2 Peri WO Questions

First: SURGE Workout Fuel and shorter workouts.
I’m a relative newbie (19 y/o, 8 months serious training), and am focusing on my core lifts. 3 days a week of 5x5 for an upper body push and pull, and either a squat or dead variation.

Then, I usually end with 3x8 for a few beach exercises: curls, abs, calves etc. My entire session is 45 mins, 60 tops. Now, I’ve been using SWF and been pleased with it so far, but would someone with my level of experience and duration of workouts really benefit from SWF?

Would I be better off just double dosing regular Surge? I figure more calories and protein around my workouts cant be a bad thing…

Secondly: what do you guys recommend regarding post WO for sprint sessions? 2 days a week I do a form of sprints (4x400, 6x200, etc) or rower sprints (10x125, 4x500). What should I do after these workouts? Regular Surge protocal with a solid meal 60 misn later? Whey shake and a meal? Just eat a solid meal when I’m finished?

Thoughts?

I find the effects of Fuel work best when I’m running a circuit with short rests and high reps, intensity 100%. When I go heavy low reps with long rests between (squat, bench, dead lift days) it doesn’t “kick in” like it does on circuit days.

Not sure about your age playing a role, but you’ll find several guys saying you should be 2 years solid training under your belt before you even mess with supplements. Go with 6 whole food meals a day and let yourself grow naturally. I didn’t start training until 25 so I can’t speak on the age + supplements from personal experience, just what I’ve read here.

You are correct on more cal’s and more protein structured around your workouts. Can’t go wrong there. A good rule to follow is 2:1 ratio, carbs to protein. For post workout on sprint days I wouldn’t change your protocal from a training day. Putting your body thru sprints or lifting weights, you still need to recover…my 2 cents.

You’ll also find plenty of knowledgeable people who say this is hog wash.

The problem is when newbies focus on supplements at the expense of proper diet and training. As long as you don’t fall prey to this trap you’ll be fine using either of these products.

yeah, I’m not trying to use the supps as a magic bullet to instantly get hyoooooooge and ripped. I know hard work and proper nutrition are the core of any successful trainee. I also figure the 2 year rule shouldn’t really apply to food supps.

Post workout simple sugars and protein work regardless of your training experience. I’m simply wondering which you guys would think is better in my case, SURGE Workout Fuel or regular double dose Surge.

Thanks for the input regarding the sprints too, thats kinda the lines I was thinking along.

As I’ve posted elsewhere, I’d go with Surge Workout Fuel if forced to choose only one supplement.

I think I’ll keep the fuel. I tried dropping it today (and will for a few more sessions just to make sure) and my workout did suffer. Nothing crazy, but it was a struggle to make the same reps with the same weight I used last week when I was using fuel. I’ll see how my other workouts compared to the fueled versions a week before

HK is correct here and just to clarify, I did not have those 2 years under my belt, at 135lbs I went straight to 4,000 cal’s a day but ALSO bought a supplement for every damn thing under the sun. I fell victim to the newbie supplement scam. I did gain 50 lbs but at the expense of 30% body fat. I’m better informed now on what works and what doesn’t and I’m glad I found T-Nation and Biotest. With the help on this site and forum, my training has peaked to the next level and the results are incredible. 180lbs, 10%…

You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, keep up the good work and you’ll see results.
