I get where he was coming from but he should have used a different sport as an example. Basketball is too skill based. I imagine there are and were guys with similar physical gifts but at the end of the day I can’t imagine one of them had the skills or mindset to be like Mike. The guys in the NBA are the best and if it looks like they might not be it’s because they’re often playing with and against the other best players in the world. Guys on the playground aren’t.
I used Mike because he is the perfect example of ALL of the factors that go into making someone a champion on that level…which is the main reason why no one can claim that no other person could ever come close if that person was given the same motivators or similar ones. Most people won’t because they lack the environmental factors, the drive and the mental fortitude…not because no other human has anywhere near his actual physical capabilities.

That was the point I was making in the other thread with Ronnie Coleman as well. Ronnie got into bodybuilding because a gym owner talked him into it. Had that not happened, there would still be a Ronnie Coleman, even if you never heard of him.

The point was that we are not aware of all of the people on the planet with the greatest potential…and statistically, if there is a Michael, then there has been, will be, or currently is someone who can do it even better.

Whether they get the chance to is another matter altogether.

Either way, sorry for the hijack but this site has gotten retarded with people calling me out for every fucking statement apparently even across forums.
lol - this isn’t a “call out.” You said something interesting basketball related so I posted it for some interesting discussion among some NBA fans.

That aside, did you see the Markus Ruhl transition after two of years of training I posted in the How much mass can you gain naturally in a year thread?

He only stepped into a gym because he hurt his knee playing soccer and the doctor told him that he had to strengthen his leg. Made me wonder what if some of these mega talented athletes in professional sports had chosen bodybuilding over say the NFL?

That wasn’t aimed directly at you. Whiteflash even popped up in the other thread to tell me what an idiot I am for understanding genetics.

Not just that, but I have personally known people who are the type to make most here claim it is impossible that they are that way. They don’t all end up on tv or in pro sports. Life just doesn’t work that way.

Even becoming a politician or a movie star has more to do with being in the right place at the right time than it does truly being the one guy with the absolute greatest ability in the world.

Simple fact, there are tons of people out there that we don’t know about who have outstanding potential. That guy who can bench press 600lbs simply decided to be an Optometrist.

But then, this is the “dumbest shit”.

One of those threads was especially bad and I was surprised at how long you attempted to reason in the face of some very irrational (and hormonal imbalance driven?) nonsense.

You should be watching the games, enjoying them and analyzing them not talking shit about 'Bron. LeBron got talent on and off the court, GQ style and money.

Let me know when your done genuflecting at the throne of Lebron. Wow. dude.

I won’t lose sleep over a regular season game. And I’ll still diss James.

What?!? Is this the movie Step Up or something? Are you challenging me to dance off??? LMAO!

You’re actually scaring me now. You’ve been watching too many 1980s American break dancing movies. This has to be voted post of the year. LMAO!

I agree. Us locals all think he’s a twat. ;0

I have some extremely dope American movies for you to watch. After viewing these, you’ll be so fly and bangin. Lemme break it down for ya, your style and skillz will be like a true balla and you’ll be pullin down the benjamins in the boogie down bronx. Youse needs to be aftah that cheddar, you know what I’m saying yo?

Yo get, check it. Here’s another fly movie for you to watch homeskillet. Maybe you can come visit me and we’ll kick it in my crib with me and my crew, go ballin and then hustle for some dead presidents yo! You feeling me dawg? Cuz I’m foreal! Peace out.

Prof X has a point. Ever heard of Earl “The Goat” Manigault? Kareem said he’s the best player he’s ever seen. The guy apparently could shoot from anywhere and had a 50 inch vert.

I’ll say though MJ was great not just because of his obvious basketball skills but also because of his instinct for the game and mental fortitude.
Basically this…but I guess this is also the “dumbest shit”.
there are a lot of guys who can “shoot from anywhere” and that can jump… but that doesnt mean you’re going to be good in the NBA. Look at an NBA shoot around. Those guys hit 90% of their shots. They can all shoot but when you’re in a game and someone is hounding you THE BEST players hit around half their shots.

