Yogi's Random Training Thoughts

Had a ton of hip pain in my warm ups, so I figured 10x10 would be a bad idea. I did squat 500 though. Probably the easiest 500 has ever felt for me. I’ll try the 10x10 another time. Figured something in the 275 range will be appropriate.

Actually after I hit some strength goals I have, around the end of 2017 to early 2018,I’ll probably take a break from all the heavy work for 2-3 months and focus on a high volume routine like 10x10 just for a change

what’re your numbers at these days, Flip? And isn’t there a comp soon? I know we’ve talked about this before but my memory isn’t the greatest

really late to the party but…

Religion keeps most people in line but that isn’t what makes it right or wrong. Simply put right or wrong is treating others the way you want to be treated.

yeah I don’t think anyone could argue with that

Well, based on the way that squat felt, I’d guess I could max at around 550 right now. I missed a 585 deadlift right at the knees a week ago, but I’m probably good for it now. Because drugs. Hoping to be close to 600 by the time I compete in 2 weeks. The event is actually an axle/wagon wheel deadlift (essentially a rack pull with a 2" thick bar). I clean and pressed a 225lbs axle for 8 reps the other day with gas left in the tank. Bench is probably 360-370.

My total for the big 3 is probably less than it was at my best, which was around this time last year, but only by a little bit. And my overhead strength is much better than it was. Overall, my static strength has maybe suffered a small bit, but my athleticism and competency in strongman events is worlds better than it was a year ago.

I think that’s the best way to answer your question.

so is powerlifting gone for good or do you think you’ll go back to it?

That axle press is scary.

powerlifting is just so boring. I could see myself doing a meet from time to time, particularly if I have a stretch of time when I don’t have any local strongman shows available to do. I wouldn’t even consider really prepping for a PL meet. I would just sign up and do one kind of on a whim maybe. Most of my training is still centered around those lifts, so it’s not difficult to show up and do a meet. But I’ve basically done what I wanted to do in that world. I hit elite numbers. Maybe if I find myself at internationally elite numbers, I’ll get them in the books, but until then, hitting a slightly higher total than what I’ve already done just isn’t that appealing.

haha, yeah, powerlifting is so fucking boring. It’d give you an excuse to get fat though! We both know you secretly harbour those desires.

How’s everything else going? Mrs Flip alright? Tell her I say “yo” when you speak to her next. What about that business thing you were planning doing? Any movement on that?

(I’m being deliberately vague with my wording because I don’t know how much you want to discuss on here)

hahahahahaha i love the vagueness.

I can’t get fat if i try. And i mean that very literally, it would be hard to eat more junk than I already do.

she’s good! saw her 2 weekends ago and seeing her this weekend. We’re actually checking out a space for the bar Sunday afternoon with my potential business partner, so that’s sort of gaining traction.

I really didn’t want to get invested in the bar thing until I sold my house, since that’s such a huge expense for me right now, but I have a contract on the house now, and I’m closing mid March. So assuming that all goes through the way it should, I can actually start making headway on this bar thing and figure out if I can make it happen now.

haha, 7.6k views this ridiculous thread has had! Who knows what spies are lurking? I didn’t want to use her name or give details of the business venture just in case but I guess it’s overly cautious on my part given you regularly give out your real name and facebook…

I think you’re approaching the t-ransformation thread with the wrong attitude: just get fucking fat! I believe a hard-working, purposeful man like you could totally do it. Going from jacked to terrible would be a pretty significant transformation. I should know; I spent the last year doing pretty much exactly that!

Cool, well tell her Bob’s sending good vibes her way. She’s cool, your missus. I probably told you that at the time but honestly my memory of that particular evening is pretty hazy. I’m sure you guys’ll have a very long and happy life together and I really, truly mean that. Exciting stuff about the bar too! Is it going to be in that same location you’d originally planned or did that fall through?

House thing sounds like a major ball-ache but at least it’s reaching a conclusion. So new home, new lady, new potential business, all sounds like it’s making for an interesting new chapter in Flip world! Best of luck with it all.

thank ya sir! yea location is potentially the one we talked about before. still up in the air though, there are options. found a cool spot with a rooftop patio as well.

she’s likely about to get a new job where she’ll be making more money than I do! So that’ll be nice, hahaha. She can support my bar-ownership pipe dreams single handedly. maybe she can even build me a gym
I’ll see her in a few hours, I’ll tell her you say ‘yo’

Why not have a bar that’s also a gym?

^that looks awesome.

Yogi, you mind a minor hi-jack? Of course you don’t.

So I checked out a 5800 square-ft, 2 story building with a 1100 square ft roof deck, and an additional back patio. The place is already finished out as a bar on both floors, kitchen hook ups but no installed appliances, and like a dj booth set up on the second floor. It’s off the main street in Galveston, but only about a 5 minute walk from there, and directly between the main street and a very popular cocktail bar. It would get foot traffic going by it regularly.

So it’s a kick ass spot, for just over 300k to purchase the building outright. But it’s huge. I’m trying to come up with ideas on how to use the upstairs space. Considering a few things, including a complete remodel to to turn it into a couple upstairs apartments to lease out.

Wondering if anyone wants to throw out ideas  the downstairs would be a cocktail/beer bar with old school arcade games, ski ball, that kind of shit.

Have you thought of using the top floor as like a nightclub sort of thing? Just need to hire a DJ really and that’s all your space used up if you can get people in.

yea, i mean that’s what it’s built for right now. I think a more creative idea would go over better. The previous tenant of the building had planned to do that. basically a restaurant downstairs and club thing upstairs. But he bailed for a reason, lol.

I generally don’t like that idea because it’s a market that is relatively saturated in the area. And the location isn’t great for that. I’m still entertaining that as a possibility, but I’d prefer to go another direction. That’s just not the sort of thing I want to do anyway. I came up with the arcade idea because I’ve seen very popular arcade/bar themes across the country in every major city I’ve been to, and Galveston has ZERO of these right now. I’d love to be the first to give it a shot.

There are two (to my knowledge) such arcade bars in the Columbus, Ohio area and they are both doing amazingly. My sister is friends with the general manager of one, and the other usually has a line out the door or a wait to get in. They both allow you to play the games for free (if you’re drinking). You should definitely give that theme a shot…especially since there isn’t another one in the city!

I don’t necessarily think expanding the club upstairs would be all that great. My two thoughts would be 1) apartments would be a great way to have monthly cash flow if you think it’s an area where tenants would bite OR 2) depending upon the space available, might not be a bad are to do your own distilling/brewing to sell downstairs, and you could also charge for tours if you ever wanted to go that direction with the business someday.

arcade bars are doing well here in the UK. Retro games in general are super trendy right now
