My gym’s owner (nice lady that knows nothing about running a gym or business in general) is looking to make the gym accessible 24/7. She claims several people have tried to rip her off on systems. She doesn’t know where to look. I told her I would look into it for her and have found several software systems on the Web that appear decent, but who knows. Anybody got any ideas? Gym owners? She would need whatever she gets installed as well. For a point of reference, the gym is on the west side of ATL. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

She needs a giant, lawyer approved disclaimer absolver her from injurys after hours. People do dumb shit at 3 AM.
In my 20+ years of strength training, I’ve trained at a couple of gyms that were opened 24 hours, one of which I also worked at. Your gym owner should take in effect the effort that it will take to keep a gym opened all night. That is, the cleaning and maintenance of the equipment and the gym, manpower, etc.
When I was working at the gym during the graveyard shifts, there were very few members there and the guy at the counter did practically nothing as far as working.

I don’t think it will be a big hassle in this case. I know most of the members and not many people will come in after hours, with the exception of myself and a few others. Also, she won’t have an employee there. That’s why I was asking about the system necessary for 24 hours (electronic door lock, thing to swipe your card at the door, etc.)
I’m excited she’s trying to make this happen because it drives me crazy having to rush over there and get finished before closing time (9:30). Anybody know of any companies that install this type of stuff? Apparently my Google skills need work.

I can’t imagine just trusting people to be inside my gym without any sort of employee there.
What’s going to stop somebody with the electronic swiping card to let 20 of his friends through when he opens the door?

That’s strange. I have worked out at/known of numerous places that don’t have anyone on duty after regular hours. The problem you mentioned is solved by having a camera mounted inside that points at the entrance.
Nobody has any recommendations on equipment? I thought this would be rather easy with our collective intelligence and know-how.
The World Gym in St. Augustine just started a facility on Anastasia Island that is un-supervised at night, but advertises 24/7. I suppose you could call them and talk to someone, or road trip to the beach for a couple days on her dime.

The gym I train at is 24 hours with a key card and I haven’t seen the manager in weeks because I train late at night. No one is there from like 8pm to 5am. One thing they do have is internet surveillance so they can monitor the gym while at home.
This isn’t a huge city though and most of the guys who actually use it at night are pretty serious. There are no soccer moms and the way it is built, the huge windows allow anyone on the street to see right in at night.
I wouldn’t do that in a large city, but it isn’t unheard of.

I own a 24/7 gym. We have a private women’s section (like Curves) and co-ed cardio strength training sections. I have 8 cameras throughout the facility to monitor what goes on. The lock on the front door monitors who comes in and when. We have gone to great lengths to try to make things as safe as possible for everyone there. We have been open for just over a year and all is going relatively well (knock on wood).
I visited a few other similar facilities to try to do this right for our small town and business.

I go to a Gold’s Gym that is open 24 hours during weekdays but closes earlier on Saturday and Sunday. There is always one or more employees on site. At night the employee does maintance, cleaning or since this is a college town, Homework while on shift.

My gym is similar. The only people who would be there at night would be myself and a few other regulars who know what they are doing and can be trusted. It also has giant windows that you can see through from the street.
Also, Villa Rica, though close to ATL, is pretty small. I think it will be OK if I can help her get it set up right.
