyday is vitally Important if you want to milk as much benefit from the V-Diet as possible. It’s your time now Joel, make it happen and don’t ever stop until you get the body you deserve. Take care Bro!

Go Joel! You’re pretty much where I was last May. I have improved quite a bit, to the point where I am ready to go full out and do a velocity myself! After this HST cycle, I am going to go for it. Stay tuned this mid-March, I’ll post my own log here as well
