You Must Be An Alcoholic!

For any of you who don’t drink, I’m sure you’ve had similar experiences.

I was at a party last night, drinking a bottle of water, talking to a few girls, just having a good time etc. It’s pretty much inevitable in any sort of social situation where everyone is drinking and you’re not, that someone is going to ask you why. I haven’t drank for 2 years and don’t give a shit if others are drinking and have gotten used to the questions etc. So maybe 30mins after I’m there, this girl comes up and says “whoa, why aren’t you drinking?” I give the standard “I don’t drink” answer and she asks why and I say “I just don’t like drinking” I generally don’t say “for health reasons” cause it just leads to useless debates with drunks.

So her boyfriend comes over and says “well I drink and I’m healthy…you must be an alcoholic right? Why else would you not drink?” I just say “no I just don’t drink” and go on about my business. He is amazed at this and is convinced that I’m an alcoholic.

There’s no real point to this rant, I just love how people can’t comprehend that some of us CHOOSE not to drink. I don’t push my beliefs on anyone one, I don’t think I’m better than anyone cause I don’t drink, and would like the courtesy returned. IF you want to drink, wether it be 1 drink or 20, go for it, I used to like drinking too, I just grew out of it, maybe someday I’ll drink again, who knows. I’m 24 and I find that people older then me generally have less of an issue, but it still cracks me up.

I love when they go on a rant saying “one drink won;t hurt” or “I can;t believe you won’t have a drink with me!” or “just go running!”. They all seem to think that having a good time, means being drunk off your ass. It’s almost as funny as trying to explain to people that you enjoy eating healthy or you eat 6 meals a day…that’s another rant in itself!

Onward and Upward,

Brazen T

I know what you mean. I get strange glances when I tell someone I don’t drink, despite the fact that it’s illegal. Pretty weird to get criticized for not breaking the law. That’s not why I don’t drink; I don’t drink, like you, for health reasons. But still.

Yeah, you don’t get comments like that about anything other than alcohol. Like mayonnaise. Oh, you don’t use mayonnaise? Where you addicted to mayonnaise? Is it okay if I use mayonnaise?

One thing though, it’s harder to get a girl buzzed if you’re not drinking. I’ll just have a glass of water. Would you like a vodka… or eight?

If I’m not drinking usually I say I’m driving even if I’m not. It’s just easier.

That’s actually the reason most studies touting health benefits of alcohol are a load of crap. Statistically speaking, a non-drinker is more likely to be an alcoholic or have severe health issues.

In any case, you have my deepest sympathies.

I think the guy was confused, my definition of an alcoholic is some one that drinks.

It’s kind of sad, but mostly everything we do when it comes to socializing involves alcohol in some way or another.

I drink, but it’s usually during a meal or when I go to watch the hockey game with some friends. There’s a big difference between drinking to get drunk and drinking to enjoy perhaps a nice bottle of wine or the latest from a local microbrewery. Hell, I think grabbing a pint of guinness after a day of classes is something to behold.

I really enjoy watching drunks, it’s great adult entertainment. I used to be a bouncer and I didn’t drink, having a job in a night club and drinking isn’t the wisest thing to do. I used to see these really nice people come in and watch their personalities change as the night progressed. They never think they’re drunk. Nothing funnier than have a really drunk woman try to hit on you, still makes me laugh. But I to usually claim to be the DD seems to make them happy.

Brazen T can correct me if I’m wrong but I think his impression was that Brazen T has had a drinking problem at some point and therefor does not drink now, as a result. Usually, when a person has substance abuse issues, even if they stop using, the urge to use often remains.

What the fuck, you an alcoholic or something?

Jesus, Brazen T. You just don’t get it.

Drunk = Fun

This law is ALWAYS in effect.
If you’re not drinking, it’s neurologically impossible to be having fun at all.

NOTHING is fun without the addition of Drugs and/or alcohol.

The outdoors are the place you go to

  1. Vomit
  2. Move from your car to indoors and vise versa

I cannot understand how the world could be any different. If I contemplated anything that contradicted what I have typed here, my mind would explode and shoot out my ears.

I’m in the EXACT same boat as you man. From the ages of 18-26 I partied and drank just like all my friends. Three years ago I flat out quit because I wanted to take full advantage of college and all the opportunities out there.

I’ve still been to bars and social situations where I’m there to talk to chicks and to see some old friends. It amazes the hell out of me how astonished some idiotic mental retards get by the fact I don’t drink. I feel just like you when trying to explain it- I don’t mention that it’s for physique and fitness reasons because it’s not worth my time to have a discussion with utter retards about how and why I live the way I do. But man is it an exciting topic for conversation from the drunken retards’ point of view.

So you’re not alone, trust me.

???

I don’t drink, nor have I ever had an issue with drinking.

Relax ya slush! I was just joking with the OP.

MsM is right, I should have made it clearer…Buddy thought the only logical reason I wasn’t drinking is that I must have been a recovering alcoholic (which I’m not). There was no other answer he was willing to accept.

And I agree…it is a very exciting topic from a drunks point of view and watching people act like idiots is great entertainment.

I might just have to have a beer to relax after all this explainin…hahaha…

MsM, do people drink where you live?

I don’t drink anymore, mainly because I’m a student, so its fairly expensive when weighing it up against the benefits of tuna, and because, well, it takes a hell of a lot to get me pissed, so theres no point. Mary Jane on the other hand is a wise choice for a good night out.

I must be a junkie. And a sex addict.

I’m exactly the same way. I love a good beer with dinner out or whatever, and I don’t mind going out to have a drink with some friends once and a while. I love beer, and I like to try a lot of it (not all at once). Rarely, however, will I drink with the purpose of getting smashed.

I just can’t wrap my head around how its fun to get hammered-drunk every weekend. Not only that, but where the fuck do people (more specifically, college people) get money to get drunk in a bar?! It’s crazy expensive. I’m a college kid, and apparently I don’t have the right sort of job/rich parents.

Brazen. I can relate completely.

My Peers tend to gauge their level of enjoyment by their blood alcohol content. Where I might have a beer in the night, or a glass of whiskey. By and large, I really don’t drink at all.

What I dislike is that a lot of people think I’m trying to be superior or elitist by not drinking, or somehow a killjoy. When the fact of the matter is. I do not require alcohol to enjoy myself in any given situation. If anything, I’m more reckless when I’m sober than when I’m drunk.

Besides, who needs alcohol when you have drunk people to pick on.

Drinking, more often than not, gets me down, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Some of the reactions I’ve gotten from my stance(which is a very humble “I don’t drink”) have been absurd too. Ranging from “are you an alcoholic?” to “you some sort of fag?” to a blank stare. Not only do people CARE, but they can’t leave well enough alone. They can’t respect that you don’t drink, and feel insecure about it enough to try and belittle your decision. absurd.

Plus the goddamn expense is ridiculous. What gets me is when friends of mine spend upwards of $100 a WEEK on alcohol, and then complain that they are broke. Even when they are working all the time. For fuck’s sake, lighten up on the drinking and you’d actually have a savings account.

I’d just say im driving tonight.
