It hit a nerve.
Joe – in this last bench video, are you driving your heals down on the lift?

Not really no, I get zero leg drive on bench. I can’t make whatever mind/body connection people are talking about when they talk about leg drive.

60 day challenge is looking good,
Tate has a so you can bench video floating around
both here and on elite FTS, he goes thru the set up,
staying tight, arch etc. its very cool.
but thats coming from me- a NBF
thats no bench fag
I suspect we have similar techniques (I haven’t videoed my bench yet – but I will). I have the same problem (I was taught by a football coach a long time ago to keep my back flat – even feet off the ground if need be – to avoid injury).
In seeing feedback from people on this site, in my opinion there is a sweet spot for: 1) feet under your butt, heal drive into the floor, and back arch). I’m still working on it – but I’m not competing, so it is not as big an issue for me.
It does look like you are tightening the back of your shoulder blades at the start.

Glad I’m not the only one. I could probably bench the same weight with my feet on the bench as on the floor. I’ve never understood leg drive either.
Sorry to hear about your mother, that sucks. My wife’s mother has had that for a few years now. She’s on oxygen, but she’s still going strong.

I have the same problem, I found putting my feet under me completely, like doing leg extensions is the only way I get any kind of help from my legs. My bench is short and my legs are long so it may not work for you but something you may try.
Sorry to hear about your mother. I hope everything turns out okay

Joe: Since you’re competing, it would be really beneficial to learn to drive with your legs. Seriously, I think my legs do half the work. My ass is always so sore after bench day. For me, it’s all about the setup. It took me a LONG time to figure out how to incorporate leg drive, but it’s worth the learning curve. Can you find someone local to help you? Of course, since I hold the title of WWB*, I’m probably not qualified to give advice.

Same here, I also think I could do my meet lifts with my feet on the bench.

I’m going to read up on some things regarding bench. No Pler’s around here so I’m having to learn it solo.

Hi, Joe, been ages since I visited your thread. What’s COPD? Sounds pretty bad.
As for benching, I tried some rack benches a few weeks ago - just hold heavy bar up in the air. (Heavy for me.) Immediately had balancing problems, fussed with feet and legs, learned how to hold legs, hips and back tight. Helped my bench a lot. I think that might be what they mean by driving with legs, because I’ve started pushing with legs to push shoulders into bench. Keeps me way more stable.
By the way, “World’s Worse Bencher”, if we measure by percentage body weight, you’re doing better than me.
