There are no legitimate/named(proven) sources which claim one console to be in reality x % faster than the other.
Regarding performance they are almost identical when it comes to hardware (minor differences), the advantage of either is in the hands of the game developer.
While I agree with you that the quality of a game is indeed up to the developer, there are numerous accounts of developers stating hardware differences between the two and how that effects performance, which is something that can’t be casually dismissed. One of the major hardware differences is in regards to memory, i.e. the 8 GB of unified GDDR5 in the PS4 vs. the 8 GB DDR3 + 32 MB ESRAM in the Xbox One.

While most of this is indeed theoretical, and again I agree with you, you can’t deny a lot of the reports of vast resolution differences in launch titles between the two consoles. But to play devil’s advocate, the most powerful console doesn’t always win the race.
I think we’ll get a better picture of what kind of power the consoles are outputting when:
A) More third party developers start releasing games for the console. If there continue to be resolution differences, then I think that will speak for itself.
B) First party games start rolling out from studio like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, etc.
But I’ll be getting a Xbox One in the near future (probably whenever Titanfall comes out).
As some sources have pointed out, it is rather worrying that XBone is unable to compete with resolution right out the gate as what will happen 5-8 years down the line when the graphical requirements of games will be really pushed.
