100 Pushups

Congratulations Headhunter. That’s quite an accomplishment, especially for your size. I’m curious about a few things What’s you 1RM bench? How long did the set of 100 take? 2-3min? Was every rep consecutive or did you hold at the top to take a few breaths occasionally throughout the set.

Good luck on the pullups.
Thanks, SL. Because of my sport, I rarely lifted heavy until recently. In TKD sparring, you have to be able to punch and kick for 2 or 3 minutes, depending on the tournament. I have used Chad Waterbury’s 10 x 3 in the bench and got up to 330. According to him, that means my 6 rep max is 330. But, most of my work is endurance-type, so I don’t know my one-rep max. I’m pretty sure I’m slightly more red than white fiber.

For the push-ups, it is tempting to hold your breath, but this’ll stop you aerobically. I breathe in on the way down and out on the push. So, no, I didn’t pause during the 100. If you train for the pushups, pattern your breathing this way. It helps.

Sidenote: I think sparring helped with getting the 100. If you’ve ever sparred for 3 minutes all out (I’ve done this against multiple opponents also and it is a SOB!:), that’s similar to the effort required to get the 100.

Very impressive espically at over 285. I’ve seen 130 pounders do over 200 straight but it really doesn’t count consideing they benched 75 lbs.

Congrats on the numbers HH.
I am 34 and just got to 100 pushups. I have to sneak off because of my son. If not he thinks I am playing horsey and can only get maybe 30. As for pullups I started out with maybe only 2. Now since greasing the groove I can do 10 to front 10 to the back and between 5-7 chinups after all that.

Cheers RJ

An easier version would be assuming the regular pushup position but lifting with one of the arms while using the other only for balance.
This is a much better way to do one-handed pushups then the typical thing where you put one leg out and twist your body.

My brother has long forearms and short upper arms, and can do a strict one-handed pushup - feet together, body straight, and hand in the center of his chest.

Outstanding work! Can you tell us how you got to 100? Rep schemes and so forth? Always cool to learn new things!

After reading about pullups and doorway chin bars (see above), I bought a workout station that has a dip station, pullup, and pushup stations. I’m guessing the doorway jobs would not hold me. I’m also going to try the dips.

Basically I greased the groove. I would sneak in set of 20 throughout the day. Then 20 turned into 40 and so on. Then one day I did’nt stop until 100. As for pullups I would pyramid 2-3-4-3-2 and increase those numbers. Currently I am doing pups situps, pullups, hindu squats, bootstrappers, road work and abs. Hope this helps on your quest.

Cheers RJ

huh, are you talking about normal pushups or single arm ones? Single arm 100 you can forget about it.

One of our teachers, retired now, told me of his DI in the Marines. He said he saw this DI do one hundred pushups with each arm. Since this man is a pretty straight shooter, I believe him.

I probably AM too damn old to try this but what a way to go!

Definitely possible, I knew a number of people when I was in the Marines who could do incredible volumes of pushups. I did 1000 one time over about 4 hours after I pissed off one of the instructors at electro-optics school. Don’t ask me to do that now though, it’s all about what you practice, if you work extensively on strength endurance you can definitely build it up.

Good Work! I know how it feels to perform 100 pushups. When training for my 1st Dan in TKD it was made known that 100 pushups would be another requirement to be a black belt.

I worked in sets of 20 each time shortening the rest interval.

That testing was the hardest workout I have ever had.

Lean a ramp against the wall, starting at about 45 degrees. Gradually bring the ramp down.

After watching the thug training videos in this forum, I now feel like a wimp. Where’s the nearest playground :)?

if you want to increase your pullups, investing in a set of rings might not be a bad idea. my PR went 14 to 30 (on a bar) in 4 weeks.

Sounds like bullshit.

With a name like Dr. Awesome it has to be true… jk. 14-30 can be done just by starting to lift weights in 4 weeks.

100 Push-ups in a row for anyone is a really good achievement. The fact that you are 51 and a very large person makes it even more of a tremendous achievement.

Congratulations keep up the great work!
I was just about to say this. Though I don’t think 51 is “old”, but definately over the hill. Most people in there 50’s probably can’t do more than ten pushups. Great job!

I’ve gotten to a hundred, though with resting in the locked-out position. I can’t imagine 100 single-arm. I’d say I could do about 75 straight regular right now, but maybe ten single-arm. 100 might be unrealistic, but as the thugs in the thug workout said, they’ll get you a huge chest. You just have to bark when you finish your set!

I see other guys in my age group and you can see that they’re letting go. I don’t know if I’ll ever do my goal of 100 one arms (that probably is unrealistic) but I’m going to try.

I also want to do 20 clean, dead-hang pullups. If I could do the pullup and press-up, like the guy on the first Thug video, THAT would be a real accomplishment.

Thank you guys for all the positive input! You guys are a class act!!

I should probably add that I was working on my kip at the same time

I know what it takes to do 30 pull-ups as I reached that point once. And with that I know that it’s nearly impossible for your maximum number of pull-ups to go from 14 to 30 in 4 weeks.

14 deadhangs to 30 kips in four weeks at 180# is not really all that difficult provided one has adequate grip strength

Well then it’s not a progression now is it? That’s like saying “I went from 12 squats to 28 powercleans”. You either measure one or the other…

Excuse me gents, but what is a ‘kip’?

Also, can you give more details about going from 14 to 30 pullups in 4 weeks? It took me 2 months of work to get to 100 pushups. I’d love to be able to get back to 6 pullups (slacked off getting ready for tournaments).

Thanks!
