Your View on the 1980 Mr. Olympia?

“Roger looked into his eyes and odd behavior. (check Arnold’s redness and head veins) Cocaine is a hell of a drug!..”

Sorry, but I have to call “BS” on this anecdote! (yes, I know it’s not yours) It’s utter nonsense.
People loved to hate Arnold — especially regarding this particular night (myself included). NEVER heard he was “on something”… And believe me, we WOULD have heard from multiple sources if this were so!!
I have no doubt that contest preparation could mimic recreational drugs to any observer. Diuretics and Electrolyte Depletion are a much more likely cause for his shakes than cocaine use!!

I don’t think that I will gain any new piece of information on Arnold (probably I would love to, just to see is there any bottom for his depravity), but I applaud any efforts in exposing his true identity and character. Even if only few people still care about it. This should be done for the sole reason of making things straight and factual: similar to exposing the lies behind the official narrative of 9/11 events or fighting the official propaganda which tries to present Soviet Russia as a victim of Nazy aggression in a fight between “good” and “evil”.

Exactly. Especially Mentzer would have brought it up if there was any real suspicion of it. Plus redness and head veins are not a sign of cocaine use. Source: I worked in an addiction recovery facility years ago.

Back in 1980 I don’t think anyone cared what drugs anyone else was using, unless they thought they might look better if they used it also.

Arnold has talked about it. It wasn’t a scam just good marketing. Him and Franco ran the business and said they were European brick layers. They spoke a lot of German in front of customers to seem more European. The customers let them take the old bricks and they then resold them as antique bricks to other customers for other projects.

The documentary is quite the eye-opener, proving things were more sinister than I ever imagined. (and I have looked into it for years, including speaking with Mike Mentzer, who didn’t know the depths of it all). The Australian connection plays a lofty role.

As for Arnold’s drug usage. Roger saw him backstage and stood next to him, so I take what he said over a magazine, DVD, or hearsay. It’s evident Arnold had a chest and arms … that was it! Hardly Mr Olympia material against others, in his '80 condition.

Remember, he was allowed entry at the last moment, defying IFBB rules. His minion, Franco, coming on stage to towel him down. Another violation of rules. It was angled towards Arnold every step of the way. And once you realise what lays at the core, it’s evident there was no way any of the other competitors has a snow balls chance in hell. Even CBS saw what a farce it was and refused to air their footage.

Anyway, that’s all I can say. None of what’s about to be revealed revolves around “conspiracy”. It dates back to well before the actual contest, and Pumping Iron footage is further proof of the stakes. For the naysayers, take the information as you choose.

Lastly, the documentary producer has made many (successful) productions, he researches and sources his material for authenticity.

The sad thing is that this is most likely not the only contest where these things happened. How many other contests was Arnold in? Remember the Olympia where Sergio was banned from it because he participated in some other contest ? Bottom line, Arnold had to win. It’s almost as bad as pro wrestling. Actually it’s worse because we know wrestling is a joke.

Remember that disgusted face on Arnold after that first Arnold Olympia where he lost to Sergio . He probably expected it to be rigged for him to win. After that he probably said I will never lose again and he didn’t .

Exactly right. Look at the following year, where a one-legged, bitch titted Franco was given the nod. Another slur against us fans. That’s when pro-bodybuilding lost all credibility for me.

So the documentary will confirm what many, if not most, already believe… it wasn’t a fair contest. That doesn’t sound like something with blockbuster potential. It is hard to imagine that the details are any worse than some of the other things that have already been revealed about Arnold’s early days in bodybuilding, and his character flaws.

As you say, CBS thought it questionable enough that they didn’t even bother to air the footage from the contest. Whatever bounce to his career that Arnold thought he was getting from that 7th title didn’t really materialize due to the controversy. He has a reputation as a smart guy, but this particular decision (to compete) wasn’t one of his best moves. He just didn’t need it. He had already moved past bodybuilding.

Agreed, Simon. But hey, what’s another conspiracy theory in this day and age. Maybe we’ll learn the Chinese or Russia was behind Arnold’s 1980 victory.

I used cocaine for three years, thrice a week and my palor stayed completely normal and my head veins stayed put. 2 grams 3 days per week.
I just felt great.

I look forward to the documentary. Thanks for posting this.

