Geez, you guys do an awful lot of warmup sets. I usually only do two warmup sets of 2-3 reps after some dynamic stretching.
Can an Old guy jump into this? I have a meet in 3 1/2 weeks but am considering doing the old Mark Berry/ Randy Strossen routine for 6 weeks. I haven’t done 20 rep squats for about 2 years. Last time I hit 405 for 21 before passing out. They were a bit high and sloppy for sure. I am 46 and 195 pounds.
I don’t know if the last post I posted did show up here. but something is definately up with T-Nation technically speaking. When I loaded this thread a few minutes ago, there was only 13 pages. And not even e refresh would bring up anything more. Seems like it is all back to normal now.
oldmontanalifter, you are welcome to join. Read the first post for rules. Keep the squats deep. ![]()
I’m still trying to keep this challenge alive. This time aiming for 190kg x 20 reps in the squat. So far I have gotten 16 reps. The challenge is a very hard one.
16 reps at 190kg:
I’ve aborted my hunt for trying 20 reps at 190kg, but will get back to that later. Anyway, I’ve made some pep talk with a friend that’s never been squatting seriously, and today he did 120kg x 20 reps in the squat.
If only everyone would experience the joy of high rep squats, then we would have a better world!
I think I’m going to play too. This is only 135lbs but it’s my second set in about 10 minutes at 124lbs bw. I normally don’t do a ton of high reps but I’m on a ‘deload’ week before getting back into gear for my next meet and was having fun goofing around. It was after regular squat training, bench and deadlift. I was full of piss and vinegar that day.
The reason for the second set was the first one didn’t tape.
225 x 20 @ 175
some are a little high… i dont go ATG normally… i go just below parallel (like 1")
peace

Even being your second set, it looks like you could bust out 20 with a lot more weight!

I think you’re right. Maybe I’ll try it after my next meet. That day I did 102 squat reps with 110-125% of my body weight and felt like complete ass the next day ![]()

Congratulations! I think you are the first woman doing the 20-rep challenge! Very good effort!

Nice effort. Congratulations on taking on the challenge!
I have a Gym in Frankston Australia, where I make all my clients do high rep squats. I dont have film, as I wasnt aware of this thread, but I have a website where you can see pics.
I’m not talking about my lifts, clients only, so your going to have to trust me.
Nick did 330lb x 20 @ 230lbs
James did 330lb x 20 @ 235lbs
Fat Dave did 132lb x 120 reps @ 225lb
Max did 220lb x 20 @ 147lb…150% bodyweight…16yo
Nina did 132lbs x 50…bodyweight…43yo woman
Max squatted 175lb 500 times in his 90 minute session @ 145lb
No belts, no spotters, and in James case, no squat stands. He was going to rack the bar at 11 reps, so I threw the squat stands out the gym…tough love…he thanked me later
I’ve been doing these for about a month with a missed week but I haven’t tested my max for awhile so I don’t know if it’s helping there (but my running speeds have improved significantly, not that anyone here cares about that :-P).
I’ve been doing 5 sets (front squats, I have no rack) my last 5 sets @ 120. My thighs have gotten thinner at the top (was 23 inches, now 22.5) and thicker at the middle also by about half an inch (21.5 inches). Fucking hard they are though! I took those measurements more than a month ago so that might not mean as much.
Post videos if you have anything to show. Of course I trust those numbers given, but it is so much more fun to see some real squats.
Here’s the leader board:
183.87kg/405lbs x 26 reps:
180kg/396lbs x 20 reps:

I’m Nick that Markos mentions.
Here is a vid of me doing 145kg (319lbs) with just over 12 months training. Sorry about the crap video angle it was just a muck around in my local gym, I didn’t know I would be submitting it to this forum.
I’ll post up some vids and pics of my depth, but dont worry I leave skid marks on the ground.
Thanks for posting that up Nick
why the suppppper high rep squatting? 500 reps is a shit ton!
Nick: Nice squatting. Seems like you have some balance issues during the set, and you started to take pauses at the top before the 10 rep mark. A tip can be to do as many reps as possible before you start taking pauses at the top. I am sure you can do 150kg x 20 reps.
Kudos for having the guts to post the video! Nice going. Keep doing this!
Thanks Stallion. I certainly had some balance issues throughout the set, i put it down to squatting in old Nike running shoes I dont own proper weightlifting shoes. I have used a mates a few times though and the difference is huge, I simply dont move.
I wont be attempting 150 x 20 for a long time as I’m, recovering from a disc bulge in L4/L5 of the lower back, and have just started squatting again. I just started squatting again after 8 months off, hit a massive 80kg x 20 x 3, hahah. Oh well 2.5kg extra per session should se me back at some good numbers by new years.
I also had a lower back injury that put me out of squatting for more than a year, this was back in 2007. After I started squatting again, approx 12+ months after the accident, I started slowly, and after a while I did 150kg x 20. Then I just kept going, and by the end of the year I hit 180kg x 20. (In 2008)…
Many lifters have come back from injuries, and I think you can too! Just listen to your body and don’t push too much if you are not ready for it!
Squatting in running shoes is silly. Get a pair of Do-wins or other good lifting shoes. I use the Do-wins and can reccomend them. Before I used them however, I just used a pair of indoor shoes with a flat sole…
