Huh, I didn’t know that. Cool.

Heard of all these, never really listened to any of them. I will check them out.

Man, I forgot about them! Actually a big fan of them.

See, this is how I’d always imagined it. Anything I’ve heard sounds like this, and it personally just is not enjoyable to listen to. Some of it sounds like stuff you’d listen to while shooting heroin, haha. Just dark. But I’ll give those other bands a shot.

I completely get this. I used to think the exact same thing. And honestly, going down the metal discovery path, I started with bands like Zeppelin, Rainbow, Sabbath, etc.

I knew I always liked a couple Iron Maiden songs but now they’re one of my favorite bands and I have all their (studio) albums and couple live albums. I saw that band I mentioned above, Ghost, opening up for Iron Maiden and they have a great old school metal vibe to them - clean vocals, great melodies, great harmonies, somewhat cheesy lyrics but interesting symbolism, etc.

There are bands like Metallica who are just as popular as most pop bands that don’t have super aggressive lyrics or harsh vocals. Like I said earlier, metal has such a diverse soundscape, whenever I hear anyone say something like “I don’t like metal” I’ll tell them you just haven’t found the metal you like yet, but you like metal…

The thought that all metal is that cunt crusher stuff puts a lot of people off of it which is too bad, there’s a lot of great, new music coming out under the metal umbrella…

I remember when they couldn’t get played on the radio.

pre-Black album days eh? I remember middle/high school (load/reload days) hearing them on the radio every hour … Hero of the Day was always on man haha

I graduated in 1990. Went to a headbanger school. All long hair an leather jackets.

Always figured EDM/trance would be more a heroin vibe.

Honestly, if you like Led Zep then it would be bonkers if you didn’t at least like some elements of early metal bands* as @polo77j said. He’s given you a really solid list to check out there.

The heaviness/accessibility of metal music is comparable to spicy food. Some people love that ridiculous, burn-your-face off hot sauce slathered over everything whereas some people find jalapenos too spicy. I’m probably on the habanero side of things, but I started out with Iron Maiden and the like.

*You would probably also like a lot of more modern metal bands with more melodic vocals, too, but see how you go.

I love the spice analogy. This is an acquired taste. Took me many years to go from this

to this

Nah techno/trance/EDM is all about uppers.

Yeah, I got into more rock/alt stuff when I was 13 or so and remember being legit scared to listen to the Rock in Rio album a friend had got me, because the album art looked like it would be way too heavy for me.

Fucking transcendental afternoon, the day I finally put it on.

Ahahahah! Yeah I as a kid I would listen to metal in secrecy because I would fear what my mom would think lol

about the same for me … and I remember my dad taking me to a record store when I was about 6 or 7 ('88-'89 time frame) and Seventh Son was popular … I remember being a little scared at the album art with torso Eddie holding his intestines …

I’m not even remotely a metal fan (grime/hip hop/techno/house/trance) but I don’t think you can beat the likes of Pantera or Metallica when you’re attempting a squat PB.

I genuinely think this is the greatest live album ever made. You’re the second person this week to tell me it turned them to metal.

S&M would be a very strong contender, but yeah I’d say Rock in Rio takes the crown.

I’ve been binging Destroyer 666 again. I got into them in 2003 and missed their show in Brooklyn around that time.

I’ve recently discovered Inquisition. Do you listen to them? They have some damn good riffs!

Yeah they are cool! But for some reason I don’t really like the singing.

If you want to try some Black metal here are IMHO the best releases of these last years

Will check. Thank you!

Pantera is an everyday listen, gym or not, while cooking, sleeping, whatever.

At the gym, I’ve Been listening to Knocked Loose, Gideon, Kublai Khan, Jesus Piece, Variable, Incendiary, King 810, Guerrilla Warfare, Bodysnatcher, Madball and other hardcore bands for the most part lately.

Obviously things like Hatebreed, Motörhead, Testament, Clutch, Gwar, etc still stay in rotation.

EDIT: Almost forgot I AM as well. Their last record, Hard 2 Kill has been played a lot lately.
