18 YO Aspiring PLers Squatting 420x5

Wide stance is indeed stronger, if you go to or above parallel, but it doesn’t work in raw squatting where you have to go past parallel.

UNLESS, you have super long legs, even then it takes a ton of hip flexibility

true. i think squatting too wide raw can kill your hips

That’s what I found. I also lose a ton of power once I get below paralles.

YES! i can go very wide and pretty heavy with a box above parallel and really use my hips to pop the weight up but free squatting that way just doesnt work for me

im just not hip dominant

I am hip dominant and I still feel that way about wide squatting.

I love the way you think man

Tell stan efferding that.

he is one of the few.

It’s not necessarily the right way for everyone, but it works for some REALLY fucking strong people and is definitely not the wrong way.

i agree. check this guy out though.

like larry10 said most raw wide squatters do have long legs too

btw most of the guys in those vids barely get depth

Louie Simmons is an equipped powerlifter that trains with other equipped powerlifters

He is completely wrong on wide stance squatting, but what do you expect? Obviously he is going to promote what he does. He isnt gonna say “yeah my form is some bullshit used to reduce the ROM while taking advantage of the equipment at the bottom position”

He needs to sell.

Ever notice how countless raw lifters dont box squat, dont use a super side stance, and many dont use bands/chains? That is because all that bullshit is made for equipped lifters to emulate using their suits.

Simmons is a smart man, and a terrific salesman. But here is a simple way to know he is wrong. He says a narrow stance cant go wide, but a wide can always go narrow. Show me one clip of any westside lifter going ATG with a weight close to what oly lifters do. I bet Simmons could barely do 405 like that. Mark Bell admitted himself that his oly squat is total dick.

I have no problem with equipped lifters, but I do have problems with the misinformation and over-selling associated with it.

YES someone agrees with me!! too many people see these guys squatting crazy weight with super wide stances and dont realize its equipped

I’m going to give my .02 here, but these guys are crazy impressive and the best of the best. I used to try to squat like Sam for years, and never got depth, and I love him, but i’ve seen his vids from the side, he doesn’t always get depth either.

Wilkerson - no depth

Lilly- not squatting that wide, especially for a guy with long legs like him.

Byrd - questionable depth… and he’s one of my fav lifters

Green - uber long legs, that video looks high, then at the clash for cash he sunk 760 like a boss… he still has legs to his chest though.

Efferding is the only wide stance guy I see consistently getting depth.

Pozdeev - super long legs, but has the form and ankle flexibility to make it work. He’s possibly the best squatter in the world, or Melanichev

I’ve also done multi ply lifting and it was awesome, but I was high.

Louie is a genius, and his goal is to lift the most weight possible within the rules, he simply doens’t care where he does it, and has been known to cherry pick his meets and if they’re calling high at a meet, he calls his lifters up early.

Good on him, he’s a winner, IMO.

They squat high, but there’s still great advice to be had. When I think of westside, I think of their 18+ 800+ deadlifters… that’s total insanity. So I pay attention to all his writings, I just take them with a grain of salt.

I could go on and on, but I just take what’s useful, and always remember, they train in gear, or in ways to get them used to gear without taxing the CNS or getting hurt.

I really like your reply, thanks for sharing

alright here is BjBig’ squat …feedback please

Most of these don’t even look all that wide to me – more like a medium stance.

your training partners squat looks good, nice and deep.

My one critique is that he needs to get a bigger air in his belly, he takes a fairly shallow breath before he descends, tell him to take a big breath and hold it, and push against his belt, that will really increase his core strength
