2008 Beijing Olympics Weightlifting Thread

Man China is really cleaning up with all these golds. All their lifters have been looking extremely sharp in terms of form, most of their final attempts look as easy as their firsts. Anyone know what happened to Shi Zhiyong in the 69kg A group? I noticed he droppped out after the snatch session.

Just saw the Men 69 kg. Really great, olympic level competition.

So many things that can be mentioned as highlights - Liao Hui’s two successful snatches after his failed first attempt, Lee Baeyong’s two attempts in the C&J after injuring his knee in the first, Martirosyan, who nearly bombed, managing to get the bronze with his last attempt, Dabaya’s ridiculous 187 kg C&J, Liao Hui’s even more ridiculous 190 kg C&J…

It’s a pitty that Shi Zhiyong and Lee Baeyong couldn’t finish the competition like they deserved to, both are great lifters.

Liao Hui may be the next Zhang Guozheng. Too bad he uses split jerk

The 48kg (i think) Womens canadian lifter is so hot. I’d watch her snatch all day.

Did they say what was wrong with that Cambodian (I think) guy that couldn’t get a grip in the snatch? I watched online and there was no commentary.

On a side note, is there any way to get commentary online?

He was Columbian. He injured his thumb 2 weeks ago and the docs were unable to get it fixed in time. Pretty harsh.

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend watching the women’s 63kg B class. Michaela Breeze’s performance is pretty special, and a demonstration of why weightlifting should stay in the Games.

That was painful to watch, I felt so sorry for him.

Are any of the weightlifting events going to have some shine on TV, or will we have to stick to online viewing?
They’ve been showing highlights of the men’s A sessions on MSNBC, usually about half an hour worth, with Shane Hammann doing commentary. MSNBC is on the air from 5AM-5PM though, so hard to tell when lifting’s gonna be on.

Why is Rezazedeh out?

By the sounds of things it’s because he knew he wasn’t gonna win.
If that’s the case then who is expected to win???
Rezazadeh has been dominating the heavy weights for years, hadn’t heard of anyone knocking him out.

Well…Rezazadeh’s reasoning to quitting this year was because he was involved in a car injury and felt that he wasn’t in the best condition to compete.

He also said that his doctor felt it was best to sit out of these games.

He also wanted to make way for other younger lifters whom which he believed could accomplish what he did.

So in other words, yeah pretty much…he knew he wouldn’t win.

I think China as usual will be a scary force in this category, in with the Russians and Kazaks. 105+ isn’t so interesting without Reza.

For me, the games only began at 69KG.

China won’t be a force at all. They have no lifters in the weight class, and no supers of that calibre anyway. Neither do Kazakhstan.

Top 3: Scerbahtis, Steiner, Chigishev, not necessarily in that order.

105kg+ is actually more interesting without Reza. Now we have 3 guys all of whom could win, instead of knowing in advance that one guy is going to take his openers after everyone else has finished.

What confused me here was why the french athlete lifted 187 succesfully and made the jump to 197 where he failed to move the weight at all, practically handing gold to the chinese lifter

He had to take 197kg to get the gold on bodyweight (they would have known that Liao had 190kg down for his third lift), but it looked like more of a gesture than anything. He was 7kg behind after the snatch, so he didn’t have any choice but to stick a silly weight on the bar for the C&J, even though it was waaaay over what he’d ever done before and had pretty much zero chance of lifting.

The way he handled 187, I thought he’d have a shot at hitting 197.

I feel bad for the Korean. All he had to do was hit his opener to secure a medal, but he twisted his ankle or hit his knee on the ground. He still came out twice to try again. On the third attempt, he racked it, but fell forward. He was actually pounding the ground in frustration. To come so close, with a weight you know you can do easily, at what is most likely your last Olympics, and fall short because of one small mistake.

WTF? Taner Sagir bombs in the snatch!

Liu Chunhong jesus fucking christ trashing her opponents
