Hello everyone. I am new to this site, but I read some of the posts and i would like to add my 2 cents. I only do bodyweight. Dead lifting and squatting isn’t the only way to build strong muscular legs. I prefer the outdoors work then being inside a gym, i feel to contained.
so what do you do for legs then?
Anyone who thinks a height above 5’7 or a bicep size above 13 inches is ‘normal’ is deluding themselves.
If you restrict your study to North America and some parts of Europe, then yes, that is small (even though the average height of an american male is 5’9).
However, in every other part of the world, those dimensions are perfectly normal.
Just because you have the luxury to eat as much as you want, with the best training knowledge and equipment in the world, doesn’t mean it’s “normal”.
The american population accounts for 4 percent of the world’s entire population.
This is like comparing Jay Cutler to the average gym goer.
“Well why would I compare it to anyone who hasn’t been a serious body builder for at least ten years”.

Why would someone in America care about comparing themselves to anyone BUT the other people in America as far as this topic? Why would I compare myself to people I never see or interact with simply because they exist?
The average height for a grown man here is NOT 5’7". That is considered short here. Also, no one was talking about “13” arms". We specifically said ELEVEN INCH arms on a grown man. You basically wasted time writing this seeing as you are arguing shit no one has brought up.
Wow. Talk about astounding gnorance. I think 11" may be pretty close to the global average.
YOu know, places where men don’ eat tons of carbs out of boredom.

Bodyweight stuff is great. But not for size.
If you don’t have the right genetics, chances are you won’t grow a lot from this stuff.
If you have the genetics, you can blow up just as good from just working at a sawmill or repping out pushups and pullups a few times every other day.
Look at olympic gymnasts, the best talent and genes assembled, are they all strong and buff? Nope, some are even quite thin.
bottom line: to get muscular and gain weight, playing with weights will produce better results, faster and more consistently.

i just have to disagree with the notion that bodyweight exercises wont produce growth. and yes, lets look at gymnasts… most, if not all, pretty much have the ideal physique that people train for in a conventional gym. to say genetics is the main determent whether you can get big or not… would be ignorant.

Gymnasts utilize weight training as well. Their bodies aren’t purely the results of their BW training. The pic you posted is Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder, and I’ve seen that very same guy use dumbbells when he was prepping for some big event he had coming up. And he’s definitely not the only one.

My point had to do with the fact that arguing about male dimensions when only restricting yourself to one population does not prove your point concerning normality.
“You are wrong with just about everything you posted here. Unless the grown man is extremely short, there is no way in hell MOST MEN ON THE PLANET have 11” arms or smaller. You may also want to consider that HEIGHT issue since the average height in America is 5’10" for a grown man while I am sure it is quite different in China."

It proves my point just fine because my point was that I see very few grown men with arms that fucking small…and apparently you agree world wide since you needed to use “13 inch” arms to make your point.
Why would I give a shit about what the average man’s arms are in some third world country?
IN AMERICA I don’t see many grown men like that unless they are elderly, sickly, malnourished, or last to be picked for kickball.
Tip: Few people in America give a shit about any other country unless they are FROM that other country. That’s just the truth.

What’s all this talk about “other countries”? I thought that was just fiction.
Are you talking about exotic, far-away lands like “Canada” where they speak a completely different language?
Am I the only male on T-Nation that doesn’t care how big mine or anyone else’s arms are? Aren’t there other, more important reasons to lift? Aren’t there less juvenile ways of assessing a man’s “badass-ness”? My brother-in-law has smaller arms than me, so what? He has also served in Iraq for a year without knowing if each day was going to be his last. I’d say Ghandi was an ultimate bad ass too, but wait, he’s just a pussy because he had 10 in arms, right?

Well T-Nation is a bodybuilding website so…
Even so, they are just one body part. It’s one thing to care about it from a physique perspective, but to use it as a gauge for cutting down other guys and calling them pussies because they have “small” arms…I guess I don’t get it. I look at what a man does, not how big his arms are.

I dont think anyone was calling someone a pussy because they had small arms.I respect alot of people because of their values regardless of their arm size.I respect a few guys on this site who have built physiques because I know the work ethic involved in that. For the vast majority of people here bodybuilding is a hobby. That doesnt mean they dont have lives outside of that.

Gymnasts lift weights as well… so that pretty much shoots the rest of your post to shit right there.

pretty much exactly this^^
Why would I want to compare myself to another country? Im not going to say “Man I’m so tall at 5’11” cause the average national height in china is 5’6"! I’m so tall!"
People generally compare themselves to their peers… not third world countries (not that china is a third world country)
I could care less what the average height and weight are for countries that I dont live in and dont plan on going to.

has a VO2 max of 42.4
what is your point?
dude I ws just mentioning a fact…

And I’m just asking what your point is? What is the point you’re trying to get at by mentioning those “facts”? (which aren’t actually facts. George Washington was the first president of the united states-fact. The worlds largest animal is a blue whale-fact. The freezing point for water is 32 degrees fahrenheit-fact… Those are facts )
