as I continually feel more beat up and ‘old’, I get more an more inspiration from your log…
Strong work Harry. But your socks really clash with the kilt. Maybe a pair of navy blue socks next time? Any stone carrying at these events?
I thought it was a bold fashion statement!
Harry you are an inspiration for sure. I have noticed all shot putters have good pressing numbers. so which came first, what I mean is: does the Throws drive up the presses or the presses drive the throws upwards? does this make sense?
Thanks Pete, and you’re far from old. From what I’ve seen on other parts of this site there’s lots of young guys tryin to get to your level and very few of any age with your knowledge and experience.
Tossing all attempts at sounding non-metrosexual out the window, Steve, you’ll notice in the above picture I’m modeling blue “hose”. If you look carefully you’ll notice the red piping in my kilt which makes my red socks a perfectly acceptable accoutrement. I also have some plain white hose and as the meet was 2 days pre-labor day white would have been permissible but both bland and even gauche. So there.
No stone carrying. It’s not technically a highland event. Some gatherings do have some side events like grip strength events and even a form of wrestling, though.
Fischer, the presses drive up the throws. Convention wisdom with young throwers is: teach them good throwing technique first, then get them strong. With the increase in rotational throwers we’re seeing a lot of big throwers concentrating more on the bench than O/H pressing. Seems to get more more carryover than it does with the glide.

I’m going to get that picture put on a shirt, Matty. Tired of explaining the sheaf toss. Get, “You toss ShEEp!?” all the time. Yeah, then we have lamb chops for dinner.

I judged a games in Idaho saturday, and the folks that put it on have a sheaf with sheep legs and head sewn on, so we got to throw the sheep. weighs almost 30 lbs. It was funny.
While I didn’t throw the regular events, I did (try) to throw the challenge hammer. they made a 40lb hammer out of steel. it was awesome. I was last. I got it winding, leaned way back to pull, my wrist popped and the damn thing tore out of my hands and made a big mark in the cage. with no monstrous swinging hammer to offset my lean, I ended up tumbling over the trig.
and a good time was had by all!
Nice job at the games, Harry and your training always inspires. Hope the heat from the weather and the job cools off for you soon.
Yep, still alive and kickin. Lottsa new people in the forum here. Sorry I’ve been so remiss in posting. Please forgive me! Take me back! I’ll do better!
Ok, enough groveling.
Been hitting the throws and weights real hard in prep for, what I hope is, my last comp of the season. Working very hard on some of the more technical aspects of the throws. Feelin’ real good and ready.
Still doing chest/tri, shoulder/bi, legs/back, swimming on off day. Cut back the swims to only a 1000m so I could throw more. Throwing everyday, or night. I wanna pr in all the throws (cept caber, can’t beat 12 o’clock).
Between work and training I let my weight slip down under 230. Back up to 235 yesterday and tryin to force feed and try and be over 240 this Saturday. Then I can stand, belly to belly, next to the other fellas and not look too scrawny. Regular gangs gonna from these parts so the after meet festivities should be as fun as the meet.

Thats fine lifting Harry. Good luck at the meet.
Sniff, sniff. Sob, sob. You always hurt the ones you love…
Fully expecting PRs all around from you Harry. And lotsa bling of course -still waiting for the battleaxe to complement the sword.
Lotsa pics too, perhaps even some of you hugging a Tree or two.
Whats up Harry? Great work as usual…
Harry, is the meet this weekend the last of the season?
Halloween is our last meet, but its just a club meet. We still get 30+ throwers for them. This is the one that Carl Darby came out to last year. I’ll be judging if they’ll let me. Hip’s almost better, and I am planning on throwing my big ass off next year!
Last scheduled meet, MJ. Had some invites to others but they’re kinda far off, distance wise. Bout that time of year I like to regroup, hide out in the gym, enjoy the holidays. Weathers suppose to drop between now and Sat. Highs only suppose to be round 70. Great for a meet.

The owner of the gym occasionally posts “challenges” on a dry erase board hanging in the weight room. Latest one is “1 set, Clean and Press 150# x 20”. First thought was “doesn’t sound too hard.” Young friend of mine, just became a fireman, decided to give it a try. He’s about 220 of muscle. He did it but it weren’t easy at all. Just plain gutted out the last ones. Said it felt like he’d run miles. Had to re-think my first thought. I’m gonna have to try next week, though.
That looks like a hell of a challenge. Not sure I could do one of those reps.
that would be 20 singles for me, and I think i’d only gte the first 7
150x20 sounds interesting. I would be lucky to do 135, maybe during deload I will give it a try
Waiting for some pics of beaten up old guys, and assorted Tree hugger types.
I’d consider 100#.
Nice work Harry- good luck at your meet.
bring home the bling.
in college I power cleaned and press 135 22 times
but I weighed about the same
as a reward I got to run stairs.
sigh good living
Have you taken the bait? Pretty certain I could not do 150x20, who am I kidding, no way.
