I just saw the results…holy fucking fuck for the 69’s. Oxana is a beast in her own right, and I thought she was going to come in and kill. But, China out of fucking nowhere.
Tanir bombing is too bad. The guy probably has another two Olympics in him. I remember the first time I saw him was back in 2004 in Athens. It blew me away to see a kid beating the shit out of men.
I can’t help but think that Sagir has opened too heavy for the last 2 big comps he’s done. His snatch has got worse over the last few years but he opens like it’s got better.
The backwards momentum on that first snatch was right out of the Vanev school of lifting, but unfortunately Sagir jumps forwards to receive his lifts whereas Vanev jumped back about 12 inches and thus got away with it most of the time. At least his elbow stayed intact!
Liu Chunhong though - wow! What an absolute machine. 5 world records in the space of just over an hour.

Yeah, and Vanev’s elbow got fucked three times. I would have freaked out after the second time, at most
Sagir definitely has more Olympics in him, at least considering his physical age. But he wasn’t the “speed demon” in Beijing. He never looked like he was top weightlifter muscle-wise, but this time I think it was visible that he wasn’t in top notch condition.
Perepetchenov wasn’t favourite for the title, so it wasn’t surprise that he didn’t get it, but I think he performed below the expectations.
First title in men’s competition, which goes out of China. These Korean guys cleaned fuckin’ strong. I thought the winning total would be over 366, though.

I was watching the results, thinking ‘Why doesn’t she drop her C&J opener? She’s got it in the bag.’ Because 5kg over the next highest is freakin 30lbs below her best!

The total of their opening attempts has to be within 15kg (20kg for the men) of their qualifying total. Nobody gets a chance for an easy opener.
4.3.6
The announced Entry Total indicated on the Final Entry form will be accepted
and considered for the group allocation. The aggregate weight of the starting
attempts in the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk cannot be less than 20 kg
below the announced Entry Total for the male competition, and less than 15
kg below the announced Entry Total for the female competition. The
observation of this rule is the responsibility of the Competition Secretary
and/or the Chief Marshal. This rule shall apply unless otherwise stated.
Example: A male athlete enters a competition with an announced Entry Total
of 200 kg. The total weight of the first attempts in the Snatch and Clean and
Jerk must not, in any case, be less than 180 kg (80 and 100 kg, 70 and 110
kg or any other combination). If this rule is not adhered to, the Jury can
exclude the athlete from the competition.
There are quite a few examples of athletes, who overcame elbow dislocations, and were successful after the injury.
I think in the documentary about Bulgarian weightlifters, Abadjiev tells such a story - about lifter, who wins major competition, after such injury. Zlatan Vanev dislocated his elbow in 1998, 2000 and 2005. Nevertheless, he was World Champion in 2002 and European Champion in 2003.
Anyway, lets wish speedy recovery to the Hungarian.
P.S. The day after tomorrow - the 85’s showdown. I say Rybakou will break the snatch WR with more than 1 kg

Yes that was awesome, 5 world records-two snatch, two total, one clean and jerk-, talk about domination. She had an awesome little yell before she lifted also.
DoubleDuce wrote:
I may sound like an idiot for asking, but why do they put the smaller plates outside the collars?
I think it’s because it’s more convenient.
I mean if you’re already loaded with 195KG (5KG coming from those collars) and want to move to 197, just add a pair of greens on each side and you’re set.

Those are new “friction discs.” It takes less time to load the bar if they don’t have to take the collars off every time. That way they only take the collars off every 10kg. Makes the meet run faster.

On the records it looked like there were no technique “faults” as in it looked like she was lifting a lighter weight. I think it’s disgusting there is no GB team although Breeze did give it a very good go.

My guess is that that rule was meant to prevent people from claiming the min opener and changing it last minute, but it’s funny that it prevents easy wins as well.
Ouch, I hope he heals soon and comes back even stronger.
Honestly, probably not. Dislocations often end lifting careers at that level.

It could have been alot worse than it was in a # of ways. Imagine if his arm would have exploded on international TV or if the bar had landed on him worse than it did.

He’d have been far luckier if it’d just broken. It’ll take at least two years to recover normal range of motion after an ulnar dislocation of that severity, and his joint capsule is likely trashed. He’ll have arthritis in that elbow before he’s 50, more than likely. I really feel for him.
But you’re right, he’s lucky the bar didn’t brain him.
I have to say I was very impressed with the speed with which the workers acted, covering him from view and attending to him.
Batchaya has the weirdest technique I have ever seen. He cleans with an extremely narrow stance, heels almost touching each other, and a very narrow grip on the bar. But when he squats the weight up, he throws his feet out WAY far and pushes his knees WAY out. Then when he jerks he lowers his shoulders, grabs the bar just inside the collars, and power jerks. WTFFFF
How does it feel to be Li Hongli and be the only one on your team to not get gold? I wonder if they all sit around the break room making fun of him: ‘Hey, Li, check this out: you ever see one of these? We all got’em. you wanna hold mine?’
Not that silver is bad, especially a lose on bodyweight, but he’ll probably be known as the one who broke China’s streak.