If you talk to Roger Walker again, I’d like to know how he felt about the 1975 Mr. Universe. Ken Waller won but from the little you could see, Roger looked great and so did the guy from Wales. It could be the case of another Weider boy winning when another deserved it!

I can’t believe anyone thinks this is going to be picked up by a major film maker , lol.

There really is no controversy. This ongoing myth really needs to die now. Controversial? Not really, big guys always have the advantage. Dorian over Ray and mostly Cutler over Dexter etc. Arnold was big and developed while the other competitors were tiny compared to him. Bigger is better in the real world.

First up. The story of CBS sports, which was covering the event, had supposedly Mentzer pegged as the winner before the contest results were announced. After the contest, they pulled their crew and never aired the coverage and never covered the O again. Well that’s all a lie.

The reality is there was never any statements by CBS about a fix or anything at all. No footage was broadcast because the filming crew had run out of tape. That’s all it was. They never filmed the whole thing. The story about CBS pulling because of a "fix"was conjured up by Coe and Mentzer since they were bitter losers and wanted to discredited Arnold. The story is still being kept alive by fans of Mentzer’s training philosphy who want to rewrite history, because what else do they have to hang on to? Nothing.

Secondly. Mentzer was never a contender. Mentzer still would have been in 4th place even if Arnold never entered. This whole Arnold vs Mentzer thing was created years later he was never a real threat onstage. He was a footnote and nothing more. Revisionist history. He became a contender years after the fact when he had a resurgence of popularity from his HIT training system. Back in 1980 he was just a footnote now somehow he was better than Arnold. People can’t seperate their need to embellish his brief competitive record because they like HIT. So they make it seem like Arnold and Mentzer were rivals, when Arnold barely knew Mentzer existed most of the time. Arnolds only rivals were Sergio and Ferrigno. Mentzer just wasn’t worth noting as competition and no one would remember him if he hadn’t become an author of HIT books later in life.

Mentzer couldn’t even beat Zane or Dickerson and they were pretty small. HIT devotees want to deify their idol though so they won’t stop claiming he was the rightful winner despite the evidence. Ludicrous. Mike Mentzer places lower than he felt and spends the rest of his ‘career’ whining about it.
And another thing about Mentzer- his HIT is BS. Did he train like that? Nope. First he says train 4 days a week, then his HIT gets more minimal over the years so he can get some attention. Finally, how often did he advocate training a bodypart- once every 12 days or something? Just a pile of BS to generate money. Nothing more.

As for Arnold not being at his best is he didn’t need to be. He didn’t have to be at his best. Do you know why Arnold risked his legacy to compete one more time? Because it was a WEAK line-up. All the major contenders were gone like Sergio, Ferrigno and Nubret and all Arnold had to do was beat a bunch of B-Listers who were half his size. None of them could be a dominate Mr Olympia they were just keeping the seat warm until a guy like Haney showed up.

Zane beat Mentzer at the 79 Olympia but both guys were pretty small, and in 1980 Mentzer finished a distant 5th while Zane got 3rd. There were a lot of guys in the contest but they were all B-list or C-list in some cases so stacked doesn’t mean much at all just a lot of filler. Now if an A-list guy like Sergio had of competed Arnold may not of entered. Only Samir had the potential and drive but he finished 15th in 1980. So yeah full but weak line-up at this contest.

The big guys had moved on, and the second tier guys were left or do you really think a small guy like Dickerson could have beat Sergio? Nope. Between the Arnold and Haney years was the rise of the smaller, skinnier Olympians who put more emphasis on conditioning rather than mass.

Anyway Zane was way off, Dickerson was too small and Samir was a long way from achieving his potential so none them posed a significant threat to Arnold which is why he entered and won.

And finally, people tend to believe what other people tell them about the 1980 contest, that is until they get to see the actual evidence for themselves and realise it was really was much ado about nothing. For some people it can be quite a surprise to realise that the judging wasn’t some great scandalous betrayal of everything that was good and holy like Mentzer constantly claimed in his articles up until death finally let him get over it. It’s funny how people always say how Arnold’s prestige affected the results, when all this “controversy” is due to Mentzer’s constant crying about the result! It was MENTZER who has created a hype around himself! He didn’t like Arnold’s training style, so he didn’t like Arnold. Mike just could not stop acting like a little child, very bad sport.