There is a lot more to basketball than shooting and jumping. Defense is what kills a lot of people. A lot of guys dont wanna/cant play big time D consistently.

I think we`re on the same page.

Anyway I found the vid:
http://archives.cbc.ca/sports/athletics/topics/1392/

At 40 seconds, they say Ben Johnson can bench press over 400lbs and say that it`s over 2.5x his bodyweight.

Funnily enough, in the video hes doing it on an incline, too. Though Im not sure if they were referring to the incline bench in the video when they say 400lbs. If they are than at less than 200lbs you have to imagine this guy would have been one of the best lifters ever had he focused on it alone.
Ben Johnson was a world class Olympic athlete and he was busted for steroid use.

It doesnt surprise me that a steroid using olympic athlete was strong

(ohhhhh i went there! lol)

I’m nervous about the Lakers/Heat game tomorrow.

It sucks that the Lakers are on NBA best 8 game win streak and that the Heat have lost 5 straight… That is just a recipe for disaster. If the Lakers win, who cares. They beat a slumping team thats on a losing streak. If the Heat win, everyone will talk about how they managed to figure it out and beat the the back to back champs again. F! hahaha I’m excited to watch the game though

After watching the Heat/Portland game last night, I don’t think they’re figuring anything out anytime soon. The game is being televised on FIOS so I’ll be watching too. I hate Lebron but Wade is my favorite player so I’ll still be pulling for the Heat.

Yeah but if the Lakers win you will have coast-to-coast media coverage of the Heat losing an “unfathomable” 6 in a row and people saying how they have no answers for everyone.

If it was the Magic I’d agree with you, but people will not just allow the Heat to lose and say nothing of it.

The key to the Lakers is, as always, keeping Bynum healthy.

yeah I agree. Bynum has been playing MUUUUUCH better since the break (hence the 8 game streak) He should be getting in the teens every game for points and rebounds. If he does that and gets 1-3 blocks a game I think the Lakers keep smashing teams.

Heard an interesting thing on ESPN today regarding LeBron and his teams… He left the Cavs cause the team sucked so bad but LeBron and the Heat will have to win their last 18 games if they want to match the record that LeBron had last season with the Cavs.

An interesting tidbit regarding Bynum. I was listening to the Mason & Ireland 710 AM radio show a couple of days ago and they had a caller call in and remind them that they did a show about a week ago in Santa Monica where they were setting up to interview Bynum. They had a caller call in and they set him up by saying “if Bynum was here right now, what would you say to him?”.

The caller started ripping into Bynum calling him out and questioning why he wasn’t rebounding like a true 7 footer. When Mason & Ireland told the caller that Bynum was listening, the caller kept going! He said that they should’ve traded Bynum for Anthony, blah, blah, blah.

Well since that time, Bynum has averaged over double digits in rebounds. Coincidence?

if the rant of some random no name phone call guy is what it took to get bynum to play better… then he really is a pussy. lol

I always just thought Bynum played soft. I’m sure he’s been yelled at more than once by Kobe for playing like a bitch down low most of the time… why would that caller be what fired him up?

I think it could have to do with him feeling healthier. I mean he hasnt played thaaaat many minutes so far this season. Maybe his kinda hitting his stride right now, ya know? He’s been injury plagued his entire career… maybe he’s finally feeling healthy

My 76’ers have been hot for such a young team. That 3-13 start still hurts but I see some great team basketball and excellent defense every game. Playing Durant’s Thunder tonight will be another big test (lost to the Mavs the other week).

They have a solid roster top to bottom and have really bought into Collins system

I know this is an NBA thread but has anyone see this D3 basketball player dunk? Jacob Tucker 5’11’’ guard with a 50 inch vertical…White Flash is that you???

Here comes Gettnitdone spreading more misinformation. What Kareem actually said was the Manigault was the best player he’d seen not in the NBA, and the guy never had his vert measured. It was all urban legend. Kareem debunked the “touch the top of the backboard” legend by saying he never saw Manigualt do it despite growing up with him, and didn’t believe he could do it. If any of you have ever been to the hood people make a lot of outrageous claims to make themselves feel better about the bleek situautions they’ve put themselves in.
