10 Yr. Old Beginner to OL Video

This is a video of a 10yrs. old boy that I have been working with recently. He snatches 60lbs. and Clean & Jerks 70 lbs. in the video. He is a very big kid for his age and eager to get stronger. He wants to compete in strength sports we he gets older, rather than play football or other team sports.

Have him clean up his technique. If he’s interested, let him go for it.

I would agree, he needs to get technique down and work on it for a couple years so it is automatic by the time he reaches the age when his strength will start going up fast.

Good to see young lifters!

My bro at 14 has done 52/71 in comp and 53/73 in training @ 52kg bw  been lifting for 3yrs now! 4yrs in June! 3yrs British Champ for age and weightclass. Very sharp technique.

With all due respect for a 10yrs. old who trains 2xweek, for only the last 3 months his technique is fine at this stage. I teach power movements first, while still doing full front squats and overhead squats. I’m more concerned about him developing a strong pull first before worrying about full squats to catch the weight with. He bends his elbows too early and thats his chief technical flaw. He is incredibly early in the learning curve and the full technique lifts will come later. I know of many coaches who wait years before worrying about full technique lifts. BTW this is a kid who could not do a single pushup 3 months ago, last workout his sets went 10,10,10,15!

He looks like a big boy, so that’s very cool that you got him doing that many push ups when he couldn’t do any before.

Are there any ill effects to a pre-pubescent lifting weights like that? If not, I’m going to have my six year old start tossing kettlebells!

6 years old might be too young, not because of physical immaturity, but cognitively. I don’t think a 6 yr. is “coachable”. I think the greatest limiting factor to coaching is their ability to understand what you are teaching. A 6 yrs. would be better off going outside and playing “rough”, running, monkey bars, throwing things, bullying kids smaller than him, etc.

Doubtful. Most world champions start lifting by 10 or 12. I do agree with Crow that 6 is a tad bit young. But you could easily teach bodyweight movements like squats or overhead squats with a PVC pipe.

i disagree, i found that young kids are pretty coachable as long as u stick to simple movements. i teach some younger kids and i find it easier to coach the 4-8 year olds then the older kids. of course BW movements make up most of the time, but BB movements are done with a stick and some weight gets thrown in if they are ready for it.
