2012 Comp Season

Harry, I was wondering how with all the heavy lifting and throwing you’ve done over the years how you have managed to keep your shoulders healthy?

Any pearls of wisdom?

Swimming anything to do with it?

Thanks

Thanks OG.
Colin, this from a guy who was playing football in his forties? Think I’m just afraid to stop. The thought of sitting around getting fat and soft scares the shit outta me.
Thanks Joe, you’re getting up there pretty good yourself.
Thanks DJS and MJ.
Steely, right down the road. When I was in high school the only thing in Madison was an old train depot. We use to dove hunt where all the houses are now. My wife goes to a friend of hers Philippino store there about once a week. Nice place.
Brett, a steady diet of red meat, cheap liquor, cheaper cigars, wild women, and zydeco music. Seriously, I have no idea. The swimmings got to help some with the shoulders but it does a lot more for me mentally. All my older brothers are really active, too. Mountain climbing, kayaking, martial arts, lumber jack comps. None of them have any major problems either. Guess we were just blessed with good genetics.

So, my day off was today…
Swimming when the sun came up. Water was cool and calm, 2000m’s slow and lazy like.
Dentist for check up (Raspberry flavored cleaning gel)
Waffle house with assorted kin to get the taste of the Raspberry flavored cleaning gel outta my mouth.
Picked up 15 50# bags of decorative gravel at Lowe’s.
Distributed 15 50# bags of gravel around varies locations as previously laid out by spousal unit.
Mowed the yard, cafefully avoiding the newly laid 15 50# bags of decorative gravel strategically located by spousal unit to prevent any possibility of mowing in a straight line.
Weed ate(?) the yard.
Washed the truck and one car.
Took whole chicken outta the freezer for dinner.
Tryin to catch up on yawl.
Hope to throw some for I eat the whole chicken.
Good day off.

weed ate sounds so much better than weed eatered, so the syntax police approve.

nice living. any affect from this storm for you and yours?

Harry, all the shit you’ve been through a few cutbacks isn’t even a bump in the road. Congrats on the golds.

Awesome stuff Harry!

Hang in there with the USPS, I did some contract work with them, and it seems as if they are really doing away with the rural routes and tons of employees are getting tossed around. For the year I did work with the USPS, people certainly get the wrong idea about USPS employees, very cool people and in my eyes very helpful.

A little yard bird will get you sorted out.

MJ, our weather has been beutiful. Not a touch from Irene in this part of the state. Thanks, Matty. With the size of the budget civil service is catching a lot of bad press. We ain’t all just sittin around gettin rich off Uncle Sugar.
Brother Barry! Damn glad to hear from you. you ole mule. Ain’t worried about me, just hate seein them screw with co-workers who ain’t got no other options.

Got to the gym after a 11 hour shift Saturday evening. Couple of unsavory characters met me there, Tree and Andy. Went from feelin tired to having a fairly good workout. Got through lifting, called up the wives and they met us at a local joint for wings and beer. The 3 of us and 2 others will be going as an informal contingent from here abouts to the highland game’s next week.

Good lifting Highlander!!

Is that a strict cleand and press or is it pushed? Either way good lift.

I am now starting to be able to put stuff over my head with no pain.

Fischer, up to 245 was strict MP. the 265 had a little dip and the 285 just didn’t cooperate at all. Based on what I’ve seen of your recovery plans I think you’re well on the way to overhead lifting again.

Yesterday

sheaf x 10
18# hammer x 10
56# wfd x 10

1500m swim

harry, what are you using to practice the sheaf?

Got 2 sheafs, MJ. One was a present from a guy that makes them and the other one is a home made version. 16#er and my home made one is about 22#. After searching the internet for the right 3 tine pitchfork found one at an old local hardware store for about a third of the best on-line price. Filed the tines down nice and sharp and thinner. Use my home made standards to throw over. Still, my worst damn event but getting better.

Last work out was wednesday night, did some light shoulder stuff, bsed with the gym owner while the wife worked out.
Swam an easy 1000m last night.
Leaving at 0430 tomorrow morning so getting everything ready today. Making my super secret recipe pre-meet spagetti for tonight. Can’t wait til tomorrow. 3 bands, girls dancing, bagpipes, lots of clan tents, craft stuff. Oh, yeah, some thtrowing heavy shit, too.

On a totally different note. WE SUCK, no, worse, WE CHOKE, when it comes to the big meets. No top 3 US finishers at the world’s in the men’s shot, disc, hammer, jav.

Good luck Harry, enjoy the dancing girls.

Satturday, hot as hell, fun as hell, 1st, masters 40+
Couple of more meets scheduled. Will be competing for a newly formed teamed, “Combat Wounded Vets Highland Team”. Vet from TN formed it a while back.

sheaf

Just catching up, awesome as always. Hope everything works out with USPS, I know the feeling of job insecurity, it sucks.
The pictures are great, congrats on all the medals.

40+?! Did you cheat and beat some young guys too?

Love the sheaf picture, is there a smiley face painted on the sack?

Thanks dday. Much appreciated.
PG, since 40ish is now young to me, I picked on several. In HG, master’s is usually 40 and up. In real big meets they divide it into 10 or even 5 year groups, e.g., 40-49, 50-59, or 40-44, 45-49, etc. Item of interest. Lot of master’s are opting to compete as Bs in the open devision as the Master’s division is too tough.
Been doing the samo samo.
Lifting, swimming, throwing. Working the throws more cause I wasn’t real happy with my distances at the last games. Technique was way off.

This has GOT to me your new avi…fucking awesome!

I’m going to get that picture put on a shirt, Matty. Tired of explaining the sheaf toss. Get, “You toss ShEEp!?” all the time. Yeah, then we have lamb chops for dinner.

Finally got a 1" drill bit for my drill press. Drilled a hole thru an old 20# shot, ran 4’ of 3/4" shedule 80 pvc thru the hole (had to sand the pvc a little], wittled down the end of 3/4" wood towel and hammered it into the end as a wedge. Voila, highland light hammer. Weight out to right at 17#. Took 15 throws with it.
