yep. Basically, it mostly comes down to height in that tall people should not be squat jerking. The first issue is terrible leverages with femur length compared to tibia length, which puts you at a mechanical disadvantage in the bottom of a squat. The second issue is related to the first issue in that tall people always have to work on a stronger squat and it’s usually not their strong point (think tall like Ihor Shymechko), so to do ANOTHER squat (in the squat jerk) after you just cleaned it is proooobably not a great idea.

^^Scratch that. Apparently he trained squat jerks but changed to power jerks for the last two after he missed.
Pat Mendes training for squat jerks makes little sense to me.
He has pain in his hips from an injury that apparently is less of a problem when he squat jerks, I’m assuming compared to split jerks. But You’d think a power jerk would be the thing to do for hip pain? But I know nothing. That’s why I thought his squat jerk was accidental.

Surely a second squat would be worse for a hip injury?

I guess it must have hurt on his first attempt and changed it then?

The hip issue is a long term thing though. So john said at least.
In response to the original post, have you seen Artem Ivanov?

He’s immense and though I love Ilya Ilin as well, I really hope this guy wins the gold in London because he’s come second at consecutive world championships now by 1kg.

When you squat jerk, do your shoulders/arms twist forward? I think thats internal rotating?
Power jerking and squat jerking feel nearly the same for my shoulders and arms. The only difference is with squat jerking, you have to extend/flex the shoulders upward with more rigor than with a power jerk. The spine extension is out of the world. Quite the liberating stretch!
Although really that’s mostly the reason, other than balance, for the difficulty of squat vs. power or split jerking. Everything must be tighter, given the same variables.

94kg class btw.
I’m an Ilin guy, but Ivanov is hella impressive. That 235 is insane (wonder how heavy he was for that?) and look at the man’s quads.
